And a water flosser is much, much more effective than regular floss. Takes a week or so to get used to, but when you've got it down you'll never go back.
Also last suggestion, if you're using a normal tooth brush...get an electric one. Incomparable to manual one.
Better breath comes from better oral hygiene and having the correct tools makes a world of difference.
Oh no! Have you tried one of those metal U-shaped tongue cleaners (linked below)? I can’t stand not cleaning my tongue every morning, and if I focus on keeping it out, I usually manage not to gag when I clean it.

otherwise you can find an Orabrush at target/walmart. Once you scrape you never go back. Mouth so cleeaaan.
Yep! This is the one that I purchased from Amazon. I keep one in the shower so that I can use it when I shower. I've got a small mirror that I use for shaving but it also comes in handy for checking where I'm doing the scraping on my tongue. It isn't necessary to use a mirror, and you can still get a clean tongue without using a mirror.

Been hooked on this for a year and swear by its wonders.
I used to do this a lot, too. It's become less of an issue after I took these three steps (I did all three at relatively the same time, so I'm not sure which one was the silver bullet):
Started scraping my tongue. Use a metal one like one of these. You'd be surprised at the amount of gunk that you'd pick up using it.
Cut dairy from my diet almost entirely. I still have a good bougie cheese or pizza every now and again, but never during the week when I record.
Started doing a sinus rinse daily. I use the Neilmed bottle with distilled water, and it's opened up my airways and reduced my saliva content drastically.
I've never tried an orabrush, it looks interesting. I like this: Tongue Scraper with Travel Case - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LAY47D0/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_HGC926QXS27XEWPTFZHZ?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
It gives me good leverage with both hands to really scrape a good layer from my tongue with a pull motion all the way from back to front. It's a different color altogether after, light red, when I'm done.
As far as a water flosser goes it's I got one ~18 months ago and will never go back. I've sometimes seen things fall out of my mouth while using it. You'll probably experience some gum bleeding between gums and teeth when starting out, that eventually goes away.
In the end I think the increased water intake on top of it all is what made a big difference.
Not op, but I've been using this one for a year with good results.

Certain medications can make your mouth very dry (I have the same problem). Also, regarding brushing your tongue, use a tongue scraper, not a toothbrush. It gets a lot more gunk off, I've found them to be helpful. https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B01LAY47D0/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fabc_A2d2FbHQQW956
use one of these, the therabreath mouthwash linked below it is also very nice. https://www.amazon.com/MasterMedi-Stainless-Professional-Eliminate-Non-synthetic/dp/B01LAY47D0/ref=sr_1_6?dchild=1&keywords=tongue+scraper&qid=1596341174&sr=8-6

Yes, you're may be right that you need to set an appointment to the dentist for a deep clean.
Here's my oral routine that I do twice a day: Flossing Brushing Gargling diluted 3% Hydrogen Peroxide (this what helps me the most) Scrape my tongue with this And chew an oral probiotic here's what I'm using
This might give you a little insight on what to do as this lessen my bad breath substantially but didn't fully get rid of it. Recently I incorporated milk kefir into my diet and so far I'm reaping the good benefits of it.
God bless you, hopefully you'll be able to find the cure for your bad breath.
It's a tongue scraper. Here's the exact brand
I swear by this one

But using this vs just brushing. Night and day.

You could try using a tongue scraper, that could just be accumulated gunk. You might notice your breath getting better too.
