The turtle beach px22 is what I used and haven't had any problems in the 3 years I've had it except for the headphone jack connector breaking, but I was able to fix that myself for about $5. Great sound and it comes with an amplifier to customize the bass and treble. Currently $50 USD on amazon. Not really sure what the conversion is on that. https://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Beach-Universal-Amplified-Gaming-Headset/dp/B00E5UHSYW/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1477327201&sr=8-2&keywords=turtle+beach+px22
How much are you looking to spend? Really anything will be a nice upgrade from standalone speakers. I'm using a cheap Turtle Beach PX22 headset for the PC. 3 years old still works no problem. I'm able to pinpoint locations easily, even if they are above or below me! A massive advantage.
I'm sure someone will hop on and bash Turtle Beach and that's fine, I have had crappy sets from them as well. However... I have Nothing but good things to say about the PX22. :) I hope this helps!

I bought the mlg px22. Love the quality and reliability for the price. I also like the sturdiness of them and the break away cord. However they are a bit heavy for longer gaming sessions 4-6 hrs.... for 50 bucks i would buy again 10/10 because of cross platform. I think most of it is in a joking manner, I've always done it in a joking and excited manner. Everyone there is really helpful. That said, right now I'm using a 5.1 Speaker system and I'm also rocking a http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00E5UHSYW?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00
I originally bought the PX4 wireless headset from Turtle Beach and had problems with the quality of sound and features. I could have been doing something wrong or the headphones might have been damaged but in any case I returned them and purchased the PX22 wired headset and they work great. They come in at 80$ and can be found at gamestop, bestbuy, amazon (has them for 60$). The sound quality is great for the price and the bass, treble, and volume of chat and game sound can all be adjusted by an in-line amp. http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Amplified-Universal-Headset-Playstation-3/dp/B00E5UHSYW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1389026915&sr=8-1&keywords=px22+turtle+beach They fall in the low range for price and features but get the job done all the same.
I have a pair of turtle beach headphones that I use. It comes with the usb to audio line port adapter. From there you plug in the actual headset. Another option would be to plug in an aux cable to the adapter which could then send sound to speakers or even the microphone port of your computer. (I use this method whenever I play through my computer speakers)

I run with Turtlebeach Px22 and they have been great for the past 2 years for me. I enjoy the quick controls for my mic/feedback noises.
If you want comfortable headphones with awesome sound I'd recommend these
