Disclaimer: I’m a co-author of the “Unlearning migraine” book
Pain is something the brain projects on consciousness after evaluating danger. Just as we get thirsty or hungry, pain is a perception, it’s the brain telling us to behave in a certain way. Brain makes us thirsty -> go drink water, brain makes us hungry -> go eat something, brain projects pain somewhere -> this area needs protection. The brain is just a processor of information, it produces outputs (for example, pain) given some inputs. The time it processes the most is at night, when we leave it alone, so it’s very usual to wake up with migraines. You can learn more about this in the book “Unlearning migraine” by neurologist Arturo Goicoechea (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VLWKJKR).
I don’t know if you’ve heard of Dr. Arturo Goicoechea. He’s a “different” neurologist. He’s now retired, but many years ago, he got frustrated because giving the prescriptions he’d been taught at university wasn’t really solving anything for migraine patients. They were just like “but how can I be in so much pain if nothing is wrong inside my head?”. He always says that the first thing a doctor should do is BELIEVE what the patient is saying. Migraines are real and they hurt as hell.
So he was getting frustrated because the official remedies weren’t working and because their patients wanted answers. He started waking up at 4am to read scientific papers about biology, neuroscience, etc to understand how pain works. Once he had figured out how migraines work, he started explaining it to his patients. Amazingly, those patients came back after a couple months saying that their migraines were gone. Dr. Arturo Goicoechea was amazed that managing pain was so simple. No pills needed, just information. So he started treating patients as students, explaining concepts to them. It has been working wonderfully for around 20 years already! Now they’ve published a journal paper about it: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/primary-health-care-research-and-development/article/effectiveness-of-a-primary-carebased-group-educational-intervention-in-the-management-of-patients-with-migraine-a-randomized-controlled-trial/1AE7841B29F6...
To bring his teachings to a broader audience, he wrote a book, “Unlearning migraine”. It’s the only thing he has in English. It’s on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VLWKJKR On the Spanish version, “Desaprender la migraña”, you can read many reviews saying how a book that can be read in 2h completely changed their lives. I’d say you give it a try, it’s just a book :) good luck!!
A good complement to all this can be the book “Unlearning migraine” from neurologist Arturo Goicoechea: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VLWKJKR
I’m so sorry you’re going through this. Migraine affects so many and you are misunderstood, people just don’t believe in how much pain you are :(
Have you tried Dr Arturo Goicoechea’s method (neurologist)? I’ve known people that had daily migraines for entire years that got so much better just by reading his book “Unlearning migraine” (yup, just reading a book, you have nothing to lose). It’s based on pain neuroscience pedagogy, they recently published a journal paper on it: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/primary-health-care-research-and-development/article/effectiveness-of-a-primary-carebased-group-educational-intervention-in-the-management-of-patients-with-migraine-a-randomized-controlled-trial/1AE7841B29F6...
The book is on Amazon, I’d say you give it a try: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VLWKJKR It’s nice to finally understand how migraines work, and the least that will happen is that you lose fear. Good luck!
Although it may sound weird, a lot of people are finding their migraines are heavily reduced by learning how migraines actually work (from a neuroscience and biological perspective). Here’s the proof (scientific journal paper): https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/primary-health-care-research-and-development/article/effectiveness-of-a-primary-carebased-group-educational-intervention-in-the-management-of-patients-with-migraine-a-randomized-controlled-trial/1AE7841B29F6...
Unfortunately, the book they refer to on the study is only in Spanish, but there’s a newer book by the same author that just got published in English, “Unlearning migraine”. It’s on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VLWKJKR there can’t be a more natural remedy than reading a book! And at least, you’ll find answers to why it hurts. I hope it helps :)
This is the most fitting question I’ve ever found for what I’m about to say! Don’t know if you’ve heard of Dr. Goicoechea. He’s a neurologist who dedicated his whole life to treating migraines. He’s written several books on it and the last one was translated to English (by me, her daughter), so we can finally recommend it to English speakers. In Spain it’s being a complete success and change of paradigm on how migraines should be treated. Summary: when patients learn how migraines work (their science), they get rid of them, or are at least significantly less invalidating and intense. This might sound nuts, or that he’s a shaman or a wizard, but people are really getting better (here’s the scientific journal paper that proves that his method works: https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/primary-health-care-research-and-development/article/effectiveness-of-a-primary-carebased-group-educational-intervention-in-the-management-of-patients-with-migraine-a-randomized-controlled-trial/1AE7841B29F6...). Anyway, the last book he wrote takes an afternoon to read, it’s super easy and people are reporting that their migraines are going away just by reading it. So it sounds ideal for bookworms like you :). Try, it’s just a book! Here it is (“Unlearning migraine”): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07VLWKJKR I hope it works for you.
