It takes less than an hour to setup RetroPie. How is that a lot of work? RetroPie is also very polished.
We got bored at work one day and a bunch of us ordered some Pi's, some nice cases, and proper controllers and once they arrived it was about an hour to set up before we were all off playing games.
P.S: This was the controller: https://www.amazon.ca/Tomee-NES-Retro-Classic-Controller/dp/B00281PFQI
Yeah, I have be very careful when I start playing an RTS. Usually it goes, feed him, change him, swaddle him, and then rock him to sleep. Once he's passed out for 5-10 minutes, then I have a decent shot at being able to get a game or two in. Other than that, if I do play a real-time game I try to make sure it's a SP game that I can pause if I need to.
I am looking forward to introducing him to two player games as he gets older. I have two of these and will be introducing him to all the old classics.
I was logged in on Amazon and then I searched for the retrolink and then cut n pasted so I could post a link. It must have added it automatically. B/c I am ignorant of all this referral business. Where do I even look to see if I have ever earned any referral points or whatever they do?
This is what it looks like when I cut n paste...didn't change a thing.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/NES-Nintendo-Classic-Style-Controller/dp/B00281PFQI I have no idea how easy it would be to get it to work. Someone in the reviews said it works well with their Pi though.

It feels like the real thing! Just avoid their SNES controller, it is cheap crap.
This is about the closest i have seen. Build a Nintendo NES PC
Edit: USB NES Controller
You can get them for $11 on AMazon, or get the snes controller for $4. Depending on the phone you may need an adapter and/or some programs to make it sync up. Just Google the name of the phone and 'nes/snes controller'.
Well, if you are like me. You hook an S-Video cable up to your TV and play with this: http://www.amazon.com/Retro-Classic-Controller-Nintendo-Entertainment-System/dp/B00281PFQI
