The TC-750LC that I’m looking at has a dial on the front to adjust the level from 1-10 - I assume this is the gain knob but I don’t know what those increments translate to.TC-750LC Amazon
Art DJ Pre II should be just as good for $35 less than the PA10 and it adds adjustable gain. Or the U-turn Pluto 2 should be better than the PA10 for the same price. Or the Technolink-TC-750LC $49 should be sufficient for the Edifiers.
The Edifiers you already have are fine to start with for the RT82. A later upgrade up to the level of the RT82 would be an analog stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp and a better and larger pair of passive speakers.
Is your tracking force set correctly?
10% to 20% lower volume can by typical, 50% lower is extreme.
If you are going to get an external phono stage preamp get one with an adjustable gain dial to match the level of your other audio sources. Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49, also available at Amazon, or Music Hall Mini Plus $149.
Buying in USA or UK or where?
Phono stage outside of the turntable is preferred if you have the option. A phono stage preamp is usually smaller than the Sonos Port and can be tucked away out of sight.
Pass on the 1+ because it lacks a switch to ever bypass the built in phono stage premap.
The Planar 1 is beginner plug and play easy setup if that is what you want. Also it only has auto bias instead of adjustable bias and only includes a basic $25 cartridge.
The new improved Pro-ject Debut Carbon <strong>EVO</strong> $499 includes the $150 Sumiko Rainier cartridge.
Music Hall are made in the same factory as Pro-ject and a good value when on sale:
Fluance RT82 $299 has adjustable anti-skate, includes a cue lever and shipping, and includes an Ortofon OM10 cartridge which is a bit better than the newer version 2M Red. Then it adds auto stop plus an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Pass on the RT84 and RT85 since for those prices you can get a better Music Hall or Pro-ject Debut Carbon EVO.
Phono stage preamps:
Guides: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers and Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Stands, Accessories and Vinyl Care. Check out r/BudgetAudiophile for speakers and speaker amplification.
Fluance RT82 > phono stage preamp > Yamaha HTR-6240BL will work just as well as the STR-DH190.
Phono stage preamps:
Don't do a possible downgrade to a turntable with a basic $20 value built in phono stage preamp.
Better phono stage preamp than the Pyle: Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49, also available at Amazon, has adjustable gain
Better phono stage preamp than the Little Bear: U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version.
For a $500 budget the new improved Pro-ject Debut Carbon EVO. It includes the $150 Sumiko Rainer cartridge.
Rega Planar 1 $475 is high quailty easy setup beginner plug and play.
What is your amp and speaker setup? No phono stage preamp in the amp?
If the $500 budget needs to include an internal or external phono stage preamp:
No built in phono stage preamp:
Music Hall are made in the same factory as Pro-ject and are a good value on sale:
Fluance RT82 $299. It has auto stop then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for low wow and flutter and speed variation. Includes the Ortofon OM10 cartridge that is a bit better than the newer version 2M Red. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Pass on the RT84 and RT85 since for those prices you can get a better Pro-ject or Music Hall.
Phono stage preamp:
With a built in phono stage preamp:
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 has adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
If you like the Klipsch sound consider upgrading to an analog integrated amp or stereo receiver with a better built in phono stage preamp instead of the digital amp inside the Klipsch R51PM and a step up in model line to the Klipsch Reference <strong>Premiere</strong> RP-150M ~~$419~~ $219.
Power them with a Sony STR-DH190 $149 with Bluetooth and a built in phono stage preamp with adjustable gain so you can set the phono level to the same level as other audio sources.
Or Cambridge Audio AXA35, Cambridge Audio AXR85, Yamaha A-S301, Emotiva TA-100, Yamaha A-S501 all have a good around $100 value built in phono stage preamp.
Yes, you could do better for the price of the Marley turntable and much better for $100 more.
The speakers are good to start with and are the better part of the setup.
The powered speaker with the amp inside may make a bit of white noise. Do you hear it with other audio sources besides the turntable?
If you plan on getting a better turntable then you could try a better phono stage preamp first.
Phono stage preamp to use with the Klipsch powered speakers:
Or switch to an analog amp and passive speakers and a good number of stereo receivers or integrated amps or have a better built in phono stage preamp than the one in the Klipsch speakers.
Turntable upgrade: Fluance RT82 $299 has auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Belt drive for noise isolation and solid MDF plinth instead of hollow plastic on the LP120X. Includes the Ortofon OM10 cartridge that is a bit better than the newer version 2M Red. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
Optional upgrade to analog amp to use with better passive speakers:
Speakers:
Or if there is also a TV in the room an AV Receiver $239+ with HDMI inputs and switching and you can later add more than 2 speakers for movie and TV surround sound.
5x Speakers for use with an AV Receiver: Jamo Studio Series S 803 HCS-BLK ~~$419~~ $229.
Guides: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers and Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Stands, Accessories and Vinyl Care.
Check out r/BudgetAudiophile for speakers and speaker amplification.
The Monoprice amp does not have a phono input. Also I don't think it's a tube amp, it seems to be a solid state amp with tube buffers.
What is a Phono Preamp? • How to Connect a Turntable to a Receiver
Phono stage preamp good for the RT82:
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 has adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, seems to have better gain than the too much gain in the Art DJ Pre.
Pass on the Orbit since it lacks user adjustable anti-skate and the cue lever and shipping adds $60 to make it not so worth while compared to other options. The acrylic platter is mostly for looks so spend the money on a better turntable. Also phono stage preamp outside of the turntable is preferred when you have the option.
The Fluance RT82 $299 has adjustable anti-skate, includes a cue lever and shipping, has an aluminum platter instead of the base model MDF on the Orbit, and includes an Ortofon OM10 cartridge which is a bit better than the previous version 2M Red.
Music Hall are made in the same factory as Pro-ject and a good value when on sale:
If not using a receiver or amp with a phono input get a Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, or the U-Turn Audio Pluto 2 $99 new improved version.
Do you already have speakers?
No, don't run it through your computer.
2 input switch to switch between your turntable and computer: Schiit Sys.
Phono stage preamp:
Guides: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers and Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Accessories and Vinyl Care. Check out r/BudgetAudiophile for speakers and speaker amplification.
$350 is not high end.
What is a nearby town or zip to search for used options?
Best value new within your budget IMO is the Fluance RT82 ~~$299~~ $290 with $10 off coupon code "TENSAVEV40Q". It has auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for low wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
If not using it with a receiver or amp with a phono input, add a phono stage preamp Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 has adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
Are you also planning on buying a stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp and some passive speakers to use it with?
New stereo receivers or integrated amps with built in phono stage preamps:
Or an AV Receiver $349+ if there is also a TV in the room.
Speakers on sale:
Towers: No need to build or buy speaker stands.
DIY Speakers: 5" C-Note $100. Add around $35 for supplies then budget for tools if you don't have any. Glue, clamp, solder, paint, assemble. Compare to built speakers costing over twice as much.
Audio Guides and Accessories and also check out r/BudgetAudiophile and their PSA.
2x SKF-100s + 2x SKM-100 + 1x SKC-100 are a 5 speaker plus subwoofer home theater speaker package for an AV receiver used with a TV for movie and TV surround sound. The may be rebranded JBL or Polk entry level speakers. They seem to have been sold at CircutCity for $200 to $300 so they have a $100 used value.
You only need the 2 larger speakers for turntable stereo music. Speaker placement for stereo music listening.
A speaker upgrade will give you better frequency response, more details and better mid range and then mid bass above the subwoofer cut off.
For a phono stage preamp a Technolink $49 or Art DJ Pre III $65 will last through a speaker upgrade or get the better U-turn Pluto 2 $99.
What is a Craigslist or nearby zip code to search for used speaker upgrade deals?
Technolink $49 and Art DJ Pre II $65 both have adjustable gain.
At the top of your budget is the U-turn Pluto 2 $99 shipped that is just as good as the Schiit Mani that costs $30 + $12 shipping more.
Then it's the basic entry level Pioneer speakers that are your sound quailty bottleneck so the phono stage preamp upgrade may give you limited benefits until you upgrade the speakers.
What is your stylus and cartridge?
Technolink or Art DJ Pre III should be plenty good for the $100 Eris 3.5. Maybe a bit more for a Pluto 2 if you plan on a $200+ speaker upgrade. Don't expect vinyl to sound like Spotify, it's just different, or not necessarily any better unless maybe you are spending thousands on a setup.
Eris E4.5 are good. Technolink or Rolls VP29 are both good for them. Or the Art DJ Pre II too. Or at the top of your budget the U-turn Pluto 2 $99 is just as good as the Schiit Mani that costs $30 + $12 shipping more.
If it has one an entry level stereo receiver or an AV receiver may have a $25 value built in phono stage preamp.
Better than entry level may have an around $75 value built in phono stage preamp.
Speaker upgrades if still on sale and available when you do upgrade:
Or floor standing towers and you don't need to buy or build speaker stands:
Or 5 speakers for an AV Recevier:
Plus OFC Speaker Wire or lower cost CCA then How to Install Speaker Wire and How To Strip Speaker Wire.
Setup Guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers
Technolink-TC-750LC $49.
Art DJ Pre II $66.
Art Precision $79.
U-turn Pluto 2 $99 shipped may be just as good as the Schiit Mani that costs $30 + $12 shipping more.
You could try a phono stage preamp with adjustable gain.
Also have you considered a stereo upgrade? The plastic Sony shelf system is likely a sound quality bottleneck for the C200.
The Kenwood or Sony are probably not any better than the Yamaha you already have. A $19 Behringer PP400 phono preamp may even be better than the built in phono stage preamp in the Sony.
The good vintage receivers with good built in phono stage preamp to get are the often silver face receivers with analog tuners from the 70s.
More phono stage preamp options if you have or will get better than entry level speakers.

Fluance RT82 plus a $19 Behringer PP400 phono preamp that is around the same quailty as the one in the Drop VTA is a lower total cost than the Drop VTA.
Or the RT82 plus a $48 Technolink should be better than the one in the Drop VTA and is around the same total cost as the Drop VTA.
Or next steps up are:
For the HD650s get a good headphone amp.
Turntable without built in phono stage preamp > external stand alone phono stage preamp > headphone amp > HD650.
$100 headphone amps good to start with are JDS Labs Atom amp with a 2 input switch, Monoprice Monlith Liquid Spark and Schiit Magni.
Phono stage preamps:
Or a combo phono preamp and basic headphone amp:
Behringer PP400 $19.
Technolink-TC-750LC $49.
Art DJ Pre II $66.
Art Precision $79.
U-turn Pluto 2 $99 shipped may be just as good as the Mani that costs $30 + $12 shipping more.
Nice Jamo desktop setup!
You could get a phono stage preamp with adjustable gain that you can turn up so you don't need to turn the volume up for the turntable then back down for other sources.
Most subs auto on/off can be tricky. If you use it everyday you may as well just leave it on, not auto. The digital amps in subwoofers don't use much power at all when not in use, not much or any more than a power brick uses. There are inexpensive testers you can see how much power anything plunged in is drawing if you are concerned about it.
Turntable: Fluance RT82 $299 has auto stop and then the new optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for low wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
Then separate components within your budget that you can later upgrade one part at a time.
Or over budget option:
Or within budget for a small room or desktop/computer setup smaller 4" powered speakers and a phono stage preamp:
Setup guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers
Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Speaker Stands and Placement, Accessories and Vinyl Care
Match the quailty of the phono stage preamp to the quailty of the rest of your setup.
Also Taking the Guesswork out of Phonostage Gain.
Behringer PP400 $19 for a basic entry level speakers and stylus.
With adjustable gain:
Or get the good U-turn Pluto 2 $99 for your Orbit.
No. The older RT81 lacks the new optical sensor speed controlled servo motor that the newer RT82 has for lower wow and flutter and speed variation and the speed won't drift like it can on the RT81.
Behringer PP400 $19 may be the same or a bit better quailty than the one in the RT81.
Technolink-TC-750LC $49.
Art DJ Pre II $65.
Art Precision Pro $79.
U-turn Pluto 2 $99 shipped should be just as good as the Schiit Mani that costs $30 + $14 shipping more.
If your phono stage preamp is a dud:
Pass on the Pro-ject Phono Box E.

The RT81 has a built in phono stage preamp and the packages include powered speakers with a built in speaker amp.
The much better RT82 does not have a built in phono stage preamp so you would ideally connect it to a stereo receiver with a built in phono stage preamp (The Sony I listed) and then a pair of passive speakers. Or RT82 to a $19 or better phono stage preamp to powered speakers.
Phono stage preamp for the RT82 if not getting a receiver or amp with a phono input:
Another great deal on speakers are 5.25" Infinity Reference 253 ~~$499~~ $129 each, by 2 for a pair.

Ah a small room.
Amplification:
The Yamaha R-S202 does not have a built in phono stage preamp. You would connect an external phono stage preamp to it.
The Sony STR-DH190 has a built in phono stage preamp so you wouldn't need an external phono stage preamp to start. You can upgrade to a better external one later and connect it to a line level input like on the Yamaha.
Or for a small room and you don't want to stack the receiver under the turntable with a riser shelf, turntable stand then sure start with a digital mini amp and you can upgrade to a better analog integrated amp or stereo receiver later.
Or what is a location to search for used options?
Speakers:
I still highly recommend the 5.25" Klipsch RP-150M ~~$479~~ $229 if you have the room and budget for them. Reference Premiere area a step up from Reference.
Or if you must have 4" speakers, Jamo Concert 9 Series C 91 II ~~$459~~ $199. (Though the 6" Jamo Concert 9 Series C 93 II are only $50 more).
A2+ are small 2.75" computer speakers for a small desk, not so good for room listening.
If you must have a small pair of powered speakers for a small room then 4" Jamo S 801 PM ~~$299~~ $149 are larger and a better value.
If you are getting the Fluance RT82 then add a phono stage preamp between the turntable and Jamo powered speakers.
Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor that the RT82 and up have. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
Setup guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers
Audio Guides, Speaker Stands and Placement, Accessories and Vinyl Care
You get what you pay for.
There should be speed pots often through the bottom of the unit to adjust the speed with a tiny screwdriver if it's not playing at the correct speed.
A better turntable such as the Fluance RT82 $299 adds an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for low wow and flutter and speed variation and the speed will always play at the correct speed and won't drift since the sensor is monitoring the speed 400 times a second. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
Then if you want a single retro speaker:
https://www.crutchfield.com/shopsearch/Klipsch_The_One_II.html
https://www.marshallheadphones.com/us/en/woburn-ii-bluetooth.html
https://www.marshallheadphones.com/us/en/stanmore-ii-bluetooth.html
Plus a phono stage preamp between the turntable and speaker.
Or put the turntable on a https://www.andoveraudio.com/products/spinbase-turntable-speaker-system that has a built in phono stage preamp.
Built in phono stage preamps in entry level turntables are often $5 in parts and comparable to a $20 external phono stage preamp.
Phono stage preamp outside of the turntable is preferred if you have the option and most better than entry level turntables don't have one built in. You can start with a $20 external one that is around the same quailty as one built into entry level turntables then upgrade later if you end up getting better than entry level speakers.
Fluance RT82 > Behringer PP400 $19 (which is sufficient for a soundbar) > RCA input soundbar.
Or a step up:
Then a later upgrade from the soundbar for both TV and turntable will be an AV receiver. Start with a pair of passive speakers and optionally later add a center speaker, side surround speakers and a subwoofer for TV surround sound. Or start with a 5 speaker setup from the beginning.
AV receiver with 4K HDMI, starting at $229 without, or $329 with a phono input.
Speakers:
Or floor standing towers and you don't need to buy or build speaker stands:
Or optionally for the AV receiver 5 speaker tower and stand mount packages.
Plus OFC Speaker Wire or lower cost CCA then How to Install Speaker Wire and How To Strip Speaker Wire.
Setup guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers
Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Speaker Stands and Placement, Accessories and Vinyl Care
You're welcome. If you are only using the receiver as a phono stage preamp and will not be changing to passive speakers you can replace the full size receiver with a small phono stage preamp.
A stereo or AV receiver or compact or integrated amp will power passive speakers.
If you already have a pair of powered speakers then yes, turntable without a built in phono stage preamp > a phono stage preamp > powered speakers.
More options:
Better phono stage preamps for the RT82 or C10:
Or even a Behringer PP400 $19 may be suffience if the powered speakers are very basic entry level.
Setup guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers
Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Speaker Stands and Placement, Accessories and Vinyl Care
Most built in phono stage preamps are around $15 in value.
Better phono stage preamps for the RT82 or C10:
Setup guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers
Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Speaker Stands and Placement, Accessories and Vinyl Care
Get the Fluance RT82 that has auto stop and has lower wow and flutter and speed variation than the AT-LPW40WN.
However leaving the stylus running in the run out groove for minutes to an hour won't hurt anything. Even 10 hours may only reduce stylus life by 1 to 2%.
Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that are not worth buying since they lack the new speed sensor controlled motor.
For a phono stage preamp for the RT82 if not getting a receiver or amp with a phono input:
The Tivoli speaker(s) are fine to get started with then later upgrade to a pair of larger home audio passive speakers and a stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp.
Sangean?
What do you power the headphones with?
Leaving the stylus running in the run out groove for minutes to an hour won't hurt anything. Even 10 hours may only reduce stylus life by less than 2% however yeah you probably don't want to do that every night falling asleep.
For manual turntables without auto stop there is the Q-UP, check the turntable compatibility list. You just need to push down the pop up lever every time you want to use it.
A full size stereo receiver with a built in phono stage preamp can be placed under the turntable with a riser shelf, turntable or audio stand. Or even spacers if the turntable legs are short.
External phono stage preamps are small and can be tucked away out of sight. The one I listed is only 5.5 x 3 x 1.5 inches.
For a manual turntable with auto stop I recommend the Fluance RT82. Pass on the cheaper models that lack the new speed sensor.
Then if you want the 4" Jamo 801PM powered speakers connect a small Technolink TC-750LC, or Rolls VP29 made in the USA, phono stage preamp between the turntable and the powered speakers. Or other options are Art DJ Pre II $65 or U-turn Pluto 2 $99.
Or if you like Jamo consider getting the larger passive 5.25" Jamo S 803 ~~$229~~ $109 speakers.
The Edifier speakers already have a built in speaker amp. You wouldn't add another speaker amp, that could blow the amp in the Edifiers.
Do the Edifiers sound much better with other audio sources? You do have the switch on the back of the turntable set to LINE correct?
If you have the switch set to LINE and the volume from the turntable is lower than you like compared to other audio sources you could set the turntable to PHONO and add a phono stage preamp with an adjustable gain dial between the turntable and powered speakers.
However you are probably hearing the limits of inexpensive starter speakers and you would be better off putting the budget towards a speaker and amplification upgrade.
If the turntable does not have a built in phono stage preamp then you can connect a separate stand alone external phono stage preamp to the Def Tech amp that should be great to start with or use for many years with the Klipsch speakers.
More vintage turntables in addition to the good ones randy listed:
Then connect a phono stage preamp between the vintage turntable and the Def Tech amp.
Or U-turn Orbit turntables with the good $79 built in Pluto phono stage preamp that is better than most built in phono stage preamps such as ones in AT turntables:
Then connect the Orbit with the built in phono stage preamp directly to the Def Tech amp.
Or if buying a modern turntable a step up from the Orbit is the Fluance RT82 $299 that adds auto stop and then the new optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Then get one of the phono stage preamps above to use it with the Def Tech amp.
Setup guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers
Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Speaker Stands and Placement, Accessories and Vinyl Care
Pass on the Orbit that lacks user adjustable anti-skate and the cue lever is an extra $40.
The RT82 is a good value, includes adjustable anti-skate and a cue lever, has lower wow and flutter and speed variation.
Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
The LPW40WN has the same speed sensor controlled servo motor as the RT82 however the RT82 has lower wow and flutter due to the external belt and the RT82 seems to have better quailty control or at least easier to get a replacement direct from Fluance if there is an issue out of the box.
Phono stage preamps:
Setup guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers
Audio Guides, Speaker Stands and Placement, Accessories and Vinyl Care
Phono stage preamps:
If you get a receiver or amp with a built in phono stage preamp via the phono input then you don't need an external phono stage preamp.
Turntable with a built in phono stage preamp > headphone amp > headphones.
Turntable without a built in phono stage preamp > external phono stage preamp > headphone amp > headphones.
Or there are a few phono stage preamp and headphone amp combinations however most lack a non turntable input.

Pass on the older RT80 and RT81 that lack the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.

If you must get small powered speakers for a small room, 4" Jamo S 801 PM ~~$299~~ $149 on sale with Bluetooth. Plus a phono stage preamp, Technolink-TC-750LC $49 or Art DJ Pre II $65 or U-turn Pluto 2 $99.
For a low budget, Technolink-TC-750LC $49 or Art DJ Pre II $65.
Yep, get the Planar 3 then upgrade the speakers when you can. A later upgrade for the Planar 3 is the NEO PSU that is included with the Planar 6.
Or get the new improved Pro-ject Debut Carbon EVO for half the price that may be the best turntable under $800.
If you will be using the M50 speakers you can start with an under $100 phono stage preamp and then upgrade later when you upgrade the speakers.
Phono stage preamps under $200:
The AT-LPW40WN with the built in phono stage preamp can connect directly to the S 801 PM.
The Fluance RT82 adds convenient but not necessary auto stop and moves the belt to the outside of the platter for a bit lower wow and flutter or a bit better speed stability, and can later take an acrylic platter but it's mostly for looks.
For the RT82 instead of the basic Pyle a better Technolink-TC-750LC $49 or Art DJ Pre II $65 or U-Turn Pluto 2 $99.
EVO if you plan on upgrading from the Presonos studio monitors and the receiver or integrated amp you upgrade to may already have a phono input to a built in phono stage preamp.
RT82 is more than sufficient for the Presonos monitors. Phono stage preamps that are sufficient or more for the Preonos monitors: Technolink-TC-750LC $49 or Art DJ Pre II $65 both have adjustable gain or U-Turn Pluto 2 $99.
Technolink-TC-750LC or Art DJ Pre II or the $329 or higher Denons are worth it for the improved features and the basic built in phono stage preamp.
If the Orbit does not have a built in phono stage preamp then connect the external Pluto 2 phono stage preamp between the turntable and the powered speakers.
Or for lower cost and sufficient for the basic Miccas a Technolink-TC-750LC or Art DJ Pre II.
Or if you just purchased the Miccas return them and get a stereo receiver with a built in phono stage preamp plus some passive speakers.
Setup guide: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers
What is everything in your setup to match the quailty to, turntable, cart, amp, speakers?
J33 looks like a pro studio component. Do you have a recording studio?
For a $65 budget: Technolink-TC-750LC or Art DJ Pre II.
$99: U-Turn Pluto 2.
$189: Hagerman Bugle3 for a good manufacturer direct value.
Ideally choose a cartridge first then match the phono stage preamp to the cartridge, then install both at the same time. Taking the Guesswork out of Phono stage Gain.
Or start with a phono stage preamp with an adjustable gain dial, Technolink-TC-750LC or Art DJ Pre II or Music Hall Mini Plus . Or the Hagermann Bugle3 has 4 gain settings and is a great manufacturer direct value. Or there are some more options with preset gain settings over $200.
Better to order the RT82 direct from Fluance if you can.
Direct form Fluance.com or Amazon.com returns are free and should be easy.
You could start with a $20 Pyle that may be similar to the one in the RT81.
Better options:
What is the rest of you setup?
Your speaker amplification volume is maxed out?
If you want the turntable output to be higher up to the level of other audio sources you can get a phono stage preamp with adjustable gain.

The RT80 can not be upgraded to an RT82.
The older RT80 and RT81 lack the new optical speed sensor servo controlled motor that the newer improved RT82 and up have for much lower wow and flutter and speed variation and never need or can even have a manual speed adjustment since the sensor is monitoring the speed 400 times a second.

What is the rest of your setup, amp and speakers?

Have you upgraded any drivers or recapped the crossover capacitors in the vintage Kenwood speakers?
Internal phono stage preamps in entry level turntables can vary and are often $5 in parts so comparable to a $25 external. The one in the AT-LPNW40 is decent to start with and may be a bit better than other cheaper turntables.
Some good external options to start with are Technolink TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain or Rolls VP29 $49 made in the USA.
U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version should be just as good as the Mani, costs $30 less, has free shipping instead of the $12 Schiit, and no restocking fees on returns.
For a good phono stage preamp you want to make sure you already have good speakers that often cost 3x as much as the phono stage preamp. Or buy used for half the cost of new.
For the RT82 pass on the PA10.
Technolink TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, Rolls VP29 $49 made in the USA are plenty good for your speakers.
Or U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version is better than the PA10 if you plan on a later speaker upgrade.
What is the budget? What is the room size? What is a nearby town or zip code to search for used options for you?
A phono stage preamp is also required with the amp if it does not have a phono input: Technolink TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, Rolls VP29 $49 made in the USA, or U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version are some options.
Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Stands, Accessories and Vinyl Care.
The RT82 has lower wow and flutter and auto stop over the LPW40WN. The LPW40WN may have a bit better tonearm and the cartridge has more affordable stylus upgrade options.
The LPW40WN has a decent basic built in phono stage preamp.
For the RT82 start with the Realist receiver. If using an amp without a phono in put then Technolink TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, Rolls VP29 $49 made in the USA or the U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version
If your amp or receiver does not have a phono input then yes. Technolink TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, Rolls VP29 $49 made in the USA or the U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version
Don't buy an Elemental. If you want a Project get the new Debut Carbon EVO if you can.
Better than the LP120X is the Fluance RT82 $299 that adds auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for low wow and flutter and speed variation. Solid MDF plinth instead of hollow plastic on the LP120X. Belt drive for motor noise isolation. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Pass on the RT84 and RT85 since for that price you can get the better Pro-ject Debut Carbon EVO.
Plus a phono stage preamp: Technolink TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, Rolls VP29 $49 made in the USA or the U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version may be just as good as the Mani, costs less and has no added shipping costs.
Or the Audio-Technica AT-LPW40WN $299 has the same speed sensor motor as the RT82, adds a basic built in phono stage preamp, but does not have auto stop.
Or look for a good vintage turntable.
Which model passive speakers?
A full size analog stereo receiver such as a Sony STR-DH190 $149 can be stacked under the turntable with a riser shelf, a turntable stand or spacers and it has a built in phono stage preamp, has a Bluetooth receiver, and has extra inputs for other audio sources. Or get an AV receiver if there is also a TV in the room and AV have 4K HDMI switching and the option to add more speakers for movie and TV surround sound.
A compact amp such as the BasX A-100 and Dayton Audio APA150 have a single input. Add a Schiit Sys to add another input. For the phono stage preamp connect a Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 phono stage preamp with adjustable gain or U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version.
Mini amps are digitally controlled so pass on those if you want an all analog setup for analog vinyl. Nobsound G3 2 Channel Bluetooth Amp $55.
Or consider looking for a used stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp with a built in phono stage preamp.
If you have the option get the phono stage preamp outside of the turntable for isolation and a variety of options.
The Orbit lacks adjustable anti-skate, lacks a speed switch and the cue lever and shipping adds $60 to the cost making it not worth it.
Turntable that have all those features and included standard:
Or consider looking for a good vintage turntable from a seller who fixes them up and has them ready to demo for you before buying it.

Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain knob, possibly better alternative to the ART DJ Pre II for $15 less.
Rolls Red VP29 $49 made in the USA, same thing as the overpriced $150 Music Hall Mini.
U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version with free shipping, US company.
A Bluetooth speaker you already have?
Better turntable, Fluance RT82 $299 adds auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for low wow and flutter and speed variation. Solid MDF plinth instead of hollow plastic on the LP120X. Belt drive for motor noise isolation. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Plus Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 phono stage preamp and Bluetooth Transmitter $30.
While the Aura may sound good if you are going to upgrade the turntable you may want to also consider an upgrade to a stereo or home audio / home theater system sooner than later to get the most out of the turntable upgrade.
For the LP60X you could try a stylus upgrade from the stock conical tip to elliptical tip 4211-DE $21 stylus.
For a turntable upgrade for $20 more than the LP120X, a solid MDF plinth instead of hollow plastic on the LP120X and belt drive for motor noise isolation.

Check out r/BudgetAudiophile for speakers and speaker amplification.
If the turntable or stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp have a built in phono stage preamp then start with that one. There is no reason to start with a Schiitt Mani at this stage and level, put those funds towards a better turntable, speaker amplification or speakers if you have the budget.
If both the turntable and speaker amplification have a built in phono stage preamp then use the one that sounds better to you.
If neither the turntable or stereo or AV receiver or integrated amp have a built in phono stage preamp then you can start with a Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 and upgrade later. Or the U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version should be just as good as the Schiit Mani, costs $30 less, and has free shipping. The Mani adds $11 for shipping and has an odd gain setting.
The phono stage preamps in the AT models or the Sony receiver are decent to good, should be better than a $14 Pyle Phono and may have a $30 to $50 value possibly comparable to or almost as good or close enough to a $50 Technolink TCC TC-750LC or Rolls Red VP29. It's hard to say without doing a direct A/B comparison of them all.
For the RT82 add an external phono stage preamp Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 or U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version.
Phono stage preamp: U-turn Pluto 2 $99 new improved version or Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49.
However consider returning the tiny 3" YU2 that are basically computer speakers, unless you live in very tiny room, and get better larger speakers and a stereo receiver with a built in phono stage preamp.
Analog stereo receiver Sony STR-DH190 $149 with a built in phono stage preamp with adjustable gain and Bluetooth:
Larger better passive speakers:
Or if you must have powered speakers a bit larger than the YU2 are 4" Jamo S 801 PM ~~$299~~ $149 for a smallish size room and cost less. Plus the U-turn Pluto 2.

If the phono stage preamp is dead add a Technolink TCC TC-750LC $55 and it adds adjustable gain.

Or a used Rolls VP29 $20 (inner sunset / UCSF). Made in the USA. New are $50. It's the same thing as the Music Hall Mini Phono that Music Hall charges twice as much for.
The older RT81 is not worth buying since the newer improved Fluance RT82 for $50 more adds a $100+ increase in component and performance value since it adds the new optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for much lower wow and flutter and speed variation and the speed won't drift since the sensor is monitoring the speed 400 times a second. It also has the Ortofon OM10 cartridge that has a better cantilever than the newer version 2M Red. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
For headphones get a headphone amp instead of a stereo receiver that steps down the speaker amp to headphone level which is not ideal.

Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, is more than sufficient for the entry level digital amp Edifiers.

RCA to 3.5mm cable to connect to the Bose.
The Orbit lacks user adjustable anti-skate and the cue lever and shipping adds $60 to make it not so worth while compared to other options. Phono stage preamp outside of the turntable is preferred for isolation from the turntable so if you want the U-turn Pluto 2 I recommend the external one.
The Fluance RT82 $299 has adjustable anti-skate, includes a cue lever and shipping, has an aluminum platter instead of the base model MDF on the Orbit, and includes an Ortofon OM10 cartridge which is a bit better than the previous version 2M Red.
Then add a Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, or the U-Turn Audio Pluto 2 $99 new improved version. Or if low on budget you can start with an $18 Pyle PP444 that should be as good as one built into entry level turntables and then upgrade to a better one later.
Guides: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers and Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Accessories and Vinyl Care. Check out r/BudgetAudiophile for speakers and speaker amplification.
Turntable to phono stage preamp should be under 5 feet for the low level phono signal.
If you want your powered speakers to be farther away from the turntable then you need to add an external phono stage preamp next to the turntable and then you can run the higher line level signal over 5 feet.
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
U-Turn Audio Pluto 2 $99 new improved version.
Which model Onkyo?
Doesn't the Pro-Ject RPM1 include the $99 Sumiko Pearl? That cartridge is sufficient for your current setup until you upgrade the phono stage, receiver, and speakers.
There isn't much point in spending $275 plus on a phono stage preamp until you upgrade your speakers which will be the sound quality bottle neck for the RPM1 and Pearl. Also a receiver or amp upgrade may already have a good $100+ value built in phono stage preamp.
You could start with:
Options when you do upgrade your speakers:
Phono stage preamp next to the turntable on the same shelf with a 2 or 3 foot RCA cable. Then you can use a longer cable to go over to the receiver into a standard line level input:
Get the speaker that's up there away from the wall, halfway between the wall and the chimney if you must keep it up there and the front edge on the front of the shelf then toe in a bit.
Ideally on bookshelf (misnomer) speaker stands in front of the shelves: Dayton Audio SSMB24 or Monoprice Glass. Sturdy Monolith by Monoprice Speaker Stands or Monoprice Cherry. DIY Custom Speaker Stands.
Speaker Placement: How to position your speakers for great sound and Stereo Music Listening or Home Theater.
Good to see you don't have a TV up there to avoid r/TVTooHigh.

If you get a vintage receiver look for a serviced and recapped one and most will have a built in phono stage preamp via the phono input.
Stereo receiver: Sony STR-DH190 $149 with Bluetooth and a built in phono stage preamp with adjustable gain.
Speakers:
Or floor standing towers then you don't need to buy or build speaker stands: Klipsch Reference R-610F ~~$499~~ $259 pair.
Add speaker wire then 4 ways to strip wire.

Put on a new stylus or cartridge.

You are missing a phono stage preamp for the RT82.

If you are already looking for a phono stage preamp and cartridge upgrade and are overhauling your setup and you recently purchased the RT81 then you have 30 days to exchange it for the RT82 for $50 more that has a $100+ value increase in components, features, and performance. Fluance will cover the shipping both ways. The RT82 adds the new optical sensor speed controlled motor for much lower wow and flutter and speed variation and the speed won't drift. Then it upgrades to the OM10 cartridge which is a bit better than the newer version 2M Red on the the RT83.
Then add an external phono stage preamp if not using a receiver or amp with a phono input.
Add a phono stage preamp if you don't have an external or built in one:

There isn't much point in a $1000 turntable with a $65 phono stage and a digital Sonos system unless you plan to upgrade to a $500+ analog stereo receiver or integrated amp and $750+ speakers.
The Sonos system is converting your analog vinyl signal to digital for wireless transmission.
For your current setup your best bet is to refurbish the Technics SL1200. Maybe it will be under $300, I don't know. If not, then a $300 to $500 turntable would be more than sufficient for your setup if you don't plan on upgrading it.
What is your current phono stage preamp?
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, is better than the ART DJ PRE since the ART may have distortion even on the lowest setting.
If you get a $1000 turntable, $500 amp, $750+ speakers then spend at least $250 on the phono stage preamp such as the Vincent PHO 8 ~~$449~~ $249.
If the Orbit does not have a Pluto phono stage preamp built in (there would be a switch to turn it on and off) then add an external one between the turntable and powered speakers.
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
U-turn Orbit Pluto 2 $99 new improved version.
Guides: Turntable, Phono Preamp, Amp or Receiver, Speakers and Audio Guides, Speaker Wire, Accessories and Vinyl Care. Check out r/BudgetAudiophile for speakers and speaker amplification.
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49, also available at Amazon, is supposedly better. The Art DJ Pre gain may be too high even on the lowest setting and may introduce distortion. Neither may be a worthwhile upgrade from the one built into the Sony receiver.
U-turn Orbit Pluto 2 $99 new improved version may be worthwhile for the Elac Debut 2.0.
Or Music Hall Mini Plus $149 has an adjustable gain dial.
If you ever plan on upgrading your speakers:

10 to 20% lower volume for vinyl is typical.
Taking the Guesswork out of Phonostage Gain

Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49, also available at Amazon.
Music Hall Mini Plus $149.
Get the EVO for $500 and spend the $150 on the phono stage preamp and maybe some records. The acrylic platter is mostly for looks at this level and you can always add it later if you really need to look at it.
If you must go lower budget to start with, the Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, is supposedly a better option than the ART DJ PRE that may have distortion even with the gain turned down all the way.
$300 is good to start with, $500 is worthwhile.
The new Debut Carbon EVO $499 includes the $150 Sumiko Rainier cartridge in the US.
Music Hall are made in the same factory as Pro-ject and a good value when on sale:
Under $300 is the Fluance RT82 299 when back in stock. It has auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for low wow and flutter and speed variation. Includes an OM10 cartridge that is a bit better than the newer version 2M Red. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better. Pass on the RT84 and RT84 since you can get a better Pro-ject or Music Hall for those prices.
If your AV receiver does not have a phono input:
Tube phono stage preamps: Hagerman Cornet3, Pro-Ject Tube Box DS or Pro-Ject Tube Box S2.

No. It doesn't even have user adjustable anti-skate and the cue lever is an extra $40.
A better turntable with auto stop, with adjustable anti-skate, includes a cue lever and includes shipping is the Fluance RT82 $299 when back in stock at the end of the month. It then adds an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Has an aluminum platter instead of the MDF platter on the basic Orbit. For a phono stage preamp the Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, is better than the ART DJ PRE II that can have some distortion issues even with the gain on the lowest setting.
The Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49, also available at Amazon, does not have the distortion issues that the ART DJ may have and it also has adjustable gain.
What is your speaker amplification and speakers?
Rega is good quality however it is hampered by the lack of easy to adjust anti-skate and only includes a basic cartridge.
Better than the Essential II is the new Fluance RT82 $299 when back in stock at the end of the month. It adds auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for low wow and flutter and speed variation. Includes an OM10 cartridge that is a bit better than the newer version 2M Red. What model was your 80's turntable? Did it die?
The new X version LP120X? NAD are good, which model, you are using the built in phono stage preamp?
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 adds useful adjustable gain over the Rolls, also available at Amazon.
What are your speakers? If they are basic entry level then upgrade the speakers first for the most improvement in sound quality
If you have good speakers, AT-VMN95EN $99 instead of replacing the cartridge and doing an alignment.
The 2M Red is over hyped and over priced. If you must have Ortofon then the previous version Super OM 10 is a bit better and costs $20 less.
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 adds adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, however it seems there is an issue with your turntable, stylus or receiver.
You have tried the turntable with different inputs on the receiver?
If devices connected to Bluetooth or AUX have their own volume control you may have the gain too high so you can bring the volume down on those to match the turntable level.
Or is the FM radio or a component DVD or CD player also very loud compared to the turntable?
Sure once you upgrade the turntable then try a better phono stage preamp.

$50 Art DJ + $70 receiver budget is $120. The Sony STR-DH190 with build in phono stage premap is only $10 more.
A used receiver may already have a built in phono stage preamp via the PHONO input so you would'nt need the ART DJ PRE.
If the receiver does not have a built in phono state premap, Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49, also available at Amazon, is better than the ART DJ PRE. Or start with Pyle PP444 $18 and upgrade later.
Not much for sale used around there. Pioneer VSX-710S $95 (Missoula) Offer $70. It's pre HDMI. Can use digital optical input if using with a TV. Then you need to add a phono stage preamp so you may as well get the Sony STR-DH190 $129 that has one built in.
You're welcome. Any time.
It may be worth trying a better external phono stage and a stylus upgrade. LP Gear CARBON FIDELITY CFN95SE $49.

Guides:
Yes, turntable without built in phono stage preamp > external phono stage preamp > receiver aux/line input.
How to Connect a Turntable to a Receiver
What is a Phono Preamp? Example, Technolink TCC TC-750LC with adjustable again, also available at Amazon,
Use whichever one sounds better to you. They are just different components. The one in the receiver may be even more basic than the one in the turntable.
LP60X switch set to LINE > Aux/Line input on receiver.
LP60X switch set to PHONO > Phono input on receiver.
Or try a Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 that adds adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
For the low level phono signal ideally under 3ft from turntable to phono stage preamp then 10, 15, 20, 25 ft to the receiver aux or line inputs.
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 adds adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
You could first try 10 ft from turntable to receiver phono input and see if you notice any difference. Use speaker wire for the long ground cable.
Get a second of the same speaker for stereo music. Any particular reason you only have one studio monitor? Did you have it connected to any recording or mixing equipment or instruments or interface? If you only use one speaker you would need to sum the stereo signal to mono and there may be pro audio solutions for that.
Then you are missing a phono stage preamp. What is a Phono Preamp? Add a Technolink TCC TC-750LC, also available at Amazon, or an ART DJPREII Phono, and they both have adjustable gain. Or a DJ mixer with phono inputs that will also give you unified volume control for a pair of studio monitors instead of adjusting the volume of each one on the back of the speaker. Or connect the phono stage preamp to a Nobsound Little Bear MC2 if you have XLR sources besides the RCA connection turntable and it will give you unified volume control and switching between XLR and RCA inputs. Or a Schiit Sys if your other audio source is also RCA like the turntable.
This $19 Pyle Phono Preamp Is Anything But Crap
They Pyle may be dead.
You need to isolate where the problem is first by troubleshooting and testing out all the options available to you.
Connect the turntable directly to the speakers. The volume will be low and the EQ will be off. If it sounds the same as with the Pyle then the Pyle is dead.
Test the speakers with another audio sources to rule out that it is the speakers.
If you need a new phono stage, the Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, may be sufficient for the Swan speakers.
You balanced the tonearm and set the tracking force correctly?
You are missing a phono stage premap.
Which model speakers? Have you put on a new stylus or cartridge, which model?
Start with a Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 that has adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49, also available at Amazon, seems to have better gain adjustment.
Turntable > 3ft RCA for low level phono signal > phono stage preamp > 30ft RCA for line level signal > aux / line input on receiver.
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 adds adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
RCA:
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 adds adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
Audio-Technica AT-VM95EN $119.
Warm Nagaoka MP-110 $135 is often preferred over the 2M Blue and costs much less.
Is it new with a new stylus? The replacement parts are free? Phono stage preamp outside of the turntable is preferred for isolation of the electronics from the turntable motor. The acrylic platter upgrade is mostly for looks however you basically got the acrylic and cue lever as free upgrades. $180 for the Orbit Plus with cue lever without the built in Pluto Phono stage is still a good price. You could ask for a $40 refund, half the price of the built in Pluto phono stage preamp then buy an external Pluto from U-turn if you are not using a receiver or integrated amp with a built in phono stage preamp or the Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 costs less and adds adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
DOA can happen. Some seem to upgrade the power supply to a better one anyway. Return as defective or contact ART for a replacement. If returning you could get the Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49, also available at Amazon, that vwestlife says is a better option. There is also a Technolink USB option for $20 more.
The Fluance RT82, $275 with coupon code "FLUCAT, is significantly better than the Marantz TT42P. The old Marantz TT42P can have speed variation issues such as playing too slow or fast. The newer RT82 has an optical speed sensor servo controlled motor for very low wow and flutter and very good speed accuracy since the speed won't drift with the sensor monitoring the speed 400 times a second.
Does your dad already have speakers and and a receiver or integrated amp with a Phono input? If it does not have a phono input then add a phono stage preamp such as the Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
Technics SL-1950, sure add a phono stage preamp such as a Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, then use which ever turntable plays and sounds better. Since you have powered monitors you can replace the receiver with a Nobsound Mini with one set of XLR and one RCA inputs or a Schiit Sys with 2 RCA inputs for source switching and volume control. Or change to passive and possibly better speakers for room listening. Is there a cartridge and stylus on the SL-1950, which model?
It's a solid state preamp with tube buffers mostly for show. It's not necessarily any better than any other solid state preamp for around the same price.
The Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 has an adjustable gain dial, also available at Amazon, and may be just as good or a bit better for $15 less.
Try buying both and return the loser if you can even tell a difference.
You're missing a phono stage preamp. Sony STR-DG600 does not have a phono input. Add a phono stage preamp such as the Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon. If you must go lower budget, Pyle PP444 $19 is around the quality of one built into entry level turntables or receivers.
Have you put on a new stylus yet? No model number on the back of the speakers? After adding a phono stage preamp and possibly a new stylus or cartridge the Magnavox speakers are probably the sound quality bottleneck so consider upgrading to better speakers when you can. What is your other turntable?
What speakers will you use with the new turntable, basic entry level or mid level quality?
The basic conical tip stylus is more forgiving for old worn out records.
The U-turn Orbit lacks user adjustable anti-skate, it's beginner plug and play preset at the factory, and the cue lever and shipping adds $60 which makes it not so worthwhile for a $239 turntable without adjustable anti-skate.
A better turntable and value that has adjustable anti-skate, includes a cue lever, includes shipping, has an aluminum platter instead of the base model MDF on the Orbit, and includes an elliptical tip stylus OM10 cartridge which is the previous version of and a bit better than the 2M Red is the Fluance RT82 ~~$299~~ $275 with coupon "FLUTCAT". It also adds auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
If not using a receiver with a built in phono stage preamp Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 has adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49, also available at Amazon, may be just as good and it adds adjustable gain.
Which model powered Sony speakers and Onkyo receiver? Why do you have the speakers connected to a receiver instead of directly to the turntable?
You can upgrade in stages. Upgrade the speakers first for the most increase in sound quality and bang for the buck. Start with some good passive speakers to use with the Onkyo receiver.
Yes, the Klipsch speakers I listed are passive and they will work just fine with the Onkyo receiver for now.
Or buy used speakers for the best value. What is a nearby town or zip I can search for used options?
Then you can upgrade the stylus to CFN95SE stylus for AT-LP120 $49.
The ProJect Debut Carbon Evo is an upgrade from the LP120 however it may not be a significant enough upgrade so consider saving up for a step up to an X1 or similar or a good vintage turntable for $300 to $500 that compare to new turntables costing twice as much.
Or keep the LP120 longer and do the surgery and soldering to rip out the built in phono stage preamp and the switch that does not completely turn it off. AT-LP120 Preamp Removal Guide | Vinyl Restart
Then add a phono stage preamp with adjustable gain dials:
Or Hagerman Bugle3 $189 has 40/50/60/64dB gain settings.
Then upgrade the receiver last or at the same time and use the built in phono stage preamp instead of an external one for now.
Then maybe a powered subwoofer.
There isn't much point of a tube phono stage preamp that is worth buying at $400 such as a Pro-ject or Hagerman Cornet 3 unless you plan on buying a $750+ turntable with a $250+ cartridge and $750+ speakers or the equivalent used.
You don't need a switch if you only have one audio souce.
Uturn Orbit > phono stage preamp > headphone amp > AudioEngine A5+.
The Mani has an odd gain settings. Consider getting a phono stage preamp with an adjustable gain dial. Technolink TCC TC-750LC or at Amazon. Or Music Hall Mini Plus.
For the headphone amp, the JDS Labs Atom Amp has a handy 2 input switch and 2 gain settings.
That's a solid state phono stage preamp with a tube buffer. It's not really going to be any better than a standard solid state phono stage preamp without a tube buffer.
Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 has adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
Its says right there on the thirdmanstore.com product page that it's a Pro-Ject Phono Box MM. It's an old model that's not worth more than $50.
The phono stage preamp in the LP120X is fine to use with the Pyle PDa6BU and Klipsich B-100 speakers. The Pyle may not even be a Class A/B amp and may be Class D or digital.
No need to spend $100 or more on a separate phono stage unless you plan on upgrading the receiver/amp and speakers.
If you really want to to try an external one the Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 adds adjustable gain, also available at Amazon, and will be sufficient for your setup.
The Sony STR-DH190 $149 may be better than the Pyle and has a built in phono stage preamp with adjustable gain.

Pass on the older RT81 that along with the RT80 lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
Next step up are Music Hall that are made in the same factory as Pro-ject and are often a better value when on sale.
Or the new Pro-ject Debut Carbon <strong>EVO</strong> is $499 and is a worth while upgrade over the Debut Carbon for $100 more.

Congrats Dad!
Since you already have a turntable consider going with a bit better turntable than the Orbit. Like the LP60X the Orbit also lacks user adjustable anti-skate since it's also beginner plug and play. I wish U-turn would drop the price of the base model to $199 shipped with cue lever included and then offer a new upgraded model with adjustable anti-skate and dial counterweight and cue lever starting at $249.
Until then, a better turntable and value IMO that has adjustable anti-skate, includes a cue lever, includes shipping, has an aluminum platter instead of the base model MDF on the Orbit, and includes an upgrade to elliptical tip stylus OM10 cartridge which is the previous version of and a bit better than the 2M Red is the Canadian Fluance RT82 ~~$299~~ $275 (~~$405~~ $380 CAD) with coupon code "FLUCAT". It also adds auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.
If not getting a receiver with a built in phono stage preamp you could start with a Technolink TCC TC-750LC $49 with adjustable gain, also available at Amazon.
No. The Orbit is no worth buying, especially in Canada.
The U-turn Orbit lacks user adjustable anti-skate, it's beginner plug and play preset at the factory, and the cue lever and shipping adds $60 USD which makes it not so worthwhile for a $239 USD turntable without adjustable anti-skate.
A better turntable and value that has adjustable anti-skate, includes a cue lever, includes shipping, has an aluminum platter instead of the base model MDF on the Orbit, and includes an upgrade to elliptical tip stylus OM10 cartridge which is the previous version of and a bit better than the 2M Red is the Candadian <strong>Fluance RT82</strong> ~~$405~~ $380 CAD with $25 off coupon code "FLUCAT". It adds auto stop and then an optical sensor speed controlled servo motor for lower wow and flutter and speed variation. Pass on the older RT81 that lacks the new speed sensor. Pass on the RT83 since the cartridge is not any better.

Amp and phono stage:
You need a stereo or AV receiver or integrated or compact amp to power the passive speakers and many have a built in phono stage preamp so you don't need to start with the Mani. The Mani sounds good but it has an odd gain setting that is not very useful.
If you do add an external phono stage preamp then consider getting one with an adjustable gain dial.
Consider keeping the AV receiver for the TV with 2 or 3 good front speakers as an upgrade over the soundbar and getting a 2 channel receiver or amp for the office.

The built in phono stage preamp is fine to start with.

You have powered speakers.
You need, a turntable, phono stage preamp, headphono amp.
Turntable > phono stage preamp > headphone amp > powered speakers.
I recommend the JDS Labs Atom over the Magni since the JDS includes a built in 2 input switch and 2 gain settings for IEMs or headphones.
