> Dude, they left because they wanted continue owning slaves. It's explicitly stated in the first paragraph of every single secession declaration with the sole exception being Texas, who mentioned it at the end of their declaration. > > Source: me, I checked a couple years ago during another one of these "debates".

I didn't write it, Thomas DiLorenzo did. Do you presume to have a higher level of historical knowledge regarding Lincoln than he? Have you read the book?
According to several scholars, Lincoln was not the romanticized, liberty loving hero that history has tried to paint him... He sounded like trash, really.

If you would like to learn more about the real history of the Civil War, read Thomas di Lorenzo's The Real Lincoln
Right moron, play the leftist dribble "you weren't a slave". You weren't either darling. Nor was anyone "black" today. Plenty of whites were slaves too, no white today can claim they experienced it as well. Shocker!
But sure, since I spent years on the subject and wrote numerous college papers on it, I'll chalk it off as a mistake since you're saying so. Fuck the professors and historians who've put in more hours than you ever will to look at reconstruction and post reconstruction.
I never decided what was better for them, you ignorant twit. The civil war was a disgusting act by a fascist warmongering president that created, AND HISTORICALLY DOCUMENTED AND VERIFIED, a post war shit hole in the south and created severe hatred, racism and violence for decadents that followed for decades upon decades. Why was every other country able to get rid of it without a civil war? Hmm?
A war wasn't started because they thought slavery was so immoral and evil kiddo. It was to keep the union together. If it was about "slavery" only, then why did Lincoln promise the south they could retain slavery if they stayed in the Union? Why did Lincoln want to deport them to South America? Read his own writings and his own inaugural address. I'm sure you get all hot thinking about Lincoln suspending habeous corpus too. Oh you don't? You don't even know about that? Oh..ok.
You're an emotional, dimwitted buffoon who believes that you can ignore facts and experts because of "feelings" on a subject.

Here, I'll get you started. Have fun not reading it or any other historian and expert that had documented 1) the civil war errors and 2) Reconstruction failures
Good point - he was indeed indifferent to minority rights, and used it only as a tool (which was positive in and of itself) to further his agenda...

Enjoyed my professor talking about this during my first year in college, it was a real eye opener.
Yes I read it a while back, its bullshit. it doesn't really talk about any of the truths about Lincoln and the civil war.
Take a look at the real truth of what happened and let me know when you start to open your eyes.

and btw im not trying to slot you into any categories by calling me a libertarian nut job. Im not even libertarian. If anything im progressive.
I just know my history and I know that the accepted view of what happened is complete bullshit. I know this because its still happening to this day. We are still under rule of a central government that is still raping and pillaging its people and trying to keep them under a control system called the federal government.
I just gave you the respected sources on what really happened, no go read them and shut up until you actually see what I am talking about.
Well respected titles are a bunch of bullshit. that's the same argument they gave with the Iraq war and look where that got us. Respected people told us there were No WMD and guess what, they lied! Just like 9/11. Well respect people said it was a terrorist attack by osama, bullshit again.
The book: The Real Lincoln: A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War Has good sources and its a very accurate picture of Lincolns history which blows holes right though official civil war story.
Some truth about Lincoln.
>No. I am proud to be a skeptic and a political moderate. I don't like to lie on the extremes with anything. I am just wondering what your point is. Are you saying that you are against every war no matter what?
I am saying that our much vaunted system of "checks and balances" has failed time and time again.
>I think there were good reasons to fight the Civil War and World War II.
I think you were fed -- and you generally accepted with only a superficial critique (if any) -- a lot of propaganda in your so called "history" classes.
And I should note that I do NOT mean that in a derogatory way. Students tend to believe and trust their teachers (who may themselves be quite sincere in believing that they are teaching "facts" or "objective history", etc) -- and even if they don't, then if/when they "check" what the teacher is telling them by doing some additional reading (in what minimal mainstream accepted sources the students have access to) and it confirms what the teacher is telling them, well it is generally understandable that they didn't "keep digging".
>I asked you a specific question about what your opposition was to the way they ran those wars. Is it because innocent people died in the war? I think that is inevitable in any war, no matter what measures we take. However, we can at least take measures to stop it.
Which of course misses the point.
The "wars" never should have happened in the first place. (There was certainly no reason for the US to become involved in WWII, and that goes 10x over for WWI... without the late US entry into which, by the way, virtually every agrees WWII probably would not have occurred.)
>but I think you are making some reference to specific war crimes conducted during the Civil War which I am not familiar with
I think you have only the "victor's whitewashed" understanding of what took place in and around the Civil War era; and the Hollywood "hagiographic" view of Lincoln (in line with the recent -- not to mention the many prior -- film).
To gain a wider view of the things you are missing... well for starters, you could try reading Tom DiLorenzo's The Real Lincoln: A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War -- that ought to at least open your eyes to the fact that you've been sold a proverbial "bill of goods" via what was fed to you in school and mainstream media about the man and the era.
I have been posting links to this book a lot lately!
The Real Lincoln" A New Look at Abraham Lincoln, His Agenda, and an Unnecessary War
The man who took in those coming on boats, yearning to be free, and enslaved them into the military to conquer the rest of the nation, so that we may all be enslaved to the point where children are brought up with the myth that he "ended slavery".... and a poet.
Really, lincoln was america's stalin. That people revere him, shows how profoundly ignorant americans are.
Think I'm wrong? Check the citations in the definitive work: http://www.amazon.com/Real-Lincoln-Abraham-Agenda-Unnecessary/dp/0761526463
>When he was running for higher office he suddenly had to take a stance on slavery and the idea that slaves should be freed and returned to their homes was one of many popular ideas he endorsed.
Wrong. He literally endorsed the Corwin amendment in his inaugural speech. An amendment that would have made it constitutionally illegal for the federal government to do anything about slavery.
>The source you posted makes it sound like a modern deportation scandal, which of course is meant to appeal to the modern reader and I believe is meant to encourage you to believe that Republicans are the party of deportation and being mean to illegal immigrants.
Arguing about who were the REAL racists in the mid 19th century is cringe and boomer pilled. The vast majority of people were racist dude.
The real truth is that Lincoln was a piece of shit who didn't give a fuck about slaves/slavery and invaded the south to enrich his railroad and banking buddies, starting a war that would kill 600,000 Americans. If you want to learn the truth about Lincoln I suggest reading Thomas J. Dilorenzo.
