Those are "lead cutters", meant to cut the thin/soft copper wire of electronic components. From the design, its clear that they are strong in the cutting direction but not strong at all in the perpendicular direction.
Since they are a cheap tool relatively speaking, many people use it for other purposes, like cutting zip ties. Although ties are relatively soft, people often use a pulling/twisting action to tighten the tie first before cutting, and that can spread the blades apart.
I used to have a pair for my electronics hobby but I use thicker, forged cutters for most purposes, including specialized ones like this one for zip ties:

There are lots of posts of this type of flush cutter getting broken, from all sorts of brands. The thing that unites all these posts: they broke when cutting plastic. Believe it or not, plastic's toughness is a big problem for stamped-steel flush cutters. They're intended for cutting copper wire.
There are styles of flush cutters intended for cutting plastic, not made of stamped steel. I suggest you replace with that type for your 3d printing kit, and also for anyone who uses these for the common task of cutting zip ties flush.
Here's a real good option, 3 size choices: https://smile.amazon.com/Tsunoda-KBN-150-Cable-Cutter-6-Inch/dp/B0756YR7XX
These are meant more for small electronics, try some flush cutting side cutters like these: https://www.amazon.ca/Tsunoda-KBN-150-Cable-Cutter-6-Inch/dp/B0756YR7XX?th=1&psc=1
Second on Tsunoda. I have this and its great. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0756YR7XX/

Dont pay that much, they must be low on stock or something i paid $24 cad.
Those are actually lead cutters, and used to cut off the thin soldered wires of electronic components. So ya, bulky plastic can twist them out of alignment as its only stamped sheet metal.
I know they are popular to use for cable ties because they are cheap but the proper tools are much better. Look for diagonal cutters designed for plastic, as they cut flush and have a thinner, sharper blade.
I have multiple plastic cutters and this one specific for cable ties, with an angled head and gripping area to pull the tag: https://www.amazon.com/Tsunoda-KBN-150-Cable-Cutter-6-Inch/dp/B0756YR7XX
