I teach in alternative education so there are things that have worked.

Other things that work:

• Your district's elementary reading software (we use Lexia)
• Vocabulary instruction. I use quizlet others use kahoot, both work. To prepare for the formative assessment I will do shades of meaning or vocabulary trading cards.
• Provide a reading purpose (a question to guide their annotations)
• Dyad reading. Wow, do they hate it but it works. This works best for literature.
• Partner reading. They also hate this. This works best for longer readings and nonfiction.
• Graphic organizers to gather textual evidence and write summaries.
• Writing, like actually writing. Turns out it is really hard for students to gain certain reading skills and recognize certain moves writers make if they are not themselves writing.

Mostly I cannot stress enough that students need the opportunity to engage in productive struggle with a text. So often we see kids struggle and step in and do the work for them, or we let them skip words. This doesn't work. Encourage students to ask questions and take breaks (but not quit) when they get frustrated.
