It amazes me how many parallels I see between these actions and these teachings which in my views may have been valid once when global communication was muted; but now that connections are bridged through the Internet completely fall apart. And yet I STILL constantly see business/markets cling desperately to these dusty philosophies...
Ok promoting a show is a skill. Don't expect to be good at right away. There's no magic bullet. It takes a lot of practice and time to get good at marketing.
First, word of mouth is king. And people only share podcasts they LOVE. People never recommend podcasts they think are just ok or so-so. So if I were you, I'd spend 100% of my focus on making a show that people cannot get enough of. If you have 10 listeners, the game isn't to get 10 more, the game is to figure out how to make those 10 listeners into super fans. Make them love your show so much that they are sitting their whole family down to listen to your show. And that they can't stop buzzing about it in the office. And that they recommend it to everyone every chance they can. If you can do that to 10 people, congrats, you just hired 10 marketers to market your show for free. Don't just make a show, make something kick ass and amazing. That's probably why you started so what does it take to get there.
Now if you can get past that first step (which might take you 6 months or a year), marketing your show will be a lot easier. If you're a total newb like you said, start with having a shareable website and a be on a few social media outlets, at least 2. I'm on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. Any place that you can get people to follow and like and comment on the stuff you're doing. Now your goal here is two fold. You want to build an audience and you want to post things that people like. You can read a thousand articles on how to build a big social media following. So find one you like. Basically promoting your show to 10,000 followers will make it a lot more effective than promoting it to 100. And even nobody's can have 10,000 in just a couple years. It takes time but you need to start on it. Now as your doing that post good stuff. Play with a million varieties of postings. Like I said this takes time. Post pull quotes from your show, post images of someone listening to your show, post reasons why people should be listening to your show, post each episode a few weeks after you originally posted it but with a different promotion message. Do it at different times of day. Over time you'll learn what things are working and what aren't. The tweets that work the most effective, do the same tweet again a few months later. Those are your winners so play them again sometimes. Oh and make sure your website is nice. When people share it on social media does an image show up? Is it the right image? Is it the right message? Try using things like the Twitter card validator to see how it looks when you post your URL. Make that thing jump. Remember, your listeners are also sharing your show to their friends, so you want it to pop for them too.
That should get you goin. For some good books I recommend the 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing, and anything by Seth Godin. And pop on over to /r/entrepreneur from time to time to pick up on other marketing techniques and to share your own strategies.
This small book would be a great resource.

This was suggested to me by a woman who started a successful coffee shop in NYC.
I like the following:
I had a friend recently suggest "The 22 Immutable Laws of Marketing". It's a short and simple read but has some great content.
Neat another good thing ruined by Facebook. First they give me president Biff now they fuck my favorite medium up continuously. I won’t give them my money. Don’t care if revive can let me play it.
Guess if you can’t make the quality product, change the game... wish people had listened to Dr Deming instead of trash 90’s business books. Peoples acceptance of this shit is going to crash an industry.
