I'm a Norwegian and I recommend the eddas and heimskringla (History of the Norwegian kings). We Norwegians can always look back and say that we were the toughest guys. A pretty badass saga is the saga about Egil Skallagrimsson.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Viking-World-James-Graham-Campbell/dp/0711218005 is also a good general read.
On viking movies I'd watch the Icelandic ones: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0087432/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0095346/ http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102081/
I also like Beowulf and Grendel: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0402057/ There are some other movies based on the myth, like the animated Beowulf, and the movie the 13th warrior. But those Icelandic ones are the most realistic.
There are some pretty cool viking comics made in Denmark, not sure if they are translated into English. They are called Valhalla, and they also made a comic movie. Some pretty good English comic books are the series Northlanders. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northlanders
Neil Gaiman has some writings inspired by Norse mythology, American Gods and Odd and the frost giants.
