If you fail it the first time, as most do, don't bother trying again until you've read through and understand everything in this book.
Most people find that the 20 hours was 20 wasted hours.
Just take the cheapest/fastest/stupidest online course, and study that book like it's your bible.
From what I've seen, probably 75%+ of people fail on their first try.
There is a decent possibility that the position you are applying for was previously filled by someone that had been doing mortgages for 10 years, but was too stupid to pass a mortgage test.
You need to complete the 20 hour NMLS exam first before you can do any additional states. I’m not trying to be a dick, but if the NMLS instructions are too challenging this is going to be a really hard test to pass. This link seems to help a little but it’s still directed to the NMLS page.

You’re going to need some education courses before you attempt the test. It should tell you in there. Oncourse does them. Test I think it’s like $100 a pop. You can’t take it more than three times in three months and a month in between each try. Then there’s a six month cool down between your next set of three. I used the affinity courses as follow up study material.
Either way study hard, take practice tests but rely on your book knowledge don’t study the practice tests. The actual test will use way different verbiage than your practice tests. I found this book to be useful.

But why? I’m curious. What’s the game plan? Is your boss trying to set up a brokerage? What’s the payoff for the effort?

I read this book cover to cover twice. Highlighting major points and really soaking in the content. This book, along with compucram were huge in helping me pass the exam. Good luck! You can't study enough for this exam.
