The Greatest Story Ever Told... So Far: Why Are We Here? by Lawrence Krauss. It's a history of the current formulation of the Standard Model. It goes through some stuff I found too complex to understand, but that doesn't stop the reader from grasping the core subject - history - which I found fascinating. If I ever decide to learn quantum mechanics, I'll do so with some help from his book.
