I've run this one on my SO's desktop for a while: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B08KHV7H1S
Haven't had any issue with it. Rock solid 200 up/down. The only caveat is you should just use the driver that Windows 10 automatically uses for it and not install the TP-Link driver, cuz that thing sucks.
No problem. It's not too hard, but if you are not willing to take the risk, you can also opt for a usb wifi adapter
I use this for my PC. It really kicked up the internet speed on it Limited-time deal: TP-Link USB WiFi Adapter, AC1300Mbps Dual Band 5dBi High Gain Antenna 2.4GHz/ 5GHz Wireless Network Adapter for Desktop PC (Archer T4U Plus)- Supports Windows 10/8.1/8/7, Mac OS 10.9 - 10.14 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08KHV7H1S/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_dl_HC3C9FS3GZT2RPSTYY9C?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
hi
typically PCIe are the go to for wifi, and i personally had one; in my experience the USB ones are shit. HOWEVER, i came across this one a year ago, and it is very solid and in fact better than my PCIe one. I have gigabit, and i get around 400 download/upload with this adapter. granted it looks a bit ugly, but i plug it into my mobo and hide it behind my case and it’s gone
I personally find some USB adapters easier to deal with for people who don't need something fancy. Just don't get the tiny ones that can barely catch the signal.
I stuck this on my folks' PC and it's worked fine for them: https://www.amazon.com/USB-WiFi-Computer-Network-Adapter/dp/B08KHV7H1S
If you really need ethernet, get a white cable that can easily blend into walls and baseboard, and run that along. Flat ethernet cables usually are disliked by networking folks, but they do make it easier to run along the wall.
I can't know for sure without being in the room with you. I'd just try something like this https://www.amazon.com/wireless-USB-WiFi-Adapter-PC/dp/B08KHV7H1S
I'd just grab something like this, honestly: https://www.amazon.com/TP-Link-Archer-T4U-Plus-AC1300Mbps/dp/B08KHV7H1S
Something like this would work well.
As others have mentioned here so long as it supports 5GHz you should be good.
Personally if you are playing for longer sessions you may want to get a bigger external wifi adapter for better heat dissipation and better long term performance.
But that is mostly my paranoia speaking, if you are just using it for a short time, like 2 hour session or even just a few days, any old one would do. Just make sure it is AX or AC so you can use Wifi 6 and/or 5GHz.
You can also just try your local Target or other super market store with an electronics department, they might have a dongle there to purchase for cheaper than online.

If you put a WiFi router at the modem, he can still plug in with the wire to the router, so no more speed loss than you putting a switch there. The new WiFi adapters and routers can go up to 1300Mbps which is faster than whatever ISP connection you have, even if you have gigabit.
Awesome WiFi adapter for your computer:

Then just get a decent new router, depending on how much money you are willing to spend. I love the Tplink stuff.

A more advanced and more expensive model:

They have them in all shapes and sizes and prices in between.
Just a thought. By the time you pay someone to come install a wire and do a professional installation, in addition to buying a cheap switch, you could just do it yourself with WiFi and achieve the same result with no holes in your house.
Thinking about it some more, a USB extension cable would let you put any USB adapter anywhere. Here is my pick:
