We had this happen at Kay's when we went shopping for rings last year. They took my husband's information for a "membership" and we were clear we didn't want credit. They said no worries, this is just for a membership. We were super off-put by it, especially when they started asking for his income and saying that his company didn't exist (he works for a fairly small company ~100 people). We got home from visiting our in-laws, and had a letter in our mailbox. It was along the lines of "We're sorry, but we cannot offer you a line of credit." We didn't want a line of credit, or a membership for that matter. We called them and they almost lazily explained to us that that's just what they do, try again later.
We ended up buying simple rings on Amazon for like $75 total instead and they're very beautiful. My husband and I both suffer from ADHD, so we wanted low-maintenance rings. So far they have held up, especially my husband's rings. Mine have some wear on them but that's because they're plated and I have two of them, so they are constantly rubbing on each other. But they are Tungsten Carbide, they're not like, tin or anything.
My suggestion, if you're down for it, it go through Amazon. There's good quality stuff on there. They do have diamonds and whatnot, I just didn't grab any for myself cause I don't do diamonds. But in general realize you have other options besides big-name jewelry stores. In several of the big cities I regularly visit there are family-business sized jewelers who are even willing to create a ring for you.
