Buy one of those, once the temp of the center of the chicken is 165 degrees F then it's good to eat. Don't go by the color of the outside of the chicken, that doesn't tell you anything.
Thermapen's too rich for my blood but the twelve buck instant-read thermometer was a pretty good investment.
My waterstones. Especially 200,800,1000, and 4000 grit. My 8000 grit stone was a vanity purchase, not an investment.
Not to freak you out too much, but you can get this superpower for 12 dollars
I use this cheap ThermoPro. Works just fine for home cooking.
Accurate accurate to ±0.9F in 3-5 secs. Backlight on one press, and magnet on the back to put on the fridge.
I have a cheap $14 Thermopro off Amazon and I have zero complaints. It works fast and feels relatively sturdy. If it breaks on me, I may replace it with a thermopen, but so far I’ve had no trouble. I am someone who babies their possessions, though, so if you are harder on your tools, the more expensive option may be better for you. If $14 feels like a low risk spend, I’d advise you to gamble on the cheap version.
Just make sure your tea is 60c or lower when you drink it. You can get a cheap cooking thermometer to check pretty easily. If you want to cool it down faster, add milk or pour it between different containers after it's steeped to your liking.
Also, if I understand the study correctly, this risk only applies to people drinking more than 700ml per day of >60c tea. So if you only drink a cup (250ml) a day of hot tea you should be okay too.
Even at 700ml+ with temps above 60c, the increased risk isn't that significant. A 90% increased risk isn't even twice as much as people who don't drink hot beverages. That's like the difference between a 0.004% risk of getting esophegal cancer and an 0.008% risk (made up numbers, but hopefully this puts things into perspective).
Can’t go wrong with the top reviewed one on Amazon. My first one (another company) was trash. This one is great.

I feel attacked.
My ThermoPro has lasted me 3 years so far with no problems and I don't even know how many times I've replaced the battery in this old Sysco one I got at a job like 7 years ago.
This is exactly right. Worth investing $15 in a digital probe thermometer, they are very handy to have around.
I recommend this: ThermoPro TP03B Digital Instant Read Meat Thermometer Kitchen Cooking Food Candy Thermometer with Backlight and Magnet for Oil Deep Fry BBQ Grill Smoker Thermometer https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01IHHLB3W/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_1T39AJW0PW6MH13EWXKQ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Hell yea. I’ve gone through 3 of these so far and will continue to buy them as I somehow break them ThermoPro TP03 Digital Instant Read Meat Thermometer Kitchen Cooking Food Candy Thermometer with Backlight and Magnet for Oil Deep Fry BBQ Grill Smoker Thermometer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IHHLB3W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_6XV0E8827HD443DBZBND?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
> ive seen people rave about this one : https://www.amazon.com/ThermoPro-Digital-Instant-Thermometer-Kitchen/dp/B01IHHLB3W
There was a guy posting earlier this week that he’s gone through two of those units even though he babies them in about 2-3 months each.
Cheap or expensive, they all break eventually. My current one still works after being left outside near the grill, in a rainstorm. cost like $15 and I’m going to use it again in an hour for grilling up a pile of chicken legs. Fast readings and cheap enough to not freak out if it breaks. The folding feature and lit screen are nice too.
I don't believe there is a way. I believe it's just associated with cooks. I will say that with Prime Day, if you have Amazon Prime, I just bought an instant read thermometer Monday for $9.99 and it arrived yesterday. It would be great if the included thermometer had more functionality though.
This is the one I got. It has gone back up slightly.

I made this cake a couple of weeks ago. First time preserving lemons, making a layer cake, lemon curd, Italian meringue. I used a blow torch that we keep in the garage. Don't miss out on torching meringue, best part. (Borrow a friend's or neighbor's?)
I *think* Claire recommended fresh whipped cream as an alternative frosting but I could be confusing it with someone else's recipe. You could do her buttercream frosting as a white crumb coat and then decorate with fresh flowers or candied lemon peel.
The Italian meringue is scary, but as a first timer--who will absolutely make it again--my first attempt exceeded humble expectations, but that's because I was OCD about the temp. I used a $10 meat thermometer that I rubber-banded onto a metal clamp on the side of the pot. Perfect, dreamy frosting. Looked impressive, tasted even better.
I watched a couple of videos on frosting layer cakes and Italian meringue. You can do it! A couple of other people in here suggested splitting this cake into a two day project and I agree:
Day One: Bake the cakes and make the curd.
Day Two: Assemble, frost, decorate.
The “instant read” ones only take a second or two to get an accurate (accurate enough certainly) reading.
Something like this below is what I’m talking about. It’s under $15(USD) and it has a 4.5 rating with almost 51,000 ratings- which is pretty impressive to me. After a quick search, if I were looking for one, this is probably what I’d go with. But fwiw, I do not own this model so I can’t speak for it personally, and I’m not affiliated with it in any way (so, caveat emptor).

So I have quite a few thermometers. I can't recall the names of all of them but one is a cheap instant read I bought on amazon, I have one that works with my iPhone, and I have another one that has a digital display that I can carry with me and keeps track of temps with two probes.
The best of all of them is the cheap instant read that I bought here.
The other two work fine, but it seems this one is the most accurate and the cheapest (by far) of all of them.
The leave-in thermometer sounds like a great idea. I have this one from Amazon but I haven’t used it yet since I’m unsure about cooking meat. I guess the worst case scenario as long as I make sure it’s the right temperature is I throw it out and try again.
There are some thermoworks alternatives on Amazon that have great reviews. Like this one...
Plus, if it breaks after a year, it's cheap enough to buy another one.
I've bought cheap ones from grocery stores that took too long to display temperatures.
My last one broke so I ordered this the other day. It's arriving today so I don't know how it works. I don't have many requirements other than that it reads temperatures quickly.
Everyone should own a cheap instant read meat thermometer! $15 (or less) is a great way to ensure your meats aren't getting over or under done.
https://smile.amazon.com/ThermoPro-TP03A-Digital-Cooking-Thermometer/dp/B01IHHLB3W/
The batteries last forever unless you forget to turn it off.
There's a quick read thermometer on sale for $12 on Amazon. It's not a Thermapen, which I gather is this sub's preferred digital thermometer, but something called "Thermopro". I was wondering if anyone's had any experience with this one and if it's worth the $12.
Thanks!
It's a necessity. Both a good probe for instant reads (something like this) and something you can leave in while you bake (I use and really like this) are must-haves. I swear I don't work for ThermPro and I'm not a shill. They're just the cheapest options on Amazon and I find they work great and hold up.
The other thermo pro on amazon bends in half and has a fridge magnet on the back of it 29% off https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B01IHHLB3W/ref=ppx\_yo\_dt\_b\_asin\_image\_o01\_s01?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Cooking doesn’t have to be too scary! I noticed your comment about not knowing what temperature to cook things to. One easy way to start learning is to cut whatever your cooking into evenly sized pieces and start from there. Sautee some pieces of chicken in a pan on medium heat and don’t mess with them too much - you can pull out a piece every now and then to check how done it is (cut it in half!) and put it back in the pan if it’s not done yet. It’s a good way to learn how quickly your food cooks. You could also get a meat thermometer . They are like $20 and an excellent investment - I wish I had mine sooner because it takes the guesswork out! You’ll just have to keep a chart handy for internal cooking temps.
Other than that, I echo everyone else’s sentiments. Start with easy starches like rice and pasta. You can add literally anything to them and they’ll taste great. This might be a good place to start to build a basic grocery list.
You’re going to do awesome. At the end of the day you just have to cook well enough to keep yourself alive! It’ll all go up from there. Good luck with finals!!!
This is the one I got. Mega happy with it.
I have two thermometers of different brands like these: https://www.amazon.com/ThermoPro-TP03A-Digital-Instant-Thermometer/dp/B01IHHLB3W/
They both still work very well and I wouldn't pay more for one, if I had to pay more I'd get one that can be monitored remotely like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Thermometer-Bluetooth-Grilling-Carrying-Included/dp/B075L7V6NZ/ref=sr_1_6?keywords=meat+thermometer+android&qid=1551422020&s=gateway&sr=8-6
Oops! Sorry. Lemme try that again
I haven’t tried a taste test.
I use a standard digital instant read - this one. It’s under US$15.

If you don't have one, I'd suggest buying in a digital food thermometer. I have one similar to this - you can usually find them locally I'm places like Walmart or home Depot too. If you cook your chicken to an internal temp of 75degC for 12-16min, you'll be in the clear for ensuring any salmonella that may have been present is neutralized. Salmonella on your hands from handling raw chicken is IMO a bit overblown - as long as you wash your hands / knife / cutting surface with warm soapy water, you'll be fine. And by the way - the risk for salmonella being present in the first place is low - the meat should actually be clean enough when being sold that you could eat it raw (I still wouldn't tho lol). That said, I totally understand your concern, I used to be hyper aware of it and worried until I nailed down my chicken cooking technique / cleaning steps.
The best way I've found to cook raw (and thawed) chicken breast is to trim it / discard any scraps or fat you don't want, then pay the chicken dry with a paper towel (top and bottom). Spice both sides (whatever you want, I usually do salt/pepper/some zesty herb spice I have but you can use anything). While doing this have a pan with a small amount of oil in it heating up to medium. Once spiced up, put chicken in the pan and cook one side for 6-8 min. While doing this wash your hands / knife / cutting board. Flip the chicken, cook the other side another 6-8 min. Check temp, if it's 75degC in the thickest part it's good to go. If not, cook it a bit longer until it is. I usually cook my chicken covered with a lid as well as it traps the heat /cooks it faster. Once it's done, I move it onto a plate and let it sit for a few min before cutting it, which makes cutting it like butter. Literally perfect chicken every time I do it this way. :)
If it's frozen I throw it in my instant pot and pressure cook it for pulled chicken but I always prefer the pan cook. I love those rotisserie chickens too, they reheat really well in an air fryer.
No need to spend a ton of money, this one works just fine

Get an instant one. I have this one ThermPro TP03
Yeah, get two thermometers:
Those were just top results to show what to look for, not actual suggestions for specific products. I haven't used either.
Just buy a better one. You dont need like a 100 dollar one, and if you want an "instant read" one prepare to pay more. I use like a 6 or 7 dollar one that as long as you take care of it, it will work. I actually have bought 2 ( found it at costco for those costcos that still have an isle with like cheap but well made restaraunt supplies ( knives with plastic handles, ladles, bowls, etc that are restaraunt quality in terms of being able to be used a lot and take it, but arent like bank breaking ).
I also have like a digital thermometer that has a probe thats connected to like a wireless transmitter that connects to like a thermometer main unit and can tell me when something in a smoker or oven reaches the temp ive set it to warn me out.
ive seen people rave about this one : https://www.amazon.com/ThermoPro-Digital-Instant-Thermometer-Kitchen/dp/B01IHHLB3W
or some other brands of like flip digital instant read thermometers.
The one i use was like 7 bucks and i cant even find a picture of it online or on amazon so it must be so cheap that those places dont sell it. it is white, with like a cover for the pointy end thats the same size as the body of the thermometer.
Edit: i got unlazy and went to the kitchen to find it. Its called an "update international ( the logo which is small has the p and d of the word update as like one letter designed like that with an arrow on the top of the d).
Model number: thdp-450
amazon doesnt have stock, but this is the one i use. Here is the link and you might be able to find it online or at target/walmart/costco

Buy a meat thermometer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IHHLB3W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_fabt1_pKkTFb8SM56HZ Any advice you get will be done 100x better if you can check the temp before you stop cooking. Then let the breast rest.
thanks for this! you make it sound doable :D
I have an instant-read similar to this https://www.amazon.com/ThermoPro-Digital-Instant-Thermometer-Kitchen/dp/B01IHHLB3W/ but would be willing to get a leave-in if that would be better
This is my favorite chicken thigh recipe: (skin-on)
Stir the spices together, pat on, bake in the oven. Voila, an amazing dinner for nearly zero effort!
Note: Chicken can be a little bit tricky to cook perfectly (and perfectly safe); I recommend getting an instant-read thermometer so that you can nail a well-cooked bird every time. Thermapens (the "good" brand-name version) go for about a hundred bucks, but Amazon to the rescue - they have one for $13 shipped: (takes a few seconds longer than a 3-second Thermapen)
https://www.amazon.com/ThermoPro-TP03A-Digital-Cooking-Thermometer/dp/B01IHHLB3W
Kenji from Serious Eats also has a really excellent 5-ingredient fried chicken sandwich that uses skinless chicken thighs:
https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2015/08/five-ingredient-fried-chicken-sandwich-recipe.html
If you were a fan of how McDonald's used to make their buttermilk crispy chicken sandwich (back when they were actually good, pre-transfats awareness, lol), then you'll love this recipe! You can do it at easily at home in any basic cast-iron system like a wok, skillet, or dutch oven (a 10" cast-iron skillet goes for $15 on Amazon & will literally last you your entire life if you take care of it).
It is just a digital instant read meat thermometer.
i'm using this instant read hand held because it is cheap and had good reviews on amazon. ThermoPro TP03

Awhile ago I bought this one on Amazon for $9.99, it's $14 now.
You can control your activity level. You can control your portions. Honestly, the really boring diet of broccoli and chicken is actually pretty easy to purchase.
Steam Ready Broccoli Florets are $2.09: Giant Broccoli
3 Frozen Chicken Breasts are $11.49: Giant Chicken Breasts
You bake the chicken at 400 degrees until they reach an internal temperature of 165. You should put a thermometer, here's one for about $15: Amazon Meat Thermometer
Also, Try the 5k Runner Program: Apple Link
Doing something is better than doing nothing. Try small steps. Walk to school. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good.
I’ve got this. So far, so good:
ThermoPro TP03A Digital Instant Read Meat Thermometer https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IHHLB3W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_KH.ECb4T5CYAR
100ml dev + 400ml water. I have this thermometer and I usually get it to 68-69F because by the time I get everything ready it warms up to 70F.
Hoping something like this works well enough?
Here's a basic water report for my area, not really sure how official or accurate it is since it's done by a water purifier company, but it does basically match the chlorine levels of the official city report which unfortunately isn't detailed in the makeup of the water.
not really - Both of mine were basically no-name brands I picked up at the grocery store.
Here's some amazon links in the sub $20 range:
https://www.amazon.com/ThermoPro-TP03A-Digital-Cooking-Thermometer/dp/B01IHHLB3W/
https://www.amazon.com/Habor-Thermometers-Instant-Thermometer-Electronic/dp/B01LKRHW3E/
Really personal preference on what you want for screen size, portability. Some will have a basic temp reference chart on it for different types of meat.
That checks the surface temperature. Cooking meat to a temperature is based on internal temperature.
You gotta get this: ThermoPro TP03A Digital Food Cooking Thermometer Instant Read Meat Thermometer for Kitchen BBQ Grill Smoker https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01IHHLB3W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_V.vUzbKSW5G09
This is also useful: New and Improved All-Weather AmazingRibs.com Meat Temperature Guide Magnet https://www.amazon.com/dp/B005VPVMQK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_-awUzbVZ7JCYA
Any advice for a nice, instant thermometer? I'm looking at this cheap one right now, or this one, or another recommendation.
EDIT: I bought the LavaTools Javelin.
