Moitissier's and Knox-Johnston's accounts of their circumnavigations are very different and thus compliment each other very well. They raced against each other in the Golden Globe race in 1968 - ten years after the first Thunderbird was built.

A bearing compass is a forever tool, always useful as a backup to digital instruments and designed to last. The plastic sextant is a fun toy to play with, but isn't really accurate enough for navigation. But everyone uses GPS now, and a good metal sextant can be hundreds to thousands of dollars, so you can always do an upgrade gift in the future.
