Try some historical fiction perhaps? Many of these authors put a fair bit of work into the lives of the masses and how the actions of the rules effect them.
Try Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth and its sequel World Without End
The first is set in a fictional town in England in the 12 Century. The second is set in the same town two centuries later. The lives of the peasants are a large part of the story.

If you like How to Kill a Mockingbird, you should like other classics like The Pillars of the Earth or Grapes of Wrath. But sometimes it's good to take a break from fiction entirely and read a good biography or science book.
I just finished The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet. Highly recommended.
It makes the covers to glaringly and appallingly ugly... Like <em>Pillars of the Earth</em>...
