I'll just go ahead and put here what I decided on doing with my kids.
Math: We're using Math U See Primer (for kinder) and Beta (for 2nd grader), and supplementing with the Abeka Mathematics 2 and Math for Minecrafters, which my 2nd grader is really excited to use.
ELA: I decided on Winter Promise for our main language arts program, along with the Jot It Down creative writing projects from Brave Writer. I also ordered a Writing for Minecrafters for additional practice.
Social Studies: Using Story of the World volume 1 with both of my kids. I'm finding lots of good project ideas to go along with it on Pinterest. I'm also going to be throwing in some geography skills and activities, and having a country notebook we make together to learn about different cultures from around the world.
Science: I'm using the TEKS as my guide and a lot of living books on various science topics, as well as supplemental videos I've found from places like Mystery Science or Generation Genius or even old Bill Nye videos on YouTube.
I'm also going to spend time learning about health (posture, nutrition, etc.), safety (fire safety, water safety, etc.), and various life skills (cooking, Scouting skills, etc.). Two days a week I'm going to have rotating "clubs" like a Lego club, cooking club, and art club.
I'm also going to incorporate read alouds (we've read through a graphic novel of King Arthur recently, and my husband has been reading Harry Potter to them), music discovery (music from around the world), a poetry tea time (one day a week have some special snacks and read poetry together), nature journals (I'll integrate this with science and art), art appreciation (looking at different pieces of art, virtual museum trips, etc.). I did memorization work in elementary and I also want to incorporate some of that with my kids to help with their working memory. These types of electives will be just a once a week thing to spice things up.
When I finished with our schedule, it looks like we'd be doing about 4 hours a day of active learning. I'm really looking forward to seeing how my kids will grow with such individualized attention and instruction.
