A lot of good comments, I wanted to add a suggestion I haven't seen.
There are tv stands that you mount the tv to instead of using the tv's stand kind of like this:

Best of both worlds, get the centre up higher and keep the TV closer
But they're impossible to find in the UK...

I had a similar problem and ended up with a black metal TV stand, using glass shelves. The TV mounts to the stand, rather than sitting on it.
