One more thing: If you want to do something fun that gives you a better idea of the world your ancestors were living in, I recommend reading Theodor Storm's novel "Der Schimmelreiter". There are several translations with varying titles floating around, "The Rider on the White Horse" or "The Dikegrave". I heard good things about the James Wright translation, but cannot vouch for it.
