There's a lot of resources out there that backs up the claim that homework is a great indicator of high-achieving mastery levels of content at the secondary levels (not so much at elementary levels). It goes hand-in-hand with Dweck's growth mindset. I have a bunch of articles that I've cited in previous academic papers pertaining to that, but many of them are behind university paywalls unfortunately. Though, I was able to track down this article and this book which discuss the question in great detail of what indicators leads to high-levels of mastery.
