If you want to learn about Whiskey, read this book! Great information and really an enjoyable read. I've read it twice
If you’re looking for something educational, it is really hard to beat this book,
Tasting Whiskey: An Insider's Guide to the Unique Pleasures of the World's Finest Spirits https://www.amazon.com/dp/1612123015/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_G8HC3JPRXWS5PEJZ5H6T
It is the best piece of whiskey literature I’ve read.
Hey! Thank you for your answer and your recommendation. This is a book that I found, https://www.amazon.com/Tasting-Whiskey-Insiders-Pleasures-Spirits/dp/1612123015 - would that be any good?
I'm falling asleep - will reply with a more thorough reply tomorrow.
This book is only $12 on amazon and it's a great read and a good place to start in the world of whiskey. As far as what to try, it seems really the only way is to try it. If you're worried about buying a whole bottle you can always try some at a local bar. If you do buy a whole bottle and don't like it, you can always use it for mixed drinks. There are some brands I didn't like straight but were great with ginger ale or club soda
Check out the book Tasting Whiskey. It's a nice, no nonsense, take on getting the most out of whiskey as well as a lot of interesting history and discussion about what makes each type unique.

I recommend Tasting Whiskey by Lew Bryson as an introduction to whiskey.

Other than that, it's not about reading books but you have to drink whiskey. You decide what to buy next based on recommendations here or from your liquor store.
i liked this book a lot...
I tried springbank because they were from Campbelltown and there didn't seem to be very many others. They are also one of the few distelleries to do every step onsite.
They malt thier own barely unlike some other distillers who buy the malted barley from elsewhere. I've tried the springbank 15 and the 12. Not cheap but definitely worth the price in my opinion. If you really want to open yourself up to new things, get this book:

Goes into how different whiskeys are made from different parts of the world and how things like still shape effect the taste. Really great info.
This is also a good reference for learning about other whiskeys:

When I first started to get into whiskey I bought this book:

Really great overview of whiskey in general and how it's made. For example I now understand how things like still shape contribute to the taste.
Buy this book right now. Trust me.
