Chess. I've recently learned it and now I'm rated 2000 on Lichess. But I still keep on hanging peioces from time to time. It's horrible.
EDIT: for those of you who asked, this is the book I used to increase my rating fast.
That depends. If you really just started now then maybe a kickstarter guide is what you need.
Otherwise if you already have some playing strength, something like My System by Nimzowitsch is a great place to start.
Good quality chess books. I recently started a year ago (am 2000 on lichess at the moment), and I owe it to books.
EDIT: for those of you who asked, here is a link to a "kickstarter guide" that helped
I'm rated 2000 on Lichess. At your level, if you want to "level up" quickly, you need to do these things:
Alternatively, you can invest in a "kickstarter guide", which teaches many of these things much better than me:
I don't know if this is any help but there is this guide that has helped a lot of players rated about your level before. It's not about "positional" chess, but mainly important chess concepts. I think that is more important at your level than positional tricks.
Chess: below the 2000 ELO level, don't learn openings by heart. None of those openings you learn will ever come up, and you're wasting time on memorizing rather than learning.
Pick up a theory book instead, or play over the board games. For new players, there already exist kickstarter books that teach all the good stuff without opening theory (like this one).
Sure :) I actually began playing not too long ago. I still suck, but not as much as I used to. Now I'm rated 1800 on Lichess (rapid, mind you, on bullet I am still getting my ass kicked every day).
I find that books aimed specifically at lower level players are the way to learn quickly (like this this one) . Books in the style of "kickstarters" are way better than complicated GM strategy ones and youtube lessons where you forget everything 5 minutes later.
That's a very good point, and shows that you shouldn't memorize openings at lower levels. I've always thought that books aimed specifically at lower level players are the way to go forward (like this one). Books in the style of "kickstarters" are way better than Youtube quick win openings.
If you're into chess (which is quite popular right now), and want to boost your playing strength, you check out this kickstart guide.
Note: it's mostly aimed at beginner players, but some less-than-beginners can still get a trick or two out of it.
100% agree. Got from 0 to 1800 rating on Lichess in under half a year. Great fun!
EDIT: for those of you who asked, here is a great guide that I used.
One that has been recommended here already (for complete beginners), which is quite good: this book.
It will help you kickstart your chess.
You can get a "kickstarter" guide (something like this).
I've started a few years ago and now I'm rated 2000 on Lichess (rapid).
Chess... I picked up the game a few years ago, now I'm rated about 2000 on Lichess.org. It's not great, but not terrible. The fans can sometimes be quite toxic though, and there are some cheaters online.
EDIT: for those of you who asked, I used this book to boost my rating in the first year.
Maybe what you need instead is a "kickstarter" book. It helps you master all the basics and increase your rating quite quickly. I used this one last year, and now I'm 2000 on Lichess (rapid).
That's a lot of mistakes... Maybe you can learn general opening/middlegame principles? This helped for me.
Learn good opening principles.
Just a quick reminder of this short, but highly educational book. I know several people who have used it to quickly gain rating poitns on Lichess.
You can find it here.
You probably want a kickstarted guide. This one has helped some people I know to boost their ratings quite quickly.
Get a kickstarter guide, something like this
Play chess. I got from 0 to 2000 rapid on Lichess in 2 years.
PS. For those who asked, this is a guide I used in the beginning
Maybe you need a "kickstarter" book, something like this
I fully agree. I got from 900 to 1800 rating on Lichess during the pandemic.
PS. For those of you who PM'd me, this is the book I used to kickstart my chess.
HELL YEAH! I've been trying to learn chess during lockdown and I've just recently passed the 1900 mark on Lichess.org! All because I stopped watching youtube videos and... actually read a book.
This one, to be precise.
Chess! Since last year (from a beginner) I finally reached 1900 rating on Lichess!
EDIT: For those of you who asked, I used this to kickstart my learning curve.
Chess. Just reached 1900 rating on Lichess. It's a fantastic way to stay focused and keep the brain working.
EDIT: for those of you who asked, here is a kickstart guide that I used to get better.
I've played too. Got to 1900 on lichess from 0 since the pandemic started.
EDIT: for those who asked: here is a good kickstart guide that I used.
Finally reached 1900 rating in chess (on lichess.com) and I did not even know the rules at the beginning of this year.
EDIT: for those of you who asked, here is a kickstart guide I used.
If he's a musician (like me), he might like a live recording of his favourite music (or a ticket to a concert).
If he's starting out chess, like my brother who is currently learning, he has been recommended a few things by his coach: a chess kickstart guide, and a chess companion book.
Have you tried this?
