I've been in the states since 2011. I've been home twice. Once when my sister had a brain aneurysm that burst, and another time for a holiday which was the Christmas before last. I won't be home again until August 2016.
Look, what really worked for me was reading The Islandman by Thomas O'Crohan: http://www.amazon.com/Islandman-Oxford-Paperbacks-Tomas-OCrohan/dp/0192812335
He records his life on the Blasket Islands in the 1800s and early 1900s. This book changed my view on the world. I won't ruin the story for you but every one of his 10 kids died either by illness or some freak accident. His neighbours left for the states to never been seen again. They all lived in 10ft x 8ft houses, with all of their farm animals in living with them.
When you think of all the crap they had to go through, well we just live like kings man. Right now the world is as advanced, technologically, as it ever has been. You can skype family and friends - something millions of Irish who left never had the opportunity to do. You're a couple of flights away from home too.
In the meantime, I would say try to keep busy. I read loads which is pure escapism for me. I read over 100 books last year. No idea how many I've read so far this year - I stopped keeping track. Make new friends in the states. Enjoy what Chicago has to offer - go get some deep dish pizza. Travel around America if you can. Go to DC, NYC, Boston, maybe take a trip up to Canada. Meet your situation head on and embrace it, and know that there's thousands in the same boat as you all over the world.
