I'm in the process of losing weight (10lbs down.) I refuse to do keto personally because i know I don't want to do it for the rest of my life. I use guidelines in this book for "linking and balancing" carbs, protein, and vegetables: https://www.amazon.com/Insulin-Resistance-Diet-Revised-Updated-Fat-Making-Machine/dp/0071499849
For me and my carb- loving self, this has been the most sane way for me to eat. No disrespect to those doing keto or IF, it's just that those protocols are more restrictive than I'd like. I can't look at an apple and see it as unhealthy based on its sugar content... but i can certainly factor that in to my sugar intake during meals. I prefer just to keep an eye on my portions and the nutritional value of what i eat.
I've tried lots of different ways to lose weight, and this has been the most effective and sustainable for me. CICO was helpful in having me see what healthy portions looked like, but it didn't change my weight much. Following the Insulin Resistance diet has been the only way i've been able to lose and keep it off. I just had a "bad" week recently and did not follow the guidelines and i saw the weight creep back up. When i went back to proper carb portions, it started to go back down again.
I do exercise 4× a week, a combination of strength, cardio and light yoga. This has been critically important for my overall health and mindset and being in tune with my body's needs. This in itself didn't make me shed pounds but it does help keep the weight off and my mind clearer.
Has anyone read http://www.amazon.com/Insulin-Resistance-Diet-Revised-Updated-Fat-Making-Machine/dp/0071499849 ?
I just found an old copy at goodwill last weekend and have just started reading it. I am tempted to buy the updated version and see what has changed once I finish this version. Not sure how close to Keto it is.
Yeah, for me it makes perfect sense. I've read a lot about PCOS, insulin resistance, diabetes, nutrition etc and while I had gestational diabetes I could see how certain foods raise your blood sugar really high and then it crashes back down. I also tried eating after the "insulin resistance diet" http://www.amazon.com/Insulin-Resistance-Diet--Revised-Updated-Fat-Making-Machine/dp/0071499849/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324314058&sr=8-1 .. and that worked pretty well compared to other diets I've tried. It's about linking proteins with carbs in a certain way. But I gave up on it because I felt like I constantly had the "keto flu" .. it sucked. I don't mean for a few days but weeks, shaking, headaches, brain fog.
I can't say enough about this book. It's my go-to recommendation for anyone with IR and/or PCOS.
It explains insulin resistance, and gives the reader not so much a diet, but a method of eating (including timing and carb portion size) to minimize insulin spikes.
It's not a panacea, but it has a lot of sensible and helpful information for folks with IR.
