If you want a complete meal plan that is high in lean protein and vegetables and low in sugar you can go to your library and check out South Beach Diet Supercharged. It gives recipes for 3 meals, 2 snacks, and dessert for every day for two weeks. I found the book to be very helpful for nutrition and meal plans. My library had lots of South Beach Diet books--I have found them to be a great resource for healthy meal ideas. It's not the most popular diet on this sub, but I prefer some guidelines or a plan to follow.
EDIT: This plan is heavy on cooking. If you don't like cooking, it's probably not the best plan for you.
Basically, you ingest calories as either fat, carbs or protein. Fat and carbs are similar in that they taste delicious and make you fat; protein actually tastes like shit, but it's the single biggest factor in how not-hungry you feel after a meal.
In order to lose weight, you want to eat food that's protein-rich, low-fat, low-sugar. That sounds like it should taste awfully bland, right? Not quite - you can use low-calorie condiments like salt, spices, herbs, MSG, and hot peppers.
Unfortunately, the American food landscape is extremely fat-rich and carb-rich. Healthy food is expensive in America; blame government subsidies. There are also very few opportunities to buy pre-cooked food which is low-fat, low-carb, high-protein, so in order to lose weight you'll probably have to cook at home. For recipes, I personally like The South Beach Diet Supercharged - my ex lost sixty pounds in less than a year using it, and the food is delicious.
As a rule of thumb, eat more vegetables, less grain. dairy, nuts and fruits are good for your health, but they're not exactly low in calories. Meat is a good source of protein, particularly lean meat like poultry.
Also, take care of your gut bacteria. Probiotic foods are good for your gut bacteria; live-cultured yogurt is a good example. Transformed foods and artificial sweeteners are thought to negatively impact gut bacteria, which could be a problem when trying to lose weight.
Losing weight can be a serious commitment, because you have to design your lifestyle around eating well and exercising. The rewards can be amazing; it's good for your health, it's good for your social life, it lets you in on life experiences that were previously impossible for you to participate in.
