"The Dark Is Rising" Sequence by Susan Cooper. Fantastic Fantasy Series set in the UK - England And Wales, and tied up with Arthurian Legend.
I hear there is a terrible movie version of the first book. I have not watched it because I don't want to ruin a great series I love.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Susan Cooper The Dark is Rising. Brilliant series. Don't let that it's marketed to kids fool you.
