Have you looked into extending your chain link fence higher? I actually researched this today because I have a need for a higher chain link fence, but I don't want to remove the posts. You could increase the height of your existing posts with post extenders or put a larger post over the existing post, put up new chain link and you'd probably only be out a few hundred dollars. Also, you could add the privacy screening slats to make it more of a privacy fence. And I agree that you should lock your gate.
