Yes the HFL is the Bluetooth unit. Just Acura and Hondas name for it. The USB/aux connections are separate from the HFL unit. I've seen people get the USB or aux Bluetooth adapters when their phone stops working with the HFL or if the HFL breaks and they don't want to replace it.
Edit: something like this https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HDO66NK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_2f-sFbEXKDSSN
You could try this: https://www.amazon.com/Firefly-Bluetooth-Receiver-Smallest-Streaming/dp/B01HDO66NK I used it with my car that had a usb port and an aux port. Works great and probably sounds fine. I never used it with speakers good enough to differentiate it.
All GM PDIMs are shit. The mylink bluetooth PDIM (and the Camaro PDIM) dies just as fast as the standard non-Bluetooth one that came with the green screen. I went through 3 non-Bluetooth ones in the 4 years I owned a Cruze.
Get a Tunai Firefly on Amazon. Plug it into the Aux and USB in your center console and forget about it. Bonus that you get a compartment light out of it too.
I have this Bluetooth adapter. It's a USB-powered receiver that has an ultra short 3.5mm plug on the other end. Plug USB adapter into 12v socket, plug receiver into adapter, and plug 3.5mm cable in right next to the USB. Switched 12v power means the receiver turns off and on with the car, and it connects in seconds every time. Absolutely love this.
hey op :) like what other people have said, the only phone compatible would be those old flip phones of some sort back in the day. unfortunately phones of the present aren’t compatible, at least not to my knowledge
if you wanna listen to your own music without having to buy an aftermarket head unit, get an aux cable like what that one user said. i own an ‘06 e350 and i’m currently using this aux. plug one end into the aux port in your glove box (assuming it’s in there) and plug the other end into the usb port you have there
the sounds are crispy clear and i like it a lot. the only problem i have with it is that sometimes the bluetooth doesn’t connect right away when i get in the car so i’d have to unplug and plug the usb end in again, but that’s like 15% of the times i get in
Not who you asked, but I Have this based on the recommendation of this sub from a few weeks ago.. it works great so far

There is an Bluetooth usb dongle that you can connect to a cig lighter and aux to the red and white connectors in ur center console and it turns on when u turn on the car and will automatically connect to ur phone. The link is below and never had any problems with. There are cheaper but this brand has never broken on me once.

Looks like it’s sold out, but it’s a Bluetooth receiver. I couldn’t get my iPhone 8 forward to work with the ISB directly. My 2013 iPod would with the BMW adapter though.
Here’s the new version of what I have:

Since it needs charge by USB I grabbed a lighter to 5-port USB hub thing.
You'd have to use a USB power adapter, but this little guy has support for Bluetooth audio codecs all the way up to LDAC. I use one in my car and its been solid.
A creature-comfort upgrade for the Legacy GT - Jazzyengineering Aux Mod!
it retains the factory head unit (which is required for the dual-climate control), and allows you to add an aux cable to the 6-cd changer!
Then I added one of these guys with an aux gender-bender and BAM! I have bluetooth music streaming!
I honestly think it's just shitty Bluetooth modules/receivers in vehicles. In my bmw X5 i have the same exact issue you are describing and in my bmw 3 series which has no Bluetooth for music, I use a tunai firefly and the pixel 6 pro works flawlessly with that. By the way that tunai firefly is a dope ass LDAC for cars check it out here. I'm going to buy a second one for my X5 since I can't get it to act right.

I have used the Tunai Firefly for couple of years on my 2010 Z4. Really happy with it, super small, plugs into usb port, auto connect when car starts, plugs and play. Had some rare instances when I had to initiate connection from the phone but otherwise really good experience

I don’t believe that the grom unit replaces the CD or aux port, but I ended up just taking out the CD player since I didn’t have a spot to put the vline module. I still use my stock bluetooth for calling because the included mic sucks for anything but siri. Not sure if you are an apple or android user but I’ve found that my iphone only connects to the vline and car bluetooth 4/5 times. if i turn the key to reset them though usually they both connect though. Before I bought the vline i used this bluetooth adapter for music and the stock bluetooth for calls. This worked pretty well and was much cheaper but I talked myself into the grom since I use my car to commute to school now and like having the maps on screen. Its also pretty nice to be able to skip songs with the steering wheel controls rather than searching for the skip button on my phone. Its also nice being able to use siri to send/ read texts handsfree. I do like having the grom but $650 is a pretty steep price tag especially if youre fine with using what you have now.
I had the exact same problem and bought a Tunai Firefly which solved it competely as far as I can tell. There's a little blue light on the end which is a little distracting, but well worth it for the ease of Bluetooth in my opinion. This is the model I bought:
There appear to be higher end versions of this style of adapter to fit your needs.
Here's one.

Seems as though you have already installed a USB input into the 12v socket? I imagine it’d work ok on any 12v USB plug? I bought a made in China BT receiver and it operates via a spare radio channel so yeah there is often some crackling interference which is bloody annoying given I have the standard Bose audio - the sound is so clear playing a CD. My Baseus CD mobile phone holder is ‘ok’ but upon decent acceleration it simply falls out. What’s good about the BT receiver is it’s wireless and I can answer calls and select next track etc from the unit and put the phone away - does the Firelfy hook into your steering wheel audio controls or you have to change songs on the phone?
Thank you. I saw something similar here https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HDO66NK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1DORQKJNB4ZYI&psc=1
I just wasnt sure how the dongles sound via AUX when compared to a unit that is wired directly to the sound system, or even a unit that would allow bluetooth streaming (wired to the sound system)
I specifically looked for one that didn't have it's own volume controls. You already have the phone volume, AUX input volume AND the stereo master volume that have to be balanced against each other to get the sound as clean as you can. Adding in a 4th volume variable just seemed like way too much hassle.
Other benefits are compact size, no need for separate USB cable for charging , and it autoconnects. Pretty good package.
I'm using one of the below units. If you have USB and an aux in, it's a great way to do it. I have found this unit pairs extremely quickly. Track steering wheel controls don't do anything but the volume ones work fine (as makes sense).

No because the SSS's USB seems to be for content only (unless someone else corrects me).
That BT unit is for computers and you will more than likely need extra drivers too - which your SSS will probably never have.
If you want to add BT to this SSS you need one that they have for cars where the USB is used for power but has a AUX/line out (and will connect to the line on your SSS). Pick a BT adapter to AUX that allows charging and playback at the same time and then plug it into the USB port to get power, and plug the line out into the line in on the SSS.
I would try this one as it seems it needs no charging => it's using power from the USB (https://www.amazon.com/Firefly-Bluetooth-Receiver-Smallest-Streaming/dp/B01HDO66NK/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=bluetooth+aux+car+usb&qid=1558748622&s=gateway&sr=8-3)
Im currently looking at this but itll be a while before i go home to get it. So i dont know how good it is but it claims to solve all my problems

If your USB is right next to your AUX, I'd highly recommend the Firefly (https://www.amazon.com/TUNAI-Firefly-Smallest-Bluetooth-Streaming/dp/B01HDO66NK). It's strictly audio, and lets you connect to that for audio and your car for calls. It's what I use in a 2013 Buick (probably a similar setup to yours) and it works beautifully. Then you can of course just use a normal USB-C car charger. Also, it's so small it just stays hidden in the center console and automatically connects whenever you start your car up.
I was in the same boat as you. I did a little research and bought this
It works beautifully! It streams music in really good quality from my iPhone but when I dial or receive a call the music interrupts automatically.
Here’s the few minor downsides:
Other than that it’s a pretty solid little device and I haven’t found anything better for the $
also get yourself a normal car charger for the cig lighter spot. Then you can charge, and play music, and the bluetooth will never need to be charged. It charges itself from the usb port. I did this myself, and its the best 35 i ever spent.
I'm using this TUNAI Firefly LDAC Bluetooth... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HDO66NK?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share and it's working pretty good
True enough 11
Although if you still want to switch to bluetooth I'd try this
Got one a few months ago and it's definitely the best dongle I've ever had
You don't have Bluetooth in this car.
Here's an accessory that might help TUNAI Firefly LDAC Récepteur Bluetooth : https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B01HDO66NK/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_i_dl_3AWYMHNKZM8N36Q4W1XT?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
looks like this in the glovebox
Turns on when you unlock the door and usually connects right up, only handles music, and doesn't have a mic... If you answer your phone it won't try to go through the stereo, which is exactly what I wanted.
This and you'll be happy forever. Love my music lossless etc..
I've heard good things about this and planned on installing one this summer. There's 200+ pages on the ctsv forums with people starting out skeptical to ending with people reading about how good it is.
Right now I'm using a simple device for streaming music as I'm not a fan of those add on or suction cup devices and this remains hidden in the center console

Yeah I know. The Audeze Mobius, Audeze Penrose and HyperX Cloud Orbit S use the exact same physical shell and headband with simple changes to the color scheme.
This is why the HyperX has the cracking issue. It's Audeze's fault due to how they designed those hinges.
The Mobius has more premium earpads by default, I think, but you can replace the HyperX pads with any pads made for Mobius anyway, so it's no problem. And either way, reviews for both of them say that their default earpads are pretty hot and that you may want aftermarket ones anyway.
And if you truly want Bluetooth, you could buy TUNAI Firefly LDAC which is a Sony LDAC (best Bluetooth audio codec) receiver which plugs directly into the 3.5mm port of the HyperX headphones. You'll also need a small USB-A female connector power cable to deliver power to the bluetooth receiver. Alternatively, there are bluetooth receivers that use batteries instead. This won't be as portable as having Bluetooth directly inside the headset, but it's all I'd ever need if I want to watch TV via the headset. But I don't think I'll add bluetooth at all.
So for me, the HyperX is a much better purchase. The Mobius has no benefits at all. Build quality is the same since they use the same plastic molds. And I can 99.999999% guarantee that HyperX buys the molded parts from Audeze/same manufacturer, since it's extremely expensive to set up your own molds and factory and tooling to make a new product design yourself.
Oh and I actually found one review that claimed that the reason for the "rattling" sound that some people get in one of their ears (sounds like a crumpling/rustling paperbag apparently), is that your ear touches against the speaker grille and damages the thin film on the inside. Not sure if that's true, but I will keep that in mind. This risk is small on all 3 headphones and it's been very rare to see reviews with this issue.
Anyway, I say all this because I am sure others will find this topic in the future.

Back to the four questions:

My car doesn't have Bluetooth for audio, just an aux in, and this has worked flawlessly with my 6. Just need a dual USB charger to run it and a charge cable.
I use this: https://www.amazon.com/Firefly-Bluetooth-Receiver-Smallest-Streaming/dp/B01HDO66NK/
Since my phone already has Google Assistant, I didn't need all the extra stuff from Amazon. Works great so far ;)
I have this one.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HDO66NK
Plugged into this phone charger.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088CYWT5H/
I was a little worried that it wouldn't fit in the center console without hitting the lid, but it works good.

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HDO66NK?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details works very well, the nicer Bluetooth format too. if you have the aux in, you can plug this into the auxin and then power as you would accordingly.
I stream from my phone to my second car. This bluetooth receiver works like a charm! I also bought an on/off switch so the battery doesn't drain.
The Tunai Firefly is what I use in mine and it's amazing. The sound quality is better then the aux I was using.
Yup! This is the one I had. You also need to plug it into a battery source like a cigarette lighter or similar.
In that case, buy a Bluetooth receiver. Most have a single, 3.5mm male connector. You can get an adapter that goes from the 3.5mm to red/white RCA. Connect the receiver to your phone, switch to AUX on the stereo, and play some music. I have the iPod connector and discovered the CarPRO adapter but before that, I used this:
3.5mm/RCA adapter (lots of variations or other choices too)
If you get ground noise (a constant 'hum' sound during silent periods, i.e. between songs), something like this solves that: Ground loop isolator
This one works great. Calls go through the car's built in receiver and the music will go through this Bluetooth adapter.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HDO66NK/ref=cm_sw_r_other_apa_i_cjVhFbTTQ9WGR
Had the same frustration on my 228i. Bluetooth for calls but not able to stream.
I picked up a simple Bluetooth receiver and connected it to my aux input while the USB port just provides power. It's simple and clean, ends up looking like this.
You can find them on Amazon for about $20-$40.
I use this
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HDO66NK/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and it's plugged into the power port in the center console (don't know what your vehicle has, sorry). The 3.5mm connects to this
https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00B2HP1FY/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1
(these are common and fairly 'generic', so any 3.5mm-to-RCA-audio will work). ALL audio control must be done via the phone though but the phone is outputting via Bluetooth and can be located wherever you want.
I tried using the built-in iPod connector to a 30-pin-to-Lightning adapter and I didn't like having the cord connected to the phone. I have an iOttie mount that holds my phone and it's located at the far-left side of the windshield so a cord connection would be ugly.
Want a cleaner setup ? Get this Bluetooth receiver that connects to the AUX inputs (with an add'l 3.5mm-to-RCA cable).
