Nice way to put that question. Hadn't known about that particular scale before. I wasn't trying to write a political book, and I didn't use that many numbers, other than the oft-cited SLA Marshall numbers, with the now necessary disclaimer that they're not reliable. I tried to talk to guys who were there, mostly guys I'd met there, and have them tell me about it, their training, their deployments, their experiences, their lives since, and the killing piece of it was the focus because I'd been reporting on these wars and reading on them and very rarely so that discussed, and it felt like something was missing, so I wanted to try to have a frank, sober, discussion about it. And some guys, as I wrote, did what they did and carried on; they're doing just fine these days. Others had a different experience. A lot of factors involved.
