This story has some interesting background on Montgomery. What's shocking is how much his MO hasn't changed. As other commenters point out, he's even had conveniently timed "strokes" before.

Mary Fanning relied on Montgomery's expertise to write some conspiratorial bullshit. This paragraph from the Hammer expose story will sound eerily familiar:
