Read The CIA's Greatest Hits and you'll realize Vietnam was just par for the course, ever since American became preoccupied with imperialism (ie. the need to control the world before the Russians did).
It's a really great book: it's both short and full of cartoons, but at the same time because it's so accessible and packed with knowledge, you'll learn more than you would from most full-sized history textbooks. And just in case you think it's some conspiracy craziness, the back of the book is chock full of (valid, historical) citations for everything in it.
I recommend it to everyone who's at all curious about what our CIA has done "in our name": it's only $12, fully illustrated, and you can finish it in a few evenings (or even one ... but it'd be kind of a miserable evening to read the whole thing in one go).
This book is pretty interesting, and informative concerning what the CIA does. I haven't read it in awhile, but I remember a few of the stories were just opinion, and the author labels them as such as well before the chapter beings. This way you know what is his opinion, and what has actually been released to the public.
In short the CIA has global reach, and no morals.
The larger point is true though. The CIA have told some absolute whoppers over the years. I think it's more interesting that this fella is ex-CIA, not current. The CIA's Greatest hits is worth checking out for some of their more interesting activities.
The thing you have to understand about the CIA is something you're not prepared to understand: It's run by bankers for the purposes of international business interests, not "people keeping americans safe." Every field agent is so expendable that they nearly burned all of them in a sloppily guessable database under Panetta.

Most of those agents have no idea what their true purpose was, and none of them knew they were being sent into a death trap. But despite the fact that you could literally google their database (Iran did it) and that they used the same system in China as their Middle East operations (thinking they were untouchable), these are the people telling you that you need to break encryption and let them roll over your entire life so they can shake you down.
Do you know their history in South and Central America? It starts with two lawyers who decided they could "off these little brown people on the cheap." That thread runs straight to today's migrant caravan, where all the failed narco states to the south of our border constitute CIA "wins."

In summary, Fuck the CIA, and fuck every agent involved with it. If any agent is a patriot, they're useful idiots doing evil on the world stage.
