If you have it, annotated chronicles for sure. The big pink cover is a bit much, but I loved all the annotations.
I think i have read at least 75% of all the books in the DragonLance realm when i was a teen. It was my first real dive into the fantasy genre (other than the hobbit) at the time.
If you haven't read it yet, I would HIGHLY reccomend the Forgotten realms books circling around Drizzt. I was apprehensive at first as I was all about wizards, but there is a fair dose in there of wizards and Drizzt is just an awesome character. Plus you can buy the collections which contain all 3 books in a trilogy fairly cheap on amazon. I believe this is the first trilogy chronologicly, although some start with the Icewind Dale trilogy
Drizzt from The Dark Elf Trilogy. He is such a fascinating and lovable character, throughout his development, we find such likable, and heroic qualities. Talk about rooting for an underdog.
His Drizzt books are the most famous. But...the writing in the beginning of the series....is not near as good as the later books.
So it depends on how much time you have. I'd say you could start here: http://www.amazon.com/Trilogy-Collectors-Homeland-Exile-Sojourn/dp/0786915889
Its a good balance of being early on in the series, easy to read, and not terrible writing.
The Dark Elf Trilogy by R. A. Salvatore.

It does sound like a pretty amazing story. Mostly excited because it's a subterranean setting lol.
