I think there are some interesting parallels with the Meiji invasion and occupation and the Hideoyoshi invasions of the late 1500s. I recommend Sam Hawley's book for a fascinating look at that older war. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00NB0HG7G/ref=kinw\_myk\_ro\_title
