Saying that progressive Christians are the ones being true to Jesus's word is actually pretty naive. The late Hector Avalos wrote a book called The Bad Jesus that threw cold water on the idea of Jesus as some kind of 1st-century Bernie Sanders. By covering all of Jesus's teachings instead of just the feel-good bits, Avalos came to two conclusions.

• The supposedly progressive teachings had already been enunciated by earlier philosophers and religious writings
• The majority of Jesus's teachings are actually quite abhorrent from a 21st-century perspective.
