My stitch books include 2 vintage Harmony Guide to Crochet stitches and a few others, yet I like and use the Crochet Stitch Dictionary by Sarah Hazell and The Complete Photo Guide to Crochet by Margaret Hubert more often now. The latest addition to my crochet library has good reviews The Complete Book of Crochet Stitch Designs and is great if you like specific overall stitch patterns.
something like that is done just by doing some chains and skipping over some stitches before going back into the row below. You can adjust the shape by changing the number of chains you create, changing the number of stitches you skip over, or even change the number of stitches you put into the chain when you do the row above.
I got inspired by some nice patterns in here. I don't know if the exact one you're looking for is in here, but seeing how similar things are done may help you figure it out.

This is a great book for stitch patterns!
I put this book on my Holiday wish list.
It's a stitch and not a pattern book, but you can certainly get a lot of practice in.
I've been crocheting for over 15 years. There are tons of free patterns online. I only buy the occasional pattern to support artistic contribution. All my pattern books were gifted to me. This is a site I found a long time ago and continue to use.
(As others pointed out) Your local library will have a lot of pattern books.
One of my favorites:
