Yes, that is sadly common, but we need to remember that these Protestant events are underpinned by school holiday programmes for both primary school and high school aged children, as well as very developed children's ministries, (puppets, drama, TV) and summer camps that are both local and regional/diocesan. They have a very successful pipeline of ministry, (grabbing them young and keeping them engaged as they grow) and ministry budgets, and cultures that honour such ministries and honour long term commitment to them. Many youth ministers get seminary training before they are appointed.
When I look at the Catholic events available for young adults, there isn't anything local. Or if there are, eg Praisefest and Adoration, they can be conducive to getting closer to God but aren't conducive to building relationships. Or there are talks, usually with a strong vocational flavour (consecrated life). The diocesan events are at least an hour's travel away and rarely accessible by public transport. The capital city events are good, but you meet people who live too far away to build any meaningful relationships with. We also have rapid turnover of youth leaders, losing them when they begin tertiary study or when they begin employed work outside the local area.
