Aletheia, have you had any experience with Robert Alter's translation of the Psalms? This was the primary text for a course I took a year ago. I loved the vividness of the translation, but I'm wary of a commentary from a Jewish author. My question extends to Walter Bruggemann if you have an opinion on his commentaries on the Psalms, too.
It still does not really translate well into English rhythm or anything like that, but it sounds like you're going to like what Robert Alter did with his translation.

His explicit goal was to translate the Hebrew Bible in a way that captures the nuances in Hebrew. It also comes rife with commentary going into more detail.
These scholars claim so and claim this translation is more reflective of the native Hebrew.
