I’m a little late. There’s plenty of good advice already posted. But take a look at these:
American Diabetes Association’s Type 2 Diabetes – Your Healthy Living Guide.
This is what I would call the Diabetes for Dummies handbook. It’s all basic advice. It works well for both the patient and the partner. It’s not long, half sized, about 180 pages. I found a used copy on the shelf at Goodwill. Don’t worry if it’s not the current edition; the core information is still accurate. Try the library if have one.

And
Both by Lara Rondinelli-Hamiliton and Jennifer Bucko Lamplough
Here’s why: Both of these had to be approved and tested by the American Diabetes Association prior to publication. Lara Hamilton is a Diabetic Educator for DuPage Medical Group in Chicago; Jennifer Lamplough is Senior Director of Strategy at Northern Illinois Food Bank and a certified chef; both Lara and Jennifer have known each other since college.
Now, tongue-in-cheek comment:
I call Diabetes (T2) the White Diet. You shouldn’t eat anything white in color. No bread. No Rice. No potatoes. No milk. No pasta. No ice cream. No sugar.
