Well, it is roughly 100 years since the great famine caused by Stalin's 'collectivizing' farms and mostly shooting the farmers who were the previous owners, and who incidentally actually knew how to farm. Millions died. Interestingly, America largely saved the new Soviet Union from having millions more die- Herbert Hoover (yes that guy) coordinate a massive relief effort that shipping millions of tons of US grain to the Soviet Union. It's a story that neither country really wanted remembered for obvious reasons, but The Russian Job is a great book on how the relief effort was conceived and managed.
