Your best bet would probably be the Hyrule Historia book as it contains the "official" timelines as well as lots of other lore and background information on the games.
Hyrule Historia. Great book for reasonably cheap, a real collectors item and essential to understanding Zelda timelines, previous games and lore.
Others are commenting that Zelda games don't have a great story but the Zelda Universe is actually an intricately woven tapestry. It highlights the neverending struggle between good and evil and the games balance exploration and puzzle-solving really well.
I think you might really benefit from reading The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia. It goes into the lore of each Zelda game and places it in the Zelda timeline. Granted, it'll take away from some of the suspense if you decide to go back and play the older games but their gameplay should hold your interest if you do.
I'd check your local library first - you might be able to check it out for free instead of spending the $30 or so.
The entire timeline of LoZ has been released as an official book called Hyrule Historia. They have zero intention of scrapping anything and I have no idea where you heard such a thing.

No problem. There's actually a couple of different timelines that have presented themselves through the games. Hyrule Historia breaks it all down but it's really unnecessary... each of the games stand on their own with their own unique story. https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Historia/dp/1616550414
I grabbed this bad boy for about $5 once. Every once in a while, I play the Zelda "found special item" sound and hold it up, just to remind everyone in my home how awesome I am.
eta: they never seem particularly impressed. dicks.
It's called "The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia." Pretty awesome book for Zelda junkies like myself. Bought mine back in 2013. Here's a link to amazon for ya!

My last art book was Hyrule Historia , a Zelda art book which was also published by Dark Horse Comics. I’m very excited for this one. :D
They are pretty much all on amazon and fairly priced

If you want you can check Hyrule Historia, just to get the idea, but honestly there is no reason to play in one specific order:
Zelda Timeline (old video but I like it)
Hyrule Historia
https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Historia/dp/1616550414
I love the mythology of Zelda, all the stories are amazing! I just love this games
They did do a skyward sword manga in the Hyrule historia (https://www.amazon.co.uk/Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Historia/dp/1616550414)
I got the Hyrule Historia book for Christmas from my friend. It's got tons of stuff in it like concept art and storylines from each game (Before Breath of the Wild) in it and how the timelines connect, basically it's like the history of Legend of Zelda. It's really awesome and is about $35 on Amazon. There's also the Encyclopedia and Arts and Artifacts books that I intend to pick up eventually
There's official books that designate timelines and what is connected to what. Its not just fan theories.
https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Historia/dp/1616550414
There's actually a whole book on it called Hyrule Historia. it has the timeline and a bunch of cool concept art from SS and other games.
I wish I played more Assassins Creed.. but from a Zelda fan standpoint, I would recommend the Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Historia. Maybe make a gift basket with a Assassins Creed or Zelda T-Shirt or hoodie. Ooo or a necklace that is Zelda themed.
Hope this helps!
If you want to read about it there's always this:
https://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Historia/dp/1616550414
its all documented in the hyrule historia https://www.amazon.ca/The-Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Historia/dp/1616550414
Sounds like you'd be interested in this.
I think that this would be cool. I think that people are misunderstanding you in this thread.
It would be something similar to this book that was released (and I own) for The Legend of Zelda series (http://www.amazon.com/The-Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Historia/dp/1616550414).
It wouldn't be released with the game, but it would be released at the end of the game cycle (such as a year after release) or it would be released with the next Treyarch COD. It would give indepth information from the developers about zombies, the history behind it and trivia. It would also include their full, official steps for completing the easter eggs along with other smaller easter eggs. I think it would be a really cool collectors item and I'd buy it.
Hyrule Historia is a cool Zelda present.
You could also buy her an actual ocarina of time. I have one and it's super easy to play if you have any musical background at all.
If they are really into the lore and character creation of the game give them this:
http://www.amazon.com/The-Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Historia/dp/1616550414
If they are just casually into LoZ look up zelda on etsy. There is a ton of stuff on there.
Wasn't Majora's mask literally the sequel to OOT? Like, it's the same link
Not that it would continue the story or anything, but it certainly isn't even 10 years apart
You can literally order the official timeline off of Amazon btw. It even has some more information about the series in whole
my bad. THIS IS THE PROPER LINK! (no pun intended) http://www.amazon.com/The-Legend-Zelda-Hyrule-Historia/dp/1616550414/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1347586761&sr=8-1&keywords=hyrule+historia
