Try some philosophical pessimism. David Benatar or The Conspiracy Against the Human Race. There's also an r/pessimism sub with a reading list for more of this kind of stuff.
Thomas Ligotti - The Conspiracy Against the Human Race is probably the one I can recommend the most.
There's also Better Never to Have Been - David Benatar.
If you think one of them is too expensive tell me.
You could also Studies in Pessimism - Arthur Schopenhauer.
At last I can recommend this article from Richard Dawkins going into why nature pretty much sucks.
I think Thomas Ligotti's CONSPIRACY AGAINST THE HUMAN RACE might fit the bill. The sections are fairly short and the audiobook is interesting (and dread-inducing). It's existential horror, if I had to categorize it.
>In Thomas Ligotti's first nonfiction outing, an examination of the meaning (or meaninglessness) of life through an insightful, unsparing argument that proves the greatest horrors are not the products of our imagination but instead are found in reality.
>"There is a signature motif discernible in both works of philosophical pessimism and supernatural horror. It may be stated thus: Behind the scenes of life lurks something pernicious that makes a nightmare of our world."
Possibly worth a look if you find yourself intrigued by Ligotti - I haven't read it myself but I've had it recommended to me more than once - is SONGS OF A DEAD DREAMER AND GRIMSCRIBE. It's described as Lovecraftian, if that's a bonus for you. Downside is it's two short novels as opposed to a collection of short stories.
And I'm not sure if this is exactly gothic or poetic, although I think you could probably make an argument for both, but here's a real trip in audiobook format: HAUNTED by Chuck Palahniuk. Pure insanity. A bunch of short stories woven together by a great through line (a group of strangers trapped in a house together at a writer's retreat, many of them going a bit mad), and each is told from the perspective of a different character. Some of them are pretty intense. It's one of my favourites!
Same reasons we all are. There's a good book that I think everyone should read that does a good job of laying it all out: https://www.amazon.com/dp/0143133144
