www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007K8AA7I x2 (or wherever you can source em from)
Phillips screwdriver x1 (same size as the outside screws on the headlights)
That's it. Dielectric grease is included.
I did have some rusty / stripped headlight screws on the metal shroud that took an hour or so to get out (and almost didn't come out at all). I replaced all of them with 8 32x 3/4 stainless machine screws from Ace hardware.
Truck-lite LED lamps are a direct drop in replacement and are DOT street legal. http://www.amazon.com/Truck-Lite-27270C-Headlamp/dp/B007K8AA7I/
I put one of these in my 79 CB750:

Should fit any bike that takes a 7" round headlight. Original plug fit without any modification.

Beam pattern is good (not great), but it's significantly brighter than either the H4 retrofit I had tried before it. Overall it's worlds better than the stock headlight, and draws less power (may or may not matter depending on your bike's charging system). I've had it on for a couple years now and have been happy with it.
There are definitely less expensive options out there, but I wasn't confident in the quality of the beam pattern, or how long the lens would last before fogging/clouding, etc...
I just saw this a couple months ago and will be giving it a try for my 550. I use this currently on my bikes

that should get you on the right track, replace tires if they are shit, throttle cables if they are shit, check and inspect clutch cable, lube everything, rebuild and clean your carbs no matter what. replace the brake lines if they suck, there should be kits for those on 4into1 as well...once you find anything and everything you want to buy, just research other platforms for best prices.
outside of that stuff its gonna be all cosmetic and upgrades which i can point you in directions for that as well.
other websites I utilize are dimecitycycles.com

mostly to find nice one off products...then i search eBay and amazon.
It is one of these. It bolts right in on M2's, no modifications necessary.
i LOVE them. i got the truck-lites. nice and bright and have a nice clean beam, which made aiming them super easy. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007K8AA7I/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
My personal recommendation is to pick up one of these from Dime City Cycles then head to Amazon and grab a Truck-Lite LED or knockoff.
If that is a bit too spendy go for this one from Dime City Cycles that includes a lens and reflector and put in a good H4 bulb.
If you're up for some tinkering, I've seen a few SV650s with the headlight swapped for a Truck Lite 7" LED headlight: http://www.amazon.com/Truck-Lite-27270C-Headlamp/dp/B007K8AA7I
