>I don't know how common this tactic is on the right
The right have made a cottage industry out of reporting on and mocking every word ever uttered by Democratic lawmakers like Ilhan Omar and AOC. For years. And that's when they're not beating Dems over the head with blanket statements like "you support riots" or "you want to destroy America".
Books like this one have been bestsellers among the right for the last 20 years. Fox News has had a stable of popular hosts who strawman everyone left of Reagan to hell and gone every night of the week since the late 90s.
How could you possibly miss this?
And before Obama the W. administration and their mouthpieces on Fox News labelled everyone who opposed the Iraq war as traitors. Given that the anti-war crowd was overwhelmingly left of center, I think this was worse than anodyne comments from Obama about "playing politics".
And let's not ignore right-wing talk radio starting in the 90s either. Or conservative "thinkers" who wrote bestselling books like this.
>Why does everything need to be a fight and a dig
I'm going to be honest here. I've been interacting with conservatives on social media fora like this one for almost 10 years now and compared to what I've seen, everything you just read has been positively restrained. And ever since 9/11 I've seen vanishingly little good faith from conservatives. Judging by the authors and media personalities who conservatives support with their money, and the politicians who they support with their votes, the amount of easy comity and goodwill that I have for conservatives is just about gone. Now it takes work.
Look at this shit. Now look at it again. That's the most popular Republican president since Reagan, and his aggregate poll numbers among Republicans never dipped below around 85%. "The only good Democrat is a dead Democrat". That's an American president talking about half the voting age population. And was there any noticeable pushback from the right? Essentially none whatsoever. Signal boosting a genocidal death threat was met with a ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ by conservatives writ large.
I'm trying dude, otherwise I wouldn't be having this conversation.
Yes, recently a few people on the left have started imitating what the right solidified two decades ago; demonizing the other side and urging people that they can't be allowed to exist. I can see how getting a taste of your own medicine can be unsettling. It was much better when the left were the civil ones, wasn't it? I imagine you'd love to go back to a time when only your side cheated and lied. If I could, I would let you take back 40 years of right wing lying and scumbaggery so the left wouldn't feel driven to imitate them.
