Wellll, not so fast. He also helped give rise to America's consumerist throw-away society. During one of the recessions during his administration, the one with his name, he famously equated buying superfluous things with patriotism, and suggested Americans buy stuff they didn't really need.

I read the book from cover to cover, and while it is about much more than planned obsolescence, that is his main topic. The book was written about the late 1950's, during the postwar economic boom when many in the US had disposable income. Manufacturers saw this as an opportunity to get people to buy things they didn't need.
