I had mined installed by u/HTXdashcams. Great guy and super careful with my new car. He can install only or sell you the cam and install. I had already bought my cam before I found him but it would have been a bit cheaper to buy direct from him if I had that option.
THIS is the one I use. It is hardwired to the car's fuse box and battery.
I have the Viofo A119 V3, I've had it for a year now and I love it! Great quality video, and easy to pull videos off with micro SD card. I haven't had any issues with it yet.
Not shilling, and I’m sure someone will comment “wel akshually that one isn’t very good”, but I was in the same spot as you and eventually bought https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=aukey+dash+cam&qid=1625058775&sr=8-3
Just get the right memory card and mount it. Ez pz
Its the viofo a119 v3 with their glare filter and hardwire kit. I like the quality and the parking mode recording is nice with the wiring kit. Sometimes I wish I got one with a rear cam like the a129 duo.
Mine is out of production - a 4-year old TaoTronics TT-CD06-N. It works OK, though you'd be hard-pressed to read license plates unless you the other car was < 20 feet in front of you.
Nowadays the VIOFO A119 V3 dash cam is supposedly pretty good, with 4.6/5 score out of 1552 ratings on Amazon, Fakespot grade B: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/
^ r/Dashcam also lists that model among their other best value cameras on the right sidebar. The less-expensive Blueskysea B1W doesn't seem to be available on Amazon at the moment, but I do see some sellers on eBay w/ 99.0%+ feedback ratings have it.
Though the dashcam video could save this driver too right? That's the reason I am shopping for one but the choices are overwhelming. Is the A119 V3 still a good choice? I've seen that recommended a lot.
I just got the Viofo A119 v3 and really like it, not too expensive and records in 1600p. The parking option is what I really like, motion detection recording and g sensor where it saves 15 seconds before detection and 30 seconds after so it get everything that happened, not just video of someone driving away.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_I33fFbW8WJ85M
Anyone know of a good dashcam?? Not too expensive but won't shit out on me.
EDIT: Okay I was just made aware of the recommendations sticky thread. Also seems a lot of people on Reddit like the A119 V3 so that's what I'll probably go with.
I've been rocking some Aukey branded dash cam for four years. I'd link it, but the listing is gone.
It very much resembles this one, but didn't have GPS. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_J2FKPAYEPBCDT0JSPAK4
Like others have said, getting one with a capacitor rather than Lithium Ion battery is key to lasting through the heat.
I got this one back in November. So far so good. I'd highly recommend getting one that uses a capacitor rather than a battery. I'm sure regular batteries would have blown up during the heat wave.
There are probably ways to route the wire around your car (I.e. By removing pieces of trim and hiding the cable) so it's not visible. But you're not going to be able to get an entirely wireless one.
I got this one. They make a back camera version too but figured if someone hit me from behind then they’re liable.
VIOFO A119 V3 2K Dash Cam 2560x1440P Quad HD+ Car Dash Camera, Ultra Clear Night Vision, 140-Degree Wide Angle, GPS Included, Buffered Parking Mode, True HDR, Motion Detection, G-Sensor, Time Lapse https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7
First rule of dashcam club. Don’t let anyone know you have one until you’re absolutely sure you’re not at fault. Don’t tell cops, insurance, other drivers...
I feel like I've seen some videos on here that it definitely didn't look like the person with the dashcam stopped to give them their contact info. Honestly, it can mean the difference between 1000's of dollars if the other person lies.
For that reason, I am shopping for one but the choices are overwhelming. Is the A119 V3 still a good choice? I've seen that recommended a lot.
What kind of dashcams do police cruisers use? Cause they are in major need of an update.
I am planning on getting one myself. Is the A119 v3 still a top contender or should I look into a Garmin or something completely different?
Frankly this is why dashcams are needed. If the driver hit the cyclist, what could he say to absolve himself of any wrong doing?
Seems a lot of people on Reddit like the A119 V3 so that's what I'll probably go with.
I'll save you the research. This is the best dash cam on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRQH4R7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1
$99, 1440p instead of 1080 so you can read more license plates, has good night vision and a capacitor so it won't blow up in your 150 degree car in the summer.
I did some research and this is the best one I found.
> I am taking recommendations for an inexpensive dash cam.
Lots of people on the dashcams subreddit recommended it. I have to agree its way better than the last few dashcams I've had. Cheap. Good picture. Easy to use.
Looks like it's on sale for Prime Day too!
I picked up this one the other week as it was on sale, and it has done pretty well for me so far. But I'd check out r/dashcam as they will have some recommendations in their sidebar to checkout depending on price point.
I mainly have experience with this A119 V3 and can totally recommend it. I've had it since it came out 2 years ago and I've had to pull footage from it twice. Both times went great. This is compared to a cheapo dashcam that I had before that would randomly not save footage.
Not sure about the others but I'd totally buy another A119 V3 in the future. Hope this helps.
Getting a dashcam is good advice but $250 is almost twice what you need.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_i_77P2WC1FW8R56H29A5MH
I've had an older version of this dashcam for years with no issues. Whatever brand you get, just find something that uses capacitors instead of batteries unless you never park in the sun. Summer heat will cook your dashcam batteries and kill them quickly.
The Viofo A119 V3 is $120 on Amazon. I have the V1, which is almost identical but with slightly lower video quality (same resolution though).
I have yet to get in a collision since getting the camera, but I know I've got my ass covered if I do. The rare times I am without a functioning camera (like when I leave my microSD card inside) I feel vulnerable.
Consider it a form of insurance, but with only a one-time premium. That premium is a fraction of the money you would lose if you were to be wrongly found at-fault in a collision. It could also protect you in case you are wrongly arrested or otherwise have your rights violated by law enforcement, or if you are the victim road-rage.
My point is that dashcams are an investment. It's easy to keep putting off getting one, since they may seem unnecessary and frivolous. If that's what's holding you back, ask yourself this: If your insurance policy had an optional service, for a one-time fee of $120, where your adjuster agreed to investigate your claims so thoroughly that you would never be wrongly found at-fault, would you take that offer?
This is a good question for /r/dashcam as well.
I'd recommend the Viofo A119 v3, as it has very good video quality and is $120. I have the v2 version that I've been using a couple of years, and love it. It beeps constantly to alert you if it's not recording for some reason (no memory card, corrupted memory card, etc), as long as it's powered on.
Lottery tickets first, because then with the winnings he could buy some nice pants.
Can anyone recommend a good dashcam? Looking at this A119 if it's still a good option or should I go with something else?
As another user posted in a thread, don't go with cheap cams because you'll have date issues and potentially failures. I'd go with the A119 V3 which is really well known around here on Reddit and the GPS module always keep the date spot on. Also, video quality is great in day and night. Just my two cents
I'd say front cams are the way to go. How does the VAVA compare to the A119 V3? The A119 is like one of the most popular cams on reddit at least.
https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-Enhanced-Vision-Starvis-Parking/dp/B07SRQH4R7 If you want a basic robust cam this is a pretty decent one for its price.
The screen is only used for setup and positioning basically, though it can be used to review clips. video is saved from ignition ON to ignition OFF. Older clips get deleted as the sd card gets full. It records in 2k and has very good night quality.
I would not personally bother getting the GPS or polarizing lens add on. They have versions with wifi but honestly when you first get a dashcam you want to record and share everything. After you realize what a daily occurence idiot drivers are you will get over it.
I had the older version and it did not hiccup even being in 110-160F heat of the desert.
Youtube search some reviews on it to see what you think.
Most have suction cup mounts but some have adhesive mounts like this one which is a little more of a hassle. Not a huge deal but they should prob stick to suction cup mounted cams
VIOFO A119 V3, although it does not have Wifi compatibility (other VIOFO dash cams do though, there’s also a VIOFO app in the app store). You have to connect the camera to your computer using the small USB cord they provide.
However, the quality is very good! I capped it at 1080P because that’s all I need but it goes up to 4k. Definitely the best camera if you want bang for buck, license plates are incredibly easy to read as well. Reddit decreases the quality dramatically, though; it definitely looks better than this.
I also recommend getting the GPS Module, it records speed and location. Link: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-Enhanced-Vision-Starvis-Parking/dp/B07SRQH4R7 (it’s at 79.99 for the next 30 minutes, then back to 99$ until Dec 13)
Overall an 8.5 or a 9
Absolutely. Here’s an excellent example: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-Enhanced-Vision-Starvis-Parking/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=sr_1_4?crid=2TMD512MP1AEL&keywords=Dashcam&qid=1669907541&sprefix=dashcam%2Caps%2C248&sr=8-4
Lightning Deal today — great price. I own this dashcam and it’s been flawless.
I've had the A119 V3 for some time and it is very reasonably priced right now.
I hope your sister is ok.
It’s important to protect yourself in these situations. People are the worst.
Get a dash cam.
VIOFO A119 V3 is my recommendation. I’ve been running A119s for a few years since the v1.
I prefer to run two of the single camera setups versus a dual camera option.
You can get a higher resolution camera on the rear that way. Also each camera will have its own SD card and power connection, which can help with redundancy if a camera is damaged during a crash.
Out if the four I’ve bought for myself and family, the only failure I have had was with a GPS module. Unfortunately the GPS module for the A119 isn’t designed very well and it’s prone to issues over time. I now prefer to run mine without GPS.

There are deals, but I wouldn't say they are crazy good. Usually like $10 off max. Similar to this A119 V3 deal right now, but is more than "good enough" for most people. I'd probably just hop on it if you're interested.
I live in Florida, so I got my windows tinted to provide heat and UV protection. All weather mats too. And I recommend a dashcam if you don't have one. I got this one and am happy with it:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_9NXB2MBA0CQ5NQA1ZHTK?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 This is the one I got. I’ve had it for about a month and haven’t had any issues. It has great reviews and the install is pretty easy. Keep in mind you do have to buy an micro SD card for it to work. It’s great for the price though.
If you do the currency conversion you'll see a few of the best value cams are in the price range listed https://www.amazon.ca/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=sr_1_7?crid=2DJLCEKVS1386&keywords=viofo+119&qid=1661275074&sprefix=viofo+119%2Caps%2C124&sr=8-7
My Viofo A119 v3 recorded this video. I’ve had many dash cams over the past 7-8 years and did a buttload of research before landing on a prior Viofo model a few years ago that preceded the v3. It’s hands down the best quality video you can find in a quality, reliable, inexpensive camera. Best $100 you can spend IMO.
I have a Viofo A119
https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-Enhanced-Vision-Starvis-Parking/dp/B07SRQH4R7
It should work for your Honda and maybe your Toyota if you have a 12V power source. I drive a 2014 Acura TL and I just plug it into a USB port and you have to buy the micro SD card separate
I use a Viofo a119, it is 1440p60fps. I have it hardwired in and the viofo kit has an adjustable limiter for your 12v. I have it set to 12.2v so it stops and doesn't kill my battery. Though the parking mode I use (they have many different settings) is motion activated. It's tiny and literally invisible with it sitting behind my rearview mirror. My plans are actually to move this one to the rear and buy the Pro version to have the option to connect to my phone. I did a bunch of research before buying, most feedback came back as this one being best. Highly recommend.

I'm in Dallas and have had my Viofo A119 for 4 years (Christmas will be 5 years) and it still works great. A key to having one that survives the Texas heat is getting one that has a capacitor as a an internal power supply instead of a battery.
My 1st dashcam had a lithium battery and it barely lasted 2 years.
I’ve been using this for about two years and it works great. It comes recommended in the r/dashcam sub, which is why I got it. If you want a rear camera too then it also comes in duel channel.
I had Best Buy instal it and they did a great job. I don’t know if all of them do, but the one at Polaris has a radio and cam instal department at the back.
It's a Street Guardian SG9665GC, I bought it from amazon a few years ago. I installed it myself using a hardwire kit that cost about $20.
The one I have isn't sold anymore but the Viofo 129 is a good value.
A lot depends on your requirements. Front & rear? Parking? I use a Viofo A119 v3 w/ a Dongar mirror tap as I don’t need parking & just have one in front. The eyesight isn’t as restrictive as Subaru claims, mine is right behind the mirror on the driver’s side = no issues. Subaruoutback.org has a ton of info on the topic.
VIOFO A119 V3 1440P 60fps Dash Cam with GPS, Enhanced Super Night Vision with HDR and Starvis Sensor, 140° Wide Angle, 2.0‘’ LCD, www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_6NKJ24N1760KWWMV0YRH?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
My dashcam isn't even wired up for parking mode, and I'm not concerned about theft.
The reason I got mine, is because accidents can happen at any time without warning. Even if you're a perfect driver, you could be passing by an idiot who's looking at their phone, they slowly steer into your lane, and crash! A dashcam will be able to prove that you maintained your lane, and the other driver caused it.
I always tell anyone who's not sure about getting one, to get a cheap $20 dashcam from Walmart. That's what I started with years ago, and just recently upgraded to the A119 for about $100. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7
I have the Viofo A119 v3 and have used this brand for about 5 years and have not had any issues. The quality is great! Right now, it’s about $85 with the coupon via Amazon … Check it out on YouTube, also. VIOFO A119 V3 1440P 60fps Dash Cam with GPS, Enhanced Super Night Vision with HDR and Starvis Sensor, 140° Wide Angle, 2.0‘’ LCD, Smart Parking Mode 24H https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MSY1JW7F072SXA7RQTF1
I use a VIOFO A119 V3 and I love it. It has fantastic video quality for the price.
If you want to catch door dings, you may want to look for a multiple camera system (front, back and inside). Most affordable cameras are single camera setups and don't show what's happening behind or next to you. Just be prepared to spend at least $200+ for one of those.
I have a Viofo A119 in each of my two vehicles. It’s a decent unit. I got them on EBay for $80 US as I have a mailbox in Blaine.
I've had this one (but the V2 version) in my car since 2017. I had the V1 in my car as far back as 2014, but it broke and the company sent me a V2 free of charge. My wife has the dual camera A129, I'm still a little jury out if the rear is absolutely necessary, but it isn't hurting anything.
https://www.amazon.ca/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/
We've both used it now, she was minorly involved in a pretty bad accident last year and the police used it to determine fault on the other driver who ran a light but was trying to blame it on the other car that he slammed into before he ricocheted into my wife. I used mine to determine fault when the garage door to the parking garage in our old condo fell out of the rails after opening and smashed onto my car (the building was trying to blame me for driving through the door).
Definitely a useful investment. Plus you capture all sorts of other entertaining stuff.
Stupid Reddit app keeps covering it up but finally made it out, says A119 so I’m guessing this one? It is nice picture quality for the price , now I’m considering it ;)
Is this the one? VIOFO A119 V3 Dash Cam GPS, True HDR, 2880x2160P Quad HD+ Dashcam Car Camera, Super Night Vision, 140° Wide Angle, Motion Detection, G-Sensor, Time Lapse, Loop Record, Parking Mode 24h https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_i_Y8ZEWSTB1M657S2VAMK3?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
They have a 4K version too for a lot more, but I’m 100% satisfied with the 1920x1080.
Sure. I have the VIOFO A119 V3 Dashcam. It has 2K, GPS, True HDR, Buffered Parking Mode 24h, 2880x2160P 30fps Quad HD+ Car Dash Camera, Super Night Vision, 140° Wide Angle, Motion Detection, G-Sensor, Time Lapse, and Loop Recording.
I have only had it up for a few days, and this is my first time needing to grab footage, but it's fairly user friendly. You can lock footage so it doesn't write over it, and I really like the motion detection/parking mode that it has, because I have to park on the street or in crowded places a lot, and my car has gotten minor hits/bumps before when I wasn't around.
I can't really say much more about it at this point, but I got it based off the dashcam subreddit's list of cams they recommend. So it you're willing/able to spend more than $100 you could head over there and check out their recommendations.
I still need to get a rear cam, and after this I'm highly motivated. So if anyone has a recommendation for something affordable, feel free to drop it in a comment.
VIOFO A119 V3. Pretty happy with it overall. Running it at 2560x1440 60FPS. It does reset settings by itself once and a while for me, so have to keep an eye on that, since default resolution is 2560x1440 30FPS.
In my car I have a Yi branded one and I loved it at first but overtime the battery started to fail and I have to constantly reset the date.
My wife has the Viofo A119 which has a capacitor instead of a battery so she doesn’t have that problem. Plus it has a GPS function to indicate where and how fast she is traveling and it will pull the time and date from GPS. It’s a bit more money but worth it in my book. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/
Sure! To be honest, it depends on what's important to you. Do you want it to have a built-in screen, ability to connect to your phone, front AND rear, 4k vs 1080p to capture license plates better, etc.
The one MUST-have feature, it needs to be capacitor driven and not battery. The batteries can't survive AZ heat. Personally, I've been using the VIOFO A119 for three years without a single issue. It isn't fancy, but gets the job done.
I got this.
2020 Forester with Eyesight. I put it behind the rear view mirror and Eyesight is unaffected.
Lots of videos on Youtube on how to hide the cord behind the top of the car and down the A pillar.
Viofo A119 mounted to the windshield above my mirror. Had it for 20 months.
Legal? ND 39-21-39 1) specifies "An individual may not drive any motor vehicle with any sign, poster, or other nontransparent material upon the front windshield, side wings, or side or rear windows which obstructs the driver's clear view of the highway or any intersecting highway." A dash cam mounted to the windshield above and in front of a rear view mirror doesn't obstruct clear view of the highway.

I just got my second A119 V3. It's 79.92 on amazon. I got my oher one last year for 119. And even the black friday sale at viofo has it for 89 currently.
I am a bit confused too,. I ordered it from Amazon and it is listed as 60FPS while on Viofo’s site it is listed as 30fps. The reason I ordered from amazon is so I can do free return incase it doesn’t support 60FPS at 2K res.
Here is excerpt from Amazon
“Support 21:9 2560*1080P 60fps A119 V3 supports ultrawide 21:9 2560x1080P 60/30fps resolution, when you use a larger monitor to playback the video, it could give you lots of horizontal screen real estate. Bring you excellent widescreen experience.”
I just bought the Vifo A119x3 on Amazon. It’s only front facing, but I don’t see the need for a rear camera driving truck (unless he drives a lot without a trailer). It was $116 CAD + $10 shipping, on sale today for Black Friday.
Don’t worry, this is totally the place to ask about dash cams.
https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07SRQH4R7?psc=1&smid=AQXDPQN3LTP6G&ref_=chk_typ_imgToDp
You linked the wrong VIOFO A119 V3. The one I’m this link is sold by Amazon and on sale for Black Friday! VIOFO A119 V3
I know the A119 V3 for sure does that.. I have it hardwired now but for the first year it was plugged into my cigarette lighter port or usb port. I will say it's pretty easy to tuck in the cable to the liner to make it look nice and do recommend that.
I've used a Viofo A119 V2 for a number of years now and it's held up great. I park outside and even during last year's big cold snap, it functioned perfectly.
Just get the Viofo A119 from Amazon (pick your version, with or without GPS or a polarized lens filter). Simple, works, relatively cheap ($160). Basically the big thing is that you need a capacitor-based one (like the A119) instead of a battery-powered one, because of our cold climate. If you want detailed reviews or info about them, just head over to dashcamtalk.
I got the Viofo A119 great little cam https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7
But as for using a GoPro, dunno if those are really set up for loop recording, like when the card gets full if it starts overwriting the oldest stuff. Plus no GPS and speed info
Someone is bound to ask for one, here is my recommendation if you are on a budget.
VIOFO A119 v3 https://www.amazon.ca/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/
Basic 2 minute Installation - peel the sticky pad off the back, push onto your front windshield behind rearview mirror for 30 seconds. Attach cord to dashcam, plug other side into power outlet/cigarette lighter.
5 minute installation - same as above, but run the super long power cord along the top of your windshield, tucking into the roof liner, down the A frame (tuck in there, underneath and behind glove box, and back around to power outlet.
expert installation - get someone to hardwire it into the car for you. You can do this after running with 2 minute / 5 minute set-up for a while.
This one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_apanp_VW1tNzHKAUqtq
When I bought it last year it was one of the best bang for your buck that I found. Maybe things have changed since then and there are better ones out there for cheaper.
Has been working really good with no issues and I have it hardwired to the fuse box and hid the cables under the trim and the A pilar, it was very easy to do. You can also just use the cigarette lighter plug but it will be messy.
This is what I got. Install was super easy, maybe 15 minutes? I sort of tucked in the extra cable in the panels and it worked out really well.
If you don't already have a dashcam installed in your car now would be an excellent time to do it. The V2 Model is the current one I'm using and love the insurance it provides.
Stay safe out there folks!
I'm not an American, so I can't really comment on the legal or societal stuff.
Any dash cam is better than no dash cam. At the very least, even if the video quality is shit, it'll show that you were following traffic laws, not being reckless, and shift the liability to the other driver.
It also gives you an opportunity to reflect on your mistakes and improve your driving. A car blasting its horn at you is not a lot of information, but you can review the event on a video recording for things that you missed.
Plus you get internet points for posting funny videos.
The Viofo A119 V3 is one of the most popular budget cams. Very reasonable price for the quality and features.
VIOFO A119 V3 2K Dash Cam 2560x1440P Quad HD+ Car Dash Camera, Ultra Clear Night Vision, 140-Degree Wide Angle, GPS Included, Buffered Parking Mode, True HDR, Motion Detection, G-Sensor, Time Lapse https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_ZJQ7M4FNXZSQKSF2EB5K?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
I got into an accident last month. After years of thinking the same thing, researching and then giving up, I finally just did it after that "nudge" I needed.
VIOFO A119 V3 2K Dash Cam... https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
If you also have analysis paralysis, just get this one. It seems a great "intro" that you can use as long as you want. I actually put them in both my cars, and now I feel so much better.
Any decent quality auto radio installation shop can install it, so call around. If you buy a cam from them you'll be paying a markup, I recommend getting one off Amazon. See /r/Dashcam's sidebar for recommendations in various price ranges. The Viofo A119 seems to be really popular, currently it's $99 on Amazon. To get up and running right away you can use a USB cigarette lighter adapter if your car doesn't have any USB ports built in, and tuck the wire in around the edge of your interior trim panels. A hard installation simply connects to the fuse panel.
I use a Viofo A119 V3 on mine. Easy to install and operate and captures really good video at night. You can also consult the good people at /r/dashcam and they can point you to some other good options.
I just got the viofo a119 v3 which was highly recommended here. VIOFO A119 V3 2K Dash Cam 2560x1440P Quad HD+ Car Dash Camera, Ultra Clear Night Vision, 140-Degree Wide Angle, GPS Included, Buffered Parking Mode, True HDR, Motion Detection, G-Sensor, Time Lapse https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_DZTWTWXBEFXZHEHJE87Q?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Holy shit that is expensive. I got the viofo a119 for like $120 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_8WH73EMFXHKZAVG5CAP8?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
The a129 will send vids to your phone.
It's not 4k, but the video is super smooth and crystal clear. No problem reading plates and even at night the vids are great.
viofo a119v3 ($142.90) from amazon, mine got delivered the day after i ordered (local stock i guess), installation is easy if you dont need it hardwired
depends on your budget though, there are plenty of other good ones that are cheaper or more expensive than this
I bought this VIOFO A119 V3 2K Dash Cam 2560x1440P Quad HD+ Car Dash Camera, Ultra Clear Night Vision, 140-Degree Wide Angle, GPS Included, Buffered Parking Mode, True HDR, Motion Detection, G-Sensor, Time Lapse https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_M69YYHM8N635774N1NH2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 Quick install and doesn’t stick out too much. /R/dashcam said good things about it. Luckily I haven’t had to use it yet
Hands down the most worth it is the A119 V3. I've had mine for 3 years now and it's been through some really hot weather in uncovered parking. It keeps chugging along. I've used video from it twice already.

In my opinion, the A119 is the best bang for the buck dashcam. It's been around for years, reliable, updated, and lots of people like it. It's also pretty well priced.
Get a cam before you actually need it.
I bought mine a long time ago and its no longer available. Amazon has a bunch but it is literally a jungle of crap electronics. First pick your price range, then pick the quality of camera/lens/resolution/fps you need. Make sure it'll withstand a hot day, pick your mounting method(dash, windshield, roof) most of the other options are useless or would drain your battery if you left it on for them to work properly. I've seen some double camera front/back options recently and if I had had that option I would've considered it too.
I don't know this brand but this item is basically a slightly higher resolution version of the one I got. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRQH4R7/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza
It really depends on the dashcam model. For example, one of my family cars has this A119 V3 with the GPS mount and it slides in and out without a hitch. Can't get any easier. Also I have confidence that everytime I reinsert it, it is always facing optimally...which is harder to do with a magnetic mount without some sort of slot. Also, with a bumpy road, it never shifts or moves.
I've had that cam for 2 and a half years now with hot california sun and expect it to last many more years.
The VIOFO A119 v3 is a pretty common recommendation on the Dashcam subreddit. They also have a version that includes a rear camera you can install in your rear window. Some people also purchase the hardwire kit with it so it can be hard wired into your fuse box so it can run parking mode when your car is not on.
https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7
I'd say get an A119 V3 or a similar front only cam. The A119 is a great bang for the buck and also good quality. Garmin makes some good cams too.
https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7
That's the one I use. It's great, all kinds of video/audio settings, easy to transfer video to mac or pc, zero complaints. Even in the dark/grey/rain like today it picked everything up good, and I'm not even using the HQ video or audio settings. It excels at night footage, it's the main reason I bought it.
Maybe you or u/Genos-Cyborg can recommend a good dashcam? Looking at this A119 if it's still a good option or should I go with something else?
This is my fear is that someone does something stupid and I need video evidence. Is this A119 still a good option or should I go with the garmin that's sometimes recommended?
The A119 V3 is like the workhorse dashcam on Reddit. It's good quality and will last a long time. The A129 is the dual cam counterpart. I don't trust a lot of the other cheap shit on Amazon. Maybe Aukeys.

Just watch out for the curse..when you get a dashcam something will happen soon.
I'd say hands down the A119 V3. It's low maintenance so basically just set it and forget. It's very well reviewed on Reddit and a lot of people have them. I'd trust it over some random cheap chinese brands.
I installed A119 V3's in my parents cars and just plugged it into their cigarette lighter. They never touch it or do anything with it. I check it once a year to make sure it is working and it always is.
The Viofo A119 V3 is available right now on amazon for $92.22 w/ free shipping. I don't have one myself but it seems to be regarded on here as having some of the best image quality you can get for the money.
Yeah it's a big issue with cheap cameras. Theoretically, any cheap camera with GPS should be able to do it because it will take the date from GPS. For example, i know for sure the A119 V3 does this so I think other cams with GPS should too.
What kind of do most truckers use? I don't have a semi, but I drive a large delivery truck and I am planning on getting one myself. Is the A119 v3 still a top contender or should I look into a Garmin or something completely different?
r/dashcam
This one comes highly recommended, I’ve owned it for a few months and it has performed very well. Make sure to get a high capacity SD card too. Worth the piece of mind.
Get one! I got this one, got some nice footage of Bakersfield action saved.
Honestly, if you're ever in a car accident and it's just your word against theirs, you'll want some video evidence on your side. Unless you're at fault I guess, then forget about the dashcam and let the adjuster figure it out.
yeah that V3 is listed as having a capacitor, it's also listed on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ --- skimming a few sites it looks like all V3 units are from VIOFO and have a capacitor. Also, if you find the camera has really bad glare off the windshield, pickup a CPL filter for it. ASIN: B01N0KVD4C
Well I have the A119 V3 and can definitely recommend it. Well within your budget too.
I have a dash cam, but not because of the cops. I have one because of all the idiotic drivers in this god forsaken town.
I currently have the Viofo A119 which is a VERY good camera. You want to make sure you get one that has a capacitor instead of a battery. You dont want a battery frying in direct heat in the dead heat of summer. https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=Viofo+a119&qid=1618423220&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&smid=APVAUZZOJUWDA&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUFKVVI5MU1OMEZSRDUmZW5jcnlwdGVkSWQ9QTA3NjQ4MDAzQ1YzTEFDVjNFWURYJmVuY3J5cHRlZEFkSWQ9QTA5NTU4NTkxUUo2VFpJWUtOQzYyJndpZGdldE5hbWU9c3BfYXRmJmFjdGlvbj1jbGlja1JlZGlyZWN0JmRvTm90TG9nQ2xpY2s9dHJ1ZQ==
The Viofo A119 is only a front camera though. So if you want a dual (front/rear) camera, Get the A120 duo. https://www.amazon.com/Viofo-Dashboard-Camera-Vision-G-Sensor/dp/B07CT6JPYW/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?dchild=1&keywords=viofo+a129+duo&qid=1618423261&sr=8-1-spons&psc=1&spLa=ZW5jcnlwdGVkUXVhbGlmaWVyPUExQUdFQVY5MEVFT0kzJmVuY3J5cHRlZElkPUEwMzk3MDg3MzRVU1JMUU5VWFI3MiZlbmNyeXB0ZWRBZElkPUEwMjYzMDE0Mkg4VUYwS1BEUk81TCZ3aWRnZXROYW1lPXNwX2F0ZiZhY3Rpb249Y2xpY2tSZWRpcmVjdCZkb05vdExvZ0NsaWNrPXRydWU=
It I just picked up a Crosstour CR900 because it is cheaper than the A129 Duo and is still a dual camera. But I havent had a chance to install it. So I dont know the quality of it just yet. https://www.amazon.com/Crosstour-Magnetic-Dashboard-Recorder-Recording/dp/B08X6YXCVN/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=crosstour+cr900&qid=1618423301&sr=8-4

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRQH4R7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
i personally use this one, its able to pick up license plates pretty clearly
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_glt_fabc_DVY5ZCBV7QAG6KGTGGNP
Or the duo, or the 4k model.
I bought just a front cam (should buy a second though) - saw that this one had good reviews.
I’ve had it for a few months and it’s been fantastic, no problems!
Its listed on the bottom right of the vid. Its a VIOFO A119 V3, recording at 1440p, 60fps. Here's a list of all that was used for this video:

Just listen to the tried and true users of /r/dashcam and get this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRQH4R7/ref=ox_sc_saved_title_3?smid=AQXDPQN3LTP6G&psc=1
It's the best "budget" dashcam.
If you know how to connect a phone charger, than you can connect a dashcam, it uses the same thing.
I recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7
It has a super capacitor so it can withstand high heats and cold temps and whenever you get in a car crash or turn off your car, it safely saves the files (which most dashcams cant do if they dont have supercapacitors), it is highly rated as well for having good picture quality. Highly recommend it.
If you wanna get a bit more protected, I highly recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-Buffered-G-Sensor-Detection-Recording/dp/B07RXQJ148/
Also recommend you buy this sd card or anything that says "Endurance"
https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Endurance-microSDXC-Adapter-Monitoring/dp/B07NY23WBG
DO NOT CHEAP OUT on these micro SD Cards
It's listed on the bottom in the center (VIOFO A119 PRO)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_fab_y38GFbQEYFN5W
The model is watermarked on the bottom of the video.
Viofo A119.
Bought one each for my wife and myself. Had them about two years, zero issues whatsoever. Highly recommended. Price tag is ~$120.

> heat tolerant
Check.
> front and back cams
2 Channel (Front/Rear)
Or 2x 1 Channel (Front) (Rear)
> record to sd card with large storage automatically and only overwrite when necessary
Loop recording, 64 GB High Endurance Micro SD cards are cheap now. So are 128 GB High Endurance Micro SD cards.
> clear video with night vision
"Night vision" - Generally you do Video quality check: Day/Night/Shadow - and you look for flaws via: Google name of dash cam + Sample footage and look for the footage. Look for flaws, ect.
> wide angle
140° - 160° angle is acceptable.
165° - 170+° will cause fish eye, motion blur, distort distance and speed, and inability to read plates when not both directly in front, and completely stationary.
> sound recording
Check.
> parking mode that works with gas-powered toyota camry and will take a few frames per second constantly only if I set it to (say when parking in dangerous area) with auto save on g-force detection
So most dash cams have a few options:
Time Lapse Recording at 1fps, 2fps, 3fps, 5fps or 10fps. While parked, the camera will be always recording at the low fps but no audio is recorded.
Low Bitrate Recording at approx 4Mbps will always record when parked and audio is recorded
Motion sensor (Movement in front of camera lens)/G sensor (Hits/Bumps)
> no gps or at least ability to disable gps
Most dash cams can disable GPS.
> no wifi (ideally not even ability to connect to wifi, but at least ability to totally disable)
Most dash cams can disable WiFi/cellphone app, and WiFi altogether.
> I don't want to have to use an app to view the footage; I just want to take out the SD card and put it in my (Linux) computer to see what's on there. I also don't need a screen to watch the footage, and ideally would not have a screen on the cam.
Most people don't use WiFi/Cellphone app to view footage. Most use a Micro SD card adapter -> USB -> Computer
> I also don't need a screen to watch the footage, and ideally would not have a screen on the cam.
Screen or no screen no matter. Most screens time out after 5-30 seconds of Boot/Start up screen/not pressing buttons.
Most screens are just there for setup/install/settings/maintenance.
Every dash cam requires maintenance:
Every 30-45 days check for broken/missing files. - This detects capacitor/lipo battery failure.
Every 30-45 days check for firmware updates, and read them. - Improvements/bug fixes are common.
Every 30-45 days format Micro SD card in the dash cam.
Every time you take the Micro SD card out of the dash cam, when you put it back in format it. - Makes the card/dash cam happy.
None of these are really time consuming, but it is a chore people often ignore and/or do not know about.
When they figure out something is wrong with the dash cam, is often after an accident, and found out it did not record for this simple reason: Lack of maintenance.
> Thanks!
What I would get:
Viofo A119 v3 ($110-120 USD) + B1W ($55-57 USD) (Firmware update to fix ios playback issues) - Why A119 v3 (Front) because it is best video quality dash cam on the market. Excellent Video quality, Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode. Why B1W rear - because it is the cheapest dash cam I would recommend. Good/Fair video quality, Excellent build quality, Good parking mode - B1W parking mode: Automatic Engage/Disengage, Not Buffered, Requires hardwire kit with Low Voltage Cut off Feature (Micro USB - which most dash cams are Mini USB.) Cost structure being: 2x dash cams + 2x Micro SD cards + 2x Hardwire kits
Viofo A129 Plus Duo ($176 USD) - 2nd best video quality dash cam on the market, in a 2 Channel Front/Rear format. Excellent video quality, Excellent Build quality, Good parking mode. (Good parking mode) - A129 Plus Duo has a minor flaw in parking mode <- Read about it here. VIOFO will likely fix it soon via firmware updates. However, isn't a major flaw, just something to be aware of.
BlackVue DR590 ($240 USD) - Good/Fair video quality, Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode. 2 Channel (Front/Rear)
Thinkware FA200 ($150-180 USD w/ a bundle) - Good/Fair video quality, Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode. 2 Channel (Front/Rear) - Thinkware can be hit or miss with people, because they only do firmware updates for stability issues. Thinkware completely ignores user complaint issues. - Functional but sometimes annoying dash cams. Thinkware - You have to evaluate the minor quirks based off of the specific model.
Anyways, you need to hardwire kit -> Fuse box.
If you're going to do it yourself (and it's easy)
Front cam only - VIOFO A119 v3
Front and Rear - VIOFO A129

If you want one professionally installed, I've heard lots of good things about BlackVue and others - it's really going to come down to what the installation place wants to sell you.
I bought the Viofo A119 V3 after a lot of research and the dashcam sub rating it best $100ish price range. I love it. The amount of cool animal footage that I get is amazing.
i've had a Viofo A119 for a few years now. absolutely would recommend
Hands down the most worth it is the A119 V3. I've had mine for 3 years now and it's been through some really hot weather in uncovered parking. It keeps chugging along. I've used video from it twice already.
You just plug it into the cigarette lighter port or USB. It comes with sticky pads that you would attach the cam by your rear view mirror. Otherwise all you need is an SD card like this and you're set to go.
I've had this one for a couple years now works great, very crisp and clear.
What I would get: (Front)
A119 v3 + 128 GB High Endurance Micro SD card + VIOFO 3 Wire Hardwire kit = Cost
If (Front/Rear)
A129 Plus Duo + 128 GB High Endurance Micro SD card + VIOFO 3 Wire Hardwire kit = Cost
If Front + Rear
A119 v3 + 128 GB High Endurance Micro SD card + VIOFO 3 Wire Hardwire kit = Cost
B1W + 64 GB High Endurance Micro SD card + Power Magic Pro Hardwire kit = Cost
Total cost = $259 USD
Why did I pick each option:
A119 v3 = Best video quality dash cam Day/Night/Shadow.
A129 Plus Duo - Minor flaws with parking mode you can read about here - 2nd best video quality Day/Night/Shadow, only to the A119 v3 being top. - It takes a while for VIOFO to get Firmware correct.
A119 v3 + B1W - Best video quality front + cheapest dash cam I would recommend rear. Rear cam is more like a hope or a prayer anyways. B1W does a good job, good build quality, but is only Good/Fair video quality.
Other options:
This one is actually a solid option for your wants, but compare the sample footage of A119 v3 vs B4K. B4K is 4K video resolution. A119 v3 is 2K video resolution. Judge for yourself which is superior video quality wise. Video resolution is just a number, in a series of numbers that make up Video quality.
> I am trying to find one that will record at 4k 60fps with a high bitrate and solid low light performance.
4K does not equal video quality.
4K only means video resolution.
There is real 4K video resolution. Fake 4K video resolution.
Also 4K dash cams have a heat advisory attached to them. - They seem to generate an unusual amount of heat, and few dash cam manufacturers have done acceptable workarounds.
> I am trying to find one that will record at 4k 60fps with a high bitrate and solid low light performance.
30 FPS is the norm for dash cams.
For 60 FPS: There is real 60 FPS. There is Fake 60 FPS.
> I am trying to find one that will record at 4k 60fps with a high bitrate and solid low light performance.
Bitrate is divided by the number of frames per second. More frames less bits per frame.
> I would like a system that comes with two cameras (front + back). I am able to wire both a back and front camera to my cars electrical system so power is not a problem.
2x 1 Channel dash cam, or 1x 2 Channel dash cams.
Thus far you indicated you are interested in video quality.
Video quality:
1080p is not an indication of video quality. 1080p only means video resolution.
1080p can be: Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor, Potato video quality.
720p works good too, especially for rear cameras.
Video quality: Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor, Potato - To come to this assessment google: (Name of dashcam) + Sample video. You want to review Day/Night/Shadow, look for flaws such as: Black Sun, Reflection White out, Dark Tunnel -> Full day light Over exposure. WDR - ability to see into shadows.
A119 v3 = Excellent video quality; A119 v2 = Excellent video quality; B1W = Good Video quality; A129 2CH = Good video quality; BlackSys CH-200 2CH = Good video quality; BlackSys CH-100B 2CH = Good/Fair video quality.
To me, I like A119 v3 the most, A129 Plus duo the 2nd best, and I don't like A129 PRO Duo or Thinkware U1000.
However look for yourself.
To me what you want is:
2x A119 v3s (Front/Back)
or 1x A129 Plus Duo
or A129 Pro Duo
Neither are 4K dash cams, but the A129 PRO Duo - has a heat advisory, and A119 v3/A129 Plus Duo are considered better video quality.
A119 v3 ($93-110-120 USD) - Excellent video quality, Good build quality, Buffered parking mode. - VIOFO has surpassed the A119 v2's video quality with their A119 v3, a very impressive feat indeed. Review #1, Review #2 - Lacks WiFi/Cellphone app.
A129 Duo - is "Full HD" (Front/Rear) - which basically means 1080P video resolution. ($145 USD)
A129 Plus Duo - is 2K video resolution. ($150 USD)
A129 Pro Duo ($250 USD) - 4K with heat advisory.
I do not like the A129 Pro Duo by the way. I like A119 v3 the most.
Here you go.
https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7
I’ve had it for several years now. Still very happy with it. It’s recommended on https://dashcamtalk.com
Thanks! The dashcam is a Viofo A119 V3.
Is this the one? Right now showing $98.88. Thanks
Generally when the vehicle is parked, the dash cam enters into Parking mode to save energy, and runs off of your vehicle's battery.
11.6v = Dead battery,
11.8v -> 12.2v = Deep cycling battery = 1/2ing the life expectancy of said battery
12.4v = Normal use = Normal battery life expectancy.
Most set it between 12.0v -> 12.4v depending upon the area they are in, and how much they want to record.
There are different types of parking mode as well.
G sensor only parking mode - G sensor only (Hits/Bumps). Dash cam is off when vehicle is parked, turns on when G sensor is triggered, via LiPo battery, and records for X number of seconds then turns off. Can not buffer, and generally has a 10-15 second delay before it fully boots up and begins recording after G sensor activation. This is the worst type of parking mode. No Motion sensor.
Motion sensor + G sensor parking mode - Dash cam is on when vehicle is parked, but only writes to Micro SD card when G sensor (Hits/Bumps) or Motion Sensor (Movement in front of the camera lens) is detected. This requires hardwiring to your vehicles battery, or an External Heat Rated Battery ($200-300 USD) to power the dash cam when your vehicle is off.
There are sub groups in Motion sensor + G sensor parking mode:
Vs
Buffered - Able to record a few seconds before G sensor/Motion sensor activation (Like a time machine) and after.
Unbuffered - Records only after G sensor/Motion sensor activation is activated.
Low voltage cut off feature
(Built in + Digital) - Generally Thinkware/BlackSys dash cams
Requires hardwire kit with Low voltage cut off feature protection (Analog) - Generally everyone else.
In hardwire kits as well.
Some are Preset/Not Adjustable 11.6v Voltage only = Dead battery
Others are Preset/Not Adjustable 11.8v Voltage only
Others are Adjustable 11.8v -> 12.4v Voltage only (Analog)
Others are Adjustable 11.8v -> 12.4v Voltage + Timer based (Analog)
Others are Built in 11.8v -> 12.4v Voltage + Timer based (Digital) - These hardwire kits are just wires.
Anyways to me:
A119 v3 ($93-110-120 USD) - Excellent video quality, Fair build quality, Buffered parking mode. - VIOFO has surpassed the A119 v2's video quality with their A119 v3, a very impressive feat indeed. Review #1, Review #2
B1W ($47-55 USD) - Has wifi/cellphone app, Good video, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Not buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. - No GPS - Cheapest dash cam that I would purchase.
Are the best starter cams, then you can get into perhaps A129 Duo, or Thinkware FA200 2CH, or BlackVue DR590W 2CH, or upper ones those lines.
Everyone should have a dash cam, it only takes 1 collisions for you to make up the cost of the camera 10 fold. This is the most recommended camera if you want a single, forward facing one. There's also a dual camera version. I use the single camera version and it's saved me several times.
Viofo flash sale right now.

Floor mats - original Mazda
Cool minimalist license plate frame: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B1DMG13R
Get a dash cam. If you commute then it's only a matter of time before it saves you. Here's one of the best ones around, and only $80. There's only one with both front and rear facing cameras.
I've had people hit me and lie saying it was my fault. Every time, because of my camera, it's been declared 100% them at fault. Get one.
Two words: Dash Cam.
As a note, Linus Tech Tips did a great exposé that showed that almost all brands were using the same shitty decade-old sensor, and that only one brand used actually-decent sensors in their dash cams: Viofo. He called out the A119v3 and the A129 specifically as great entry-level dash cams that are head and shoulders above anything else in the same price range. The Amazon Black Friday sale for the A119 is over, but it should be hovering back around $108 for Boxing Day.
Agreed, but some are better than others. For example, u/ttaalliia I have this camera wired up with this hardwire kit. Works like a charm.
These?

The tl,dr from the video is they already pretty much use the same chipsets and video quality is going to similar, although some are better dialed in than others.
This is what i'm planning to use. I have it our other car.
how about this?
> All of the ones I've found seem to have half good/half terrible reviews
I think most are Ok, none are perfect. Here is a short recommendation: if you have $100, just take the plunge and purchase the VIOFO A119 V3, you really won't regret it. Here is a link to make it easy: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRQH4R7/
I feel it is a VERY high quality dashcam for a "medium" amount of money. You can find dashcams that are maybe $50 that will work, but they will look clunky and not as high of resolution as the VIOFO. If you can afford it, spend the extra $50 and get the VIOFO.
Also, check out the recommendations on r/Dashcam/ in the lower right corner, they are all very good and you can trust that reddit sub.
Longer recommendation below:
I have had dashcams permanently mounted in my cars for the past 9 years. I'm so obsessed with them, I have a "travel dashcam" that I use when I'm renting cars in other places, LOL.
Check out the recommendations on r/Dashcam/ in the lower right corner, they are all very good and you can trust that reddit sub.
For me personally: right now my travel dashcam is the VIOFO A119 that I recommended to you. It is solid and easy to use and small (so it doesn't block a lot of the windshield). When travelling, I just plug it into the cigarette lighter. The dashcams in my other cars are hard-wired by an installation shop. Personally I think you should just start by taking the plunge and plug it into your cigarette lighter, If you like it and do that for a few months, and the external plug dangling over your car's dash bothers you, take it to a shop to permanently wire it. (Or don't, there is nothing wrong with just running it off the cigarette lighter.)
If you want to see the video that will come out of the VIOFO A119 here is a recent video I pulled out of my A119 and uploaded to YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_7kSisVRelU (it is boring, ignore that, it is just to show you the quality). When you use full screen to watch it, you can see some compression artifacts, but overall it's really solid.
Other cameras: most are Ok, I have owned:
BlackVue - here is footage from 2017 when I hydroplaned and spun 360 degrees on the highway going 60 miles per hour: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkP_4oELT9w I paired the BlackVue with this backup camera built into a license plate frame: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A037VHM/
AUTO-VOX M3 Mirror Dash Cam - https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01N4OYH5E/ and I also had this "backup/rear view camera" installed with it: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B076P8QFYD/ - The mirror dashcam was because the car I put it in was very old, and didn't have a screen in it for things like viewing how you were backing up the car. The screen (built into the mirror, comes "on" when you put the car in reverse) was kind of hard to see clearly in very bright light conditions, but worked pretty well other than that. Overall I was super happy with the combination.
And the VIOFO of course.
a lot of dashcams will record motion events they can see, even after the car is turned off. for example, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ and you'll need the wiring kit to give it accessory power after the car is off https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JQ1JYPJ/
For next time: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRQH4R7/
OP, you happy with your dashcam? Is this it? https://smile.amazon.com/VIOFO-Enhanced-Vision-Starvis-Parking/dp/B07SRQH4R7
Anyone who needs a dash cam, I can recommend this one: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-Enhanced-Vision-Starvis-Parking/dp/B07SRQH4R7
But July 13th is 2 months ago, my smallish SD card only holds a week's worth of footage.
Get a dash cam. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRQH4R7/
> Viofo A129 Plus
There is only this one but no rear camera. It doesnt look like it comes with a bracket to easily move camera to other cars. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=emc_b_5_i
I have an older version of this model: https://www.amazon.ca/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7
Viofo a119 v3 for a single cam
Viofo A129 for a dual setup
Like another commenter said LTT recently did a video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AnyhHl3_tE
but mostly r/dashcam agrees that the viofo cameras are excellent, especially for the price.
Well it really doesn't matter which dashcam you use - all of them function like this. I just had an old one laying around from my old car so I attached it. It's not this model, but has the same shape: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7
And then I jerry-rigged it to mount to a flashlight holder: https://www.amazon.com/Flashlight-COSOOS-Universal-Mounting-Rotation/dp/B07H3KLMLM/
I can take a pic of the setup if you really want. It's exactly what it sounds like.

Viofo A119 v3 is what I have. Added the Amazon recommended fuse kit and installed myself in about 30 minutes. Great video quality. Don’t forget to buy a MicroSD card as well.
I'm not knowledgeable on the subject but this one seems to be liked on RFD : https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07SRQH4R7/
Dash cam: Viofo A119 https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07SRQH4R7/
Not sure if this is still recommended, I've had it on my wishlist for a long time. Anybody here know about dash cams?
Sorry, no. I just put these in both of my vehicles and they are super easy to self-install. I totally recommend for the $125 it will cost you. https://www.amazon.ca/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/
Nice, if your camera ever fails though I'd recommend one without the ball mount. I have one like this (not identical, but similar design) for my rear and it's a lot less obscuring: https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07SRQH4R7/
This is the one we have: VIOFO A119 V3 1440P 60fps Dash Cam with https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-Enhanced-Vision-Starvis-Parking/dp/B07SRQH4R7
Got rear ended a month ago or so and the other car fled, so I got this the next day: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRQH4R7
It's front only, but seems pretty good. I mounted it just to the right of the built in safety camera in the windshield so I can't really see it behind the rear view mirror, then ran the cable mostly under the trim and then under the floor mat and over to the cigarette liter.
I've had other cameras cook and blow up on me before. This one hasn't even made it through one summer or winter yet, so no comments on the durability.
Dongar adapter just got re-stocked so I ordered last Friday. Also ordered this on Amazon - Viofo A119 V3 - https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details something cheap as I need basic coverage. I had the V2 on my previous 2019 Honda Insight and it worked well. Just make sure to get a decent MicroSD card.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7?
It turns off if the cars outlet turns off. Make sure your car works that way.
I bought this an installed it about a month ago. Didn't hard wire it. Mounted it next to rearview on the drivers side. Cord is tucked in between windshield and roof panel. Crosses the A pillar at the joint between roof panel and pillar panel (the only portion where the wire is visible, approx. 3 inches). Then tucked under molding, underneath passenger dash, then up to center console. Wire is pulled taught an excess is rolled and zip tied under passenger dash so the only wires visible (right above camera across A pillar, and where it plugs in center console) don't dangle. Ive had passengers in the car not even know I had it installed until I pointe it out. Would highly recommend.

This is the one I use. Works well and already paid for itself after 3 months of using it. No rear coverage though.
Why not spring a little more and get the sub favorite Viofo A119? 4K and night starvis sensor.
It's $89 after $10 coupon right now.

I bought a VIOFO A119 V3 for less than $100 in March, and I've been very happy with it so far.
(Along with a polarizing lens and a good SD card.)
No interesting videos to post on /r/IdiotsInCars, though.
It's this one, and I also have the anti-glare lens filter linked below. I'm no expert but reviews online said it helps for night driving.

Viofo A119V3. Had it for almost a month. Sitting right behind my rear view mirror with no obstruction of EyeSight.
Here’s a pic of my placement. https://i.imgur.com/KjW0VV9.jpg
I bought the hardwire kit for the parking mode. Records in 1080P, 1440P, 4K (upscaled 1440P and requires a firmware update but it still looks great).
Currently $100 with an included GPS module— it shows speed in the video as well as the longitude and latitude but if you want parking mode, you’d have to add the kit separately (~$15). There’s also a polarized lens option to mount over the sensor, but I haven’t done that. I watched some playback yesterday and it wasn’t a big enough issue to me. Seems pretty solid. I hope it lasts at least a few years. I recommend r/dashcam for any questions.
VIOFO A119 V3 1440P 60fps Dash Cam with GPS, Enhanced Super Night Vision with HDR and Starvis Sensor, 140° Wide Angle, Smart Parking Mode 24H https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_MNHQG6HW9YG9HS8C6E7F?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Honestly, for that price I would step down to this one recommended by /r/Dashcam. Not 4k, but it does do 2k. The quality is pretty good, even at night.
We have the dual can version of this. It has an optional sentry mode. It's a solid unit that does well in extreme temperatures.

Since everyone is asking about the dashcam.
https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-2560x1440P-140-Degree-Included-Detection/dp/B07SRQH4R7
I recommend VIOFO cams, specifically the A119 V3 or the A129.
They're good quality cameras and they use a capacitor instead of a Li-ion battery to finish recording when the power goes out.
This is especially important during our summer months, as you don't want a battery getting too hot in your car and damaging the camera or possibly igniting.
Bought this. It was highly rated for not a crazy price.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SRQH4R7/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
These are pretty decent: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-2560x1440P-140-Degree-Included-Detection/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Aukey+dash+cam&qid=1644527451&sr=8-1 I’ve used an older model for the last three years, no real issues. It can overheat when setting out exposed to sun, on a hot Oklahoma summer day (very rare). Garmin mini dash cam is supposed to be pretty decent as well; I’ll probably switch to it soon. https://www.amazon.com/Garmin-140-degree-Monitor-Connected-Features/dp/B0931YZ82P/ref=sr_1_1?crid=29LCRLO744THE&keywords=garmin+dash+cam+mini+2&qid=1644527676&sprefix=Garmin+%2Caps%2C224&sr=8-1
I'd probably recommend the Viofo dashcam on Amazon or Nexar
and a hardwire kit

Get a dash cam and cover your butt. I use this one.

This is far and away the best Dashcam for heat. It has no battery so it can stand 150° F. Also 1440p 60FPS Only 100 dollars.
Amazon is having a lightning sale (12 hours left) for one of the most popular dashcams available (VIOFO A119 V3)
https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/
I've got this and haven't had a smashed window yet while street parking. I run the cable to it in the trim so it's hidden and then it pops out the top. I actually have the sticky part attached to the shaded bit near the rear-view mirror so it's somewhat obfuscated, like this.
One reason I went with the GPS unit is it's super easy to slide on/off without having to detach the mini-USB. The GPS unit which stays stuck on almost just looks like a EZ pass or some other garage scanner thing. It doesn't really look like a GPS mount. The image quality itself is decent.
I've got an older version of https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=sr_1_4?dchild=1&keywords=viofo&qid=1630626616&s=electronics&sr=1-4 I'm happy with it

As the other user said, get a CPL (circular polarizing lense). Not sure if they make one for the B1W but they make one for the A119 V3 or you can get it with a bundle.
That should help video quality a lot, especially the glare. I know Texas heat is gnarly, but I've had mine in Arizona heat for 2 years now.
As for dash cams:
Which cost structure is:
Dash cam + Micro SD card = Cost
$110 USD + $15-$24 USD = $125~134 USD (Wow micro SD cards have really dropped in price since last I checked.)
I don't know much about GoPros at all. But to record yourself, or out of the vehicle, it is likely to do better than a dash cam.
I'm in Texas (hot and humid) and I got the VIOFO A119 and have been very happy with it
Definitely. The A119 V3 with GPS combined with one of the High Endurance sd cards is a great combo. 128gb is a nice amount for the high res single cams.

Here is the one I have https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apap_5kmCtoohIQvnV
It was the best bang for your buck back in the spring of 2020, not sure if things have changed now and there is something better.
It’s the VIOFO A119 V3. I love it and it’s only like $100
It has an action button, the biggest button on the machine. It is simple, and a runner, and still considered best video quality at 2K video resolution. 4K, 2K, 1080P = video resolution, which is one number among many numbers that make up video quality.
The A119 V3 is like the workhorse dashcam on Reddit. It's good quality and will last a long time. You need to have it hardwired with this kit to unlock parking mode and motion detection. It's nice because it monitors the battery and doesn't let it drop too low.

A129 Plus Duo - Is a newer dash cam and lacks reviews. VIOFO A129 Plus Duo - BlackBoxmyCar(Dot)com has lost some of their knowledge base in reviews. So Dashcamtalk(dot)com, or other Youtubers would be superior reviews on the subject at this point.
This is what I would get, and I wouldn't consider anything else.
What you have to do is hardwire a cam that has parking mode. I'd recommend the A119 V3 and the 3-wire hard-wire kit. There are tons of youtube videos on how to do it. You need the 3-wire kit because it will monitor your battery voltage to make sure it doesn't drop too low so that you can always start your car.
> Best dashcam under $1000???
Best how?
The Tesla Sentry system: Front/Rear/Left Rear Mirror, Right Rear Mirror. - Tesla might have more cameras.
However, it is more for Tesla's Driver Assist feature (autopilot), and less for parking security or dash cam. - Tesla's Camera setup has all the cameras in the right places for parking mode. - However, the video quality of the cameras, is maximized for the Driver Assist functions, not capturing plates/faces for instance.
Best video quality?
A119 v3 ($110-120 USD) - This is one channel, and only (2K) but probably the best video quality possible in all environments (Day/Night/Shadow/Rain/Snow ect) (You could 2x A119 v3 + 2x hardwire kits (long) + 2x Micro SD card for (Front/Rear.)
A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD) - This is 2 Channel, (4K), but I would rate it below A119 v3 in video quality.
BlackVue DR900S 2CH (4K) ($430-591 USD) - Cloud feature - This is 2 Channel (4k), but I would rate it below A119 v3, and below A129 PRO Duo in video quality. This one has different options in Codecs (some save space and lower video quality, other codecs are for maximum video quality.) - This is one of the few "Cloud Feature" dash cams. Which is really cool, but I will cover it later.
Best Bells and Whistles?
BlackVue DR750S 2CH ($329-510 USD) - Cloud feature
BlackVue DR900S 2CH (4K) ($430-591 USD) - Cloud feature
So Cloud feature - Upload/Download/Streaming/Storage to the cloud. GPS Location in real time via the cloud. - It can Cellphone Text Message Notification(s) of G sensor activation(s) while in parking mode. Also Text Message notification(s) of Over speed while driving. - And lots of other features.
I am aware they are working on new versions of BlackVue DR750S/DR900S - That have a built in Mobile WiFi Hotspot which would only require a Cellphone LTE Sim card, with the attached Data plan/network.

I may have listed links in the bottom, which I did not list above, because I got tired in the middle of it.
Anyways, the best rated heat are the Street Guardian line up. Since I don't particularly like or dislike Street Guardian, I don't look at their line up, except when people ask about extreme heat conditions. They could have newer dash cams, I would just be unaware of them.
Anyways, SGGCX2PRO, and Street Guardian SG9663DC are pretty standard advice. For better advice, look them up, and their other products.
> what can i do to mitigate the heat?
Buy a Prius with the solar panel that turns the fan vents on. Seriously, it cools the car with the solar panel on the roof, but that is the only thing that solar panel does.
Dash mat - Won't reduce heat, but it will protect your dashboard, and reduce reflections. - Pick a dark color.
Car Window shade - they sell them, not sure if they work.
Car windshield Sun Shade - Not sure if they work, but people have them.
Car window tint - No idea if this works, but people have them.
That car window vent fan thing - Doesn't work but people have them.
Cracking your windows - possibly works.
Car Window rain guards - They work at keeping out the rain when you crack your windows.
> Are there any dash cams that are not pricey and are heat resistant?
Street Guardian either the SGGCX2 1CH, or SGGCX2Pro would be the most heat resistant, have the best video quality in extremely dark conditions.
A119 v2, B1W, and SGGCX2Pro are common answers.
A129 2CH, BlackSys/Thinkware/BlackVue models are as well.
Edit: Added new dashcams.

IMHO there are better places to purchase from, with better customer support. BlackBoxMyCar.com - price match and Customer service. CaptureYourAction.com is also excellent to deal with. /u/estore009 on ebay, and Amazon is also excellent to deal with.
I would also ask resellers: /u/captureyouraction, /u/blackboxmycar, /u/estore009, /u/StreetGuardianUSA, and /u/ThinkwareDashcamNA their opinions specifically. - As they are retailers/manufacturers of said dash cams, and may have different perspectives.
> Best dashcam for image quality?
or
Comparison of footage:
vs
> Is dual-channel worth it?
Price wise yes, it definitely saves time/energy on maintenance as well.
2CH = Dash cam + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (optional) = Cost
2x 1CH = 2x Dash cam + 2x Micro SD card + 1x Hardwire kit short (optional) + 1x Hardwire kit long (optional) = Cost
> My biggest priority is finding another camera with a wide FOV, and also a crisp, clear image quality.
You and I will disagree on FOV, 130-140-150-160 is fine for me.
> I have a budget of ~$250CAD pre-tax. What would you recommend that I get?
I would contact Blackboxmycar.ca - and ask them to price match amazon/ect.
or CaptureYourAction.com
Anyways:
1 Channel
B1W ($47-70 USD) - Cheap, affordable, good video quality dash cam.
A119 v2 ($79-105 USD) - 2nd best video quality dash cam on the market.
A119 v3 ($110-120 USD) - Best video quality dash cam on the market.
A129 (Front only) ($120 USD) - Cheap affordable dash cam - This version is the 1 Channel version - That can be used as a rear camera with the proper cable length, or
2 Channel (Front/Rear)
A129 Duo ($150-170 USD)
VIOFO A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD)
Comparison of footage:
Rear view cam - Get a separate device from a dash cam. What you want in a rear view/Back Up Camera is:
Auto Engage + Screen turn on when putting vehicle in reverse,
Auto Disengage + Screen turn off when not in reverse.
Reliable
Water/Weather Proof Back Up/Rear camera.
What you want in a dash cam: Definitely record the accident you were just in.
Build quality
Video quality
Parking mode
These are the 3 main functions of a dash cam, and it doesn't sound difficult until you see what is actually on the market, and how poorly it preforms.
These are very different wants, separate devices suggested.
Best value:
A119 v3 ($93-120 USD)
B1W ($47-55 USD) (Firmware update to fix ios playback issues)
Best value Dual cams:
A129 Duo ($150-170 USD)
Thinkware FA200 2CH WiFi ($130-150 USD)
BlackVue DR590W 2CH WiFi ($240-290 USD)
What I would pick:
A119 v3 ($93-120 USD)
B1W ($47-55 USD) (Firmware update to fix ios playback issues)
Cost structure being: A119 v3 + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Short) + B1W + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Long)
Cost: ($120 USD) + ($30 USD) + ($15 USD) + ($55 USD) + ($30 USD) + ($21 USD) = ($271 USD)
> I think a good parking detection would be the most important feature to him. I know he's anal about his car getting hit while it's parked, I want to get him a dash cam that records before and after - so I think this means it would need to be hardwired?
Yes. Unless you want to pay an additional ($200-300 USD) for an External Heat Rated Battery pack.
> 2) Not sure if he'd want front and rear - I'd like to hear your guys opinion on if you find it 100% necessary.
For most people, no, not 100% necessary.
For your boyfriend, most likely he would benefit from having (Front/Rear) cams.
> 3) Good quality - I'm aiming to stay above 1440p.
1440p is not an indication of video quality. It is video resolution only.
Video quality is a combination of a lot of numbers.
How to assess video quality:
> 4) What are the best dash cams out there?

B1W ($47-55 USD) (Firmware update to fix ios playback issues)
Best value Dual cams:
A129 Duo ($150-170 USD)
Thinkware FA200 2CH WiFi ($130-150 USD)
BlackVue DR590W 2CH WiFi ($240-290 USD)
> 5) How do I go about hardwiring if I need to? Should I have a professional do it? Where's the best place to get that done?
If you hardwire it to the fuse box: (Always on - parking mode) vs (Ignition only - No parking mode) - Both are about the same hardness level.
Parking mode is a definite upgrade. Both hide the wires better, and free up the Cig Lighter/Power Outlet.
This requires a bit more knowledge, but worth learning yourself.
Picking the correct hardwire kit is important as well.
Low voltage cut off feature:
11.6v = Dead battery - Sadly many hardwire kits are still 11.6v = Dead battery.
11.8v = Lowest possible setting and have vehicle start reliably.
11.8v -> 12.2v = Deep cycling the battery 1/2ing the battery life expectancy.
12.4v = Normal use = Normal battery life expectancy.
> Should I have a professional do it? Where's the best place to get that done?
No idea where to have it done, people seem to do pretty strange things when you let them under your hood. Even "Professional" places seem to take short cuts.
Along with higher end vehicles having Special/Unique/Specific sleep modes which may complicate hardwiring significantly.
It depends what you want in a dash cam:
Best value:

B1W ($47-55 USD) (Firmware update to fix ios playback issues)
Cost structure being: A119 v3 + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Short) + B1W + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Long)
Cost: ($120 USD) + ($30 USD) + ($15 USD) + ($55 USD) + ($30 USD) + ($21 USD) = ($271 USD)
> I was wondering how setting up a dashcam would work?
Hardwiring kit = parking mode - With a Low voltage cut off feature. Many kits are 11.6v = Dead battery.
No hardwire kit = Cig lighter = What ever your cig lighter/power adapter is set to (Always on vs Ignition only)
> And what dashcams are better than the other one’s?
This is dependent upon how you value:

> highest build quality
I would say: VIOFO, BlueSkySea, Street Guardian, BlackVue, and Thinkware are about equal in build quality - Rating them all Good (can last 5+ years) with a few notes.
VIOFO - Firmware updates are often, and can add new features, and sometimes new bugs. VIOFO - WiFi/Cellphone app standard buggy/annoying app to use.
VIOFO: A129 PRO Duo - Heat advisory - All 4K dash cams seem to generate a lot of excess heat, and A129 PRO Duo is no exception. There are suggested Micro SD cards, I suggest sticking to them.
BlueSkySea - They are newer than the other dash cam manufacturers on the list, but they seem stable, with a few quirks. BlueSkySea - I don't see as many complaints about their app, but I would not list it as perfect either.
BlueSkySea: B1W - Mic is on one side of the dash camera, which causes a distorted or mono audio quality to the sound. Also lacks Buffered recording - if that is important to you.
Street Guardian - Their brand largely focus on heat tolerance. They are similar in design to VIOFO, but are higher priced, and lower video quality. Street Guardian - I don't see many complaints about their app, but I also do not think they have WiFi/Cellphone app in most models.
Street Guardian: Since you are paying a premium for this dash cam, people are VERY disappointed when one of the dash cams fails.
BlackVue: Only company to setup WiFi/Cellphone app correctly. They largely focus on WiFi/Cellphone app, and Cloud feature, and not so much video quality. BlackVue Cloud feature - properly setup. They also are more expensive than other brands. When BlackVue dash cams fail people complain a lot more than normal, because they paid a premium.
BlackVue: BlackVue DR900S, and DR900X models are 4K dash cams, and have a heat advisory. BlackVue has largely solved the 4K heat problems with a firmware update, but the heat advisory remains.
Thinkware - Firmware updates for stability issues only. Owner complaint issues that could be fixed via firmware updates, are completely ignored. This creates a functional, but sometimes annoying dash cam. It also makes Thinkware Hit or Miss with people. Thinkware - WiFi/Cellphone app standard annoying/buggy app. Thinkware Cloud - Only other manufacturer to make cloud dash cams, Cloud considered annoying/buggy/clunky last I checked.
Thinkware: Thinkware F800 2CH/Thinkware F800 PRO 2CH - Chatty dash cams on start up or completely silent. Can not disable individual voice alerts, only Voice alerts on, or Voice Alerts off. 100% fixable via firmware updates, never done. Thinkware F50 1CH - G sensor too sensitive on lowest setting, can not disable. 100% fixable via firmware updates, never done.
> highest build quality with good parking mode and decent video quality?
It depends what you think decent video quality is or not.
How to assess video quality:
Video quality:

> Is there a highest build quality with good parking mode and decent video quality?
For your wants:
Dash cam + 16GB Micro SD card + Hardwire kit = ($180 USD) - Check manufacturer for recommended Micro SD card list (64 GB or 128 GB suggested) (128 GB Max Micro SD card size)
What I would also look at:
Dash cam + 16 GB Micro SD card + Hardwire kit = ($260 USD) - Check manufacturer for recommended Micro SD card list (64 GB or 128 GB suggested) (128 GB Max Micro SD card size)
Also look at:
What I would pick:
A119 v3 ($93-120 USD)
B1W ($47-55 USD) (Firmware update to fix ios playback issues)
Cost structure being: A119 v3 + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Short) + B1W + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Long)

Dash cam + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (for parking mode) = Cost
Why would I pick A119 v3? - Because it is the best video quality, and all the other dash cams are a serious step down from A119 v3. I don't care about WiFi/Cellphone app, if I did I would always pick BlackVue. I don't care about Cloud feature, but those are out of the price range you suggested anyways.
Why B1W (rear)? - Because it is cheap, it can be mounted on almost every rear window, and even though it lacks Buffered recording, Buffered recording is normally only a big deal in parking mode. One could do 2x A119 v3, but that would be more expensive, and limit the number of rear windows you can mount it on.
If I cared about WiFi/Cellphone app: BlackVue DR590W 2CH. - Definite step down in video quality from A119 v3.
VIOFO A129 Duo - Dash cam + Hardwire kit + Micro SD card = Price. This comes very close to Thinkware FA200 2CH in price, but with the final costs of hardwire kit + Micro SD card it may or may not compete well. I like VIOFO, but am I willing to pay more for it than Thinkware FA200 2CH, perhaps, perhaps not.
> rear view mirror style dash cam
I would say all rear view mirror dash cams are bad. Adds vibration, and distortion by design.
> I've searched online but only come across front/rear or inside/rear.
There are 3 channel dash cams starting to be on the market. I do not recommend any of them however.
> If that doesn't exist whats a good front/rear mirror style dash cam with wifi. About 250$ budget. Thank you.
Removing the mirror part.

What I would get is: A119 v3 (Front) + B1W (Rear)
Cost structure being: A119 v3 + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Short) + B1W + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Long)
Cost: ($120 USD) + ($30 USD) + ($15 USD) + ($55 USD) + ($30 USD) + ($21 USD) = ($271 USD)
Why: A119 v3 = Best video quality dash cam on the market, B1W = Cheapest dash cam I would buy. - Gives you best video quality front, and acceptable video quality rear.
VIOFO A119 v3 - Max Micro SD card size is 256 GB - You could/should upgrade to 64/128/256 GB depending upon intended use. B1W - Max Micro SD card size is 64 GB - 32 GB/64 GB is acceptable for this dash cam.
I used the Viofo A119 V3. But i wire it into the arm rest.
https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7
I ended up getting this one. I really like it but there are so many to choose from most any of them should be fine (and way better than nothing!)
> All the ones with "parking mode" are impact queued, I just want to leave it on all night.
Parking mode:
Generally the dash cam is on, but only writes to the Micro SD card if Motion sensor (Movement in front of camera lens), or G sensor (Hits/Bumps) are activated.
G sensor only parking mode - Dash cam is off, when G sensor (Hits/Bumps) activated dash cam will start up (5-15 seconds later) will begin recording for X number of seconds/minutes. Requires a Lithium Ion Polymer battery in the dash cam to work. - Does not require hardwiring. This is the worst type of parking mode btw.
Excellent parking mode = Automatic (Engage/Disengage when parked/driving), Buffered - able to record a few seconds before and after G sensor/Motion sensor activation (like a time machine), Low voltage cut off feature (Adjustable) Voltage/Timer based.
Lack luster parking mode = Missing one or more of the above features of Excellent Parking mode. Very commonly it is: Automatic, Not Buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature built into the Hardwire kit. B1W/A119 variants = Lackluster, Automatic, Not Buffered, Requires hardwire kit with Low voltage cut off feature.
> Ideally I'd like one that is wired so it doesn't die, but battery operated ones are fine.
Lipo batteries crack/swell/leak/other wise fail to supply the dash cam with power.

Street Guardian SGGCX2 (Includes memory card and CPL filter) ($150-290 USD) - Good video quality, Good build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Not buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. No wifi/cellphone app. - This dash cam is similar to the A119 variants in video quality. Lacks Cloud feature. - Has GPS
A129 Duo ($138-150-170 USD) - Good video quality, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. Has wifi/cellphone app. - This is a 2 Channel (Front/Rear) or (Front/interior) dashcam similar to the A119 variants. This dash cam is very popular. Lacks Cloud feature. - Has GPS
Thinkware FA200 2CH WiFi ($130-170-190 USD)
BlackVue DR590W 2CH WiFi ($206-230-260 USD)
Street Guardian SG9663DCPRO ($240-260 USD)
If you have extra money:
VIOFO A129 Pro Duo ($212-250 USD) - Excellent video quality, Fair build quality, Lackluster parking mode: Automatic, Buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature to enable parking mode. Has wifi/cellphone app. - This is a 2 Channel (Front/Rear) or (Front/interior) dashcam similar to the A119 v3 - except lower video quality. This dash cam is very popular. Lacks Cloud feature. - Has GPS - Warning Heat related problems, cause unsure: Micro SD card might be to blame? or normal 4K video resolution heat related issues?
Thinkware F800 Pro 2CH ($250-$350 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good video quality. Has wifi/cellphone app. Has Cloud feature. Has partitioned normal/Parking recording. - The 2nd of the Thinkware Cloud dash cams. - Has GPS
BlackVue DR750S 2CH ($324-510 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Good video quality. Has wifi/cellphone app. Has Cloud feature. Has partitioned normal/Parking recording. - Improved video quality over the BlackVue DR650S 2CH, added partitioned normal/parking recording. - Has GPS
Thinkware Q800PRO 2K QHD ($300-400 USD)
BlackVue DR900S 2CH (4K) ($330-430 USD) - Excellent build quality, Excellent parking mode, Excellent video quality. Has wifi/cellphone app. Has Cloud feature. Has partitioned normal/Parking recording. - Has GPS
Thinkware U1000 (4k/2k) ($400-500 USD)
> 1080P video is probably good enough
1080P is not an indication of video quality. 1080P can be Excellent, Good, Fair, Potato video quality. 1080P is video resolution only.
> around $100
Your price point is very bad for a 2 Channel (Front/Rear) dash cam, with parking mode.
> Additionally something that's not a pain in the ass to use UI wise would be nice.
Most WiFi/Cellphone apps are a pain to use. The reason is - people overestimate the value of WiFi/Cellphone app.
WiFi/Cellphone app is useful for: Install/Settings/Maintenance/Viewing recently recorded footage.
WiFi/Cellphone app is terrible for: Transferring files to your cellphone/Rear backup camera - will have lag.
Even at 5.0 GHz, transferring files to your cellphone is slow.
Even at 2.4 GHz, transferring files to your cellphone is slow.
Even the leader in WiFi/Cellphone apps - BlackVue - which is the only manufacturer which does WiFi/Cellphone app correctly, it will be slow.
My suggestion is:
A119 v3 ($93-120 USD)
B1W ($47-55 USD) (Firmware update to fix ios playback issues)
Get one of these two,
A119 v3 - best video quality dash cam on the market. At 2K video resolution it out does the 4K video resolution cams, and does not have a heat problem (like many 4K video resolution dash cams have.) - No WiFi/Cellphone app. - Just get a Micro SD -> USB Adapter and transfer files to a computer. Build quality: Excellent; Video quality: Excellent; Parking mode: Excellent - Automatic (Engage/Disengage), Buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature.
B1W - Cheapest dash cam I would recommend. Has WiFi/Cellphone app. - Standard WiFi/Cellphone app complaints. Video quality: Acceptable, Build quality Acceptable, Parking mode: acceptable. - Automatic (Engage/Disengage), Not Buffered, Requires hardwire kit with low voltage cut off feature.
You think you want a rear cam, but not at that price point. Get something that is a good dash cam, or pay more money for a good 2 channel dash cam.
Dash cam + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit = Cost.
> I have lost 2 very worthy events for r/Roadcam due to how shitty Aukey's DRA1 is.
This is why I do not like Aukey.
> I am past my return period with Amazon on this POS unfortunately
Credit card buyer assurance program - If your credit card has one.
Warranty extension program - If your credit card has one. - This one works slightly different generally there is a $2000 limit per fiscal year (total). You pay to ship to your credit card company via the program, they reimburse you the purchase price + cost of shipping. Generally you have to wait until it is out of the manufacturer warranty (what ever that is) and they will want proof of how long it is - and they will extend your warranty 1 year extra via this program.
> I can record myself running over the DRA1.
I would consider doing option 1 or 2 if possible.
> I will ensure I leave a review on Amazon as well to warn others there about this issue.
Check for firmware updates and read the change log if there is one posted.
It depends what you want in a dash cam:
Best value:
A119 v3 ($93-120 USD)
B1W ($47-55 USD) (Firmware update to fix ios playback issues)
Best value Dual cams:
A129 Duo ($150-170 USD)
Thinkware FA200 2CH WiFi ($130-150 USD)
BlackVue DR590W 2CH WiFi ($240-290 USD)
What I would pick:
A119 v3 ($93-120 USD)
B1W ($47-55 USD) (Firmware update to fix ios playback issues)
Cost structure being: A119 v3 + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Short) + B1W + Micro SD card + Hardwire kit (Long)
Cost: ($120 USD) + ($30 USD) + ($15 USD) + ($55 USD) + ($30 USD) + ($21 USD) = ($271 USD)
I'd say front only cams cover 95% of situations. Even if you get rear ended or sideswiped, they will show that either you were in your lane or not speeding, etc., so by default if you were driving properly, the other party is at fault. Rear cams are nice in case of hit and runs were they may be able to capture the front license plate or so what the driver was doing (texting/putting on make up). They are a bit more pain in the butt to install
Hardwire kits with parking mode work well. Basically they monitor your battery to make sure it never drops below a certain voltage. If it does, then it shuts off the camera. I've never had my battery die cause of the dashcam. I would go with the A119 V3 and also do the hardwire kit with it
Dash cam + Micro SD card + (optional) Hardwire kit = Cost
A119 v3 ($120 USD) + Micro SD card High Endurance ($18 USD) + (optional) VIOFO 3 Wire Hardwire kit ($15 USD) = ($153 USD)
B1W ($55 USD) + Micro SD card High Endurance ($18 USD) + (optional) Hardwire kit ($17 USD) = ($90 USD)
> So Christmas is coming and I'm confident about my planned gift.
It is unlikely that any retailer can ship it to you before Christmas at this point.
I would get the A119 v3 ($110-120 USD) but it isn't really for your purposes.
Mobius could do the job, but there was a reason it was removed from the sidebar.
What you want in a dash cam is - Set it and forget it. Auto on, auto record, audio alerts when there is a problem.
What you want in a Go Pro is - Pull it on/off, ect like an action cam.
You might try: Cyclists With Cameras Wiki - Regularly updated
As there might be cross over there with helmet cams, and action cams.
> I'd like to know what the easiest cam to install with HD front/back video is?
What is HD video quality?
HD, 1080P, lots of buzz words, means very little in terms of video quality. - Even in televisions.
What HD/1080P is revering to is video resolution, which is separate from video quality.
> *Edit - as a bonus I'd like a model that will take a few frames per minute to show the entire drive in slow-mo.
1 Channel (Front Only)
A119 v2 ($79-105 USD) - 2nd best video quality dash cam on the market.
A119 v3 ($110-120 USD) - Best video quality dash cam on the market.
2 Channel (Front/Rear)
A129 Duo ($150-170 USD)
VIOFO A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD)
Between the two:
2x A119 v3 ($110-120 USD), or
1x A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD)
I think I would pick the A129 PRO Duo ($250 USD) - for the reasons outlined below:
Cost structure:
2x A119 v3 = 2x Dash cams + 2x Micro SD cards + (2x Hardwire kit optional) = Cost
A129 PRO Duo = Dash cam + Micro SD card + (Hardwire kit optional) = Cost
Parking mode generally requires hardwiring the dash cam to the vehicle's fuse box. - It isn't very hard to do, but it is an extra step. What I would recommend is buying from Blackboxmycar.com - and getting them to price match vs Amazon or other links. - As they include an install tool which is very very nice. Also getting a larger Micro SD card High Endurance, is recommended.
A129 PRO Duo - However it is a new dash cam and lacks long term reviews. - I like VIOFO's products, but all new dash cams should be viewed with suspicion.
So if video quality was the only thing I was concerned with: 2x A119 v3s.
A119 v3 - Best video quality dash cam on the market, beats even the 4k dash cams of this generation, (Thinkware Q800Pro 2K QHD) ($400-490 USD), (BlackVue DR900S 2CH (4K)) ($480-591 USD)
Cost structure would be: 1x A129 2CH ($160-170 USD) + Micro SD card High Endurance MLC based ($35 USD) + Hardwire kits (Power Magic Pro) ($24-27 USD) = ($219-232 USD)
You could swap the Hardwire kit Power Magic Pro for a VIOFO Hardwire kit for the Front A119 v3, or the A129 2CH:
VIOFO 3 Wire kit ($15 USD) - Cable lengths make this only attractive for the for the A) A129 2CH, or B) Front hardwire kit of A119 v3. Rear unit A119 v3 would have to be a longer Power Magic Pro. Low voltage cut off feature (Adjustable) 11.8v, 12.0v, 12.2v, Deep cycle) (12.4v, Normal use) Voltage only
VIOFO 2 Wire kit ($10 USD) - Cable lengths make this only attractive for the for the A) A129 2CH, or B) Front hardwire kit of A119 v3. Rear unit A119 v3 would have to be a longer Power Magic Pro. Low voltage cut off feature (Preset/Not Adjustable) 11.8v Deep Cycle Voltage only.
Power Magic Pro ($24-27 USD) - Has longer cable lengths useful for the front/rear units. Low voltage cut off feature (Adjustable) (11.8v, 12.0v, 12.2v, Deep Cycling), (12.4v, Normal use) Voltage/Timer based.
I don't like Garmin for any reason, they are over priced, and under preform. They are simply not good dash cams, and I have yet to see one that is a good dash cam. - They do unique features, but that does not make for a good dash cam.
These are the more budget friendly ones I have run: https://www.amazon.com/VIOFO-A119-1600P-Camera-Logger/dp/B07SRQH4R7/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=Viofo+dash+camera&qid=1626726225&sr=8-3
Get picture and features. Viofo has some more expensive ones depending on what features you want, also Vue has some nice ones for around $150 that you can't go wrong with.
Having a video like this certainly helps. This is my fear is that someone does something stupid and I need video evidence. Is this A119 still a good option or should I go with the garmin that's sometimes recommended?
