Hey man! I just started reading X-Men. I started with Chris Claremont's run and it's some of the most amazing comics I've read. I recommend going on Amazon and buying this:
The Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Volume 1 (New Printing) https://www.amazon.com/dp/0785185690/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_UIypzbS6TVCNH
Expensive, I know. But it collects Claremont's first 30-35 issues or so. It's a big book that'll keep you busy for sure.
No, dude, I'm talking about the omnibi. lol The only ones. The ones marked omnibus. Claremont's Uncanny X-Men has currently three omnibus volumes.
You tryna play mind games with me, bub?
The Uncanny X-Men Omnibus Volume 1. Vol 1 is technically not in production anymore, so you won't be able to find it priced fairly on amazon. You should be able to find a decent price on ebay, or other book sites (book depository, abebooks), though.
The omnibus includes the first 40ish issues of Chris Claremont's defining run on Uncanny X-men.
Just to make sure im looking at the right one here this is it right? http://www.amazon.com/Uncanny-X-Men-Omnibus-New-Printing/dp/0785185690/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1450743862&sr=1-1&keywords=The+Uncanny+X-Men+Omnibus+Volume+1
If you don't mind 1970's writing/art, start with Claremont's long X-Men run:
Otherwise, start with some modern essentials:
Animated
X-Men: The Animated Series | 5 seasons, 76 episodes, 1992-1997
SIDENOTE: If you like the animated TV series, then check out the comic version:
X-Men: Evolution | 4 seasons, 52 episodes, 2000-2003
Wolverine and the X-Men | 1 season, 26 episodes, 2009
X-Men Anime | 1 season, 12 episodes, 2011
Live Action
My personal ranking of the X-Men related movies (from best to worst):
Depending on your price range, you could consider as something as a trade paperback (softcover collection) or a hardcover/omnibus that would collect more issues of the story.
Based on the stories and characters you mentioned, some suggestions you might want to look into include:
Uncanny X-Men Omnibus: Volume 1, Volume 2, and/or Volume 3
New X-Men Omnibus
Astonishing X-Men Ultimate Collection: Book 1 and/or Book 2
X-Men Legacy Legion Omnibus
Shop around, instocktrades.com is a great comic dedicated site with great pricing, Amazon has a great selection, or you could also use a site like Comic Shop Locator to find a dedicated comic shop near you that could also help you out with suggestions.
If your husband reads books digitally on a tablet or laptop, something to consider might be a subscription to a service like Marvel Unlimited ($70 for 1 year) or Comixology Unlimited ($6/month). Both act as a kind of "Netflix for comics" in that with an active membership you can browse and read thousands and thousands of comics. Marvel Unlimited offers access to Marvel Comics titles only, and has an extensive selection of 20,000+ comics. Comixology Unlimited offers a smaller selection of Marvel Comics but also titles from other comic book publishers such as Image Comics, Dark Horse Comics, IDW, Boom! Studios and more. It offers a selection of 10,000+ comics, mostly offering the first or second collection of a series as a sampler which you could then decide to purchase separately if you really enjoy a series.
Happy shopping! I hope this helps!
Then what are these then bro?

It's these ones, but unless there's a new printing you will probably have to look for a better deal. If you're in Europe, you can also look at the uk or de version of Amazon to see if there's a better deal for them. Or on other comic sites (Book depository maybe)

So I just found this post, and decided to start with Claremont's stuff in the 70's.
I found a couple omnibuses on Amazon, and wanted to make sure they're the right ones.
Am I headed in the right direction with these two?
I also found this one, but I'm not sure where it ties in with everything.
Classic Essentials
If you don't mind 1970's writing/art, then start with Claremont's long, acclaimed X-Men run:
Modern Essentials
Are you referring to this vol 1 and this vol 2? because they are both in print right now and your post made it sound like they aren't. Though I would say for most cases better to buy Marvel omnibuses and various editions fairly early since they do often stop reprinting them or will end up reprinting them in a different book that collects a different number of issues.
