Rechargeable batteries so unlike Mace you don't have to worry about it expiring..
Since so many people asked it’s this it’s a pretty powerful rechargeable flashlight I use a lot to find house or apt numbers and then the zap zap end built in for whatever you might need it for. Love the rechargeable flashlight part though and it comes with a belt holder.
Like the others said, tell everyone close to you — try to give them a description of the man, and give them the name of the neighbor that hired him so if anything happens it’s easier to track him down. Hell, maybe even ask the neighbor for the man’s name and tell your close friends/family. Go to someone else’s house if you can.
Also, I’d really recommend buying a taser and keeping it on you. I bought mine (vipertek flashlight taser) off Amazon, it’s $21. They have 2 sizes (the $21 one is the large size), but even though the small is cheaper, buy the large. It’s heavy enough to wack someone with and do damage, which is good in case you don’t notice that the battery is dead and end up in a bad situation — the small, not so much.
It’s pretty strong (my mom accidentally tased her hand briefly once, and she said it felt numb for an hour) and the noise is loud too, so it’s good for scaring people away. It also functions as an actually flashlight (the switch has 3 modes: off, flashlight, taser) so bonus if you ever find yourself in need of one.
It’s also really easy to use; you just turn the flashlight on (the on/off switch is at the bottom), push the flashlight switch all the way up (the one on the shaft), and press the button above the switch. Here’s the link:

I carry a flashlight taser in the sleeve of my jacket though, so I'm more confident than some ladies about saying no in a very direct manner. It crackles a fine warning shot sound. Zzzt!!

Get a flashlight taser. I love mine. The sound alone is enough to scare someone into going the opposite direction.
I haven’t used it on anyone though so it could be weak as hell.

Does your complex have cameras?? I’d go to management just in case! My old apartment also kept record of renters’ vehicles including make, model, color, and tag number. It’s worth a shot at just asking, maybe they can help you figure out if that’s someone that lives there or not so you have some peace of mind.

Get used to it. I’ve been asked if I want to do sexual favors, get high or so drugs, invited into clubs just so he could watch me tip the girls, one guy offered 30,000 dollars a year to be his personal driver and I’d only have to go out with him to bars every Friday and Saturday night and be his driver. I've seen this hand held stun gun recommended in local FB groups. It has the disadvantage of needing to be very close to actually use it, but the advantage that usually just test firing it into the air is often enough to stop an attacker, or scare off any aggressive dogs (supposedly). I got one, and the noise it makes is really intimidating.

It's nothing close to the real taser, tryed it on myself, only affects certain limb that's being shocked, burns too when it not touching the body part.
I'm not sure, I feel our neighborhood gets a little dark. I stay on the streets at dusk rather than trails but I do feel safer carrying this.

I have a vipertek vts-159 I got from Amazon.
In general vipertek has great ratings. Like others here have said, there are situations where just having it and pressing the button in a "back the eff off, I'm serious" defensive stance can be enough, and it's an intimidatingly loud snapping current sound (I've had to use it in that capacity before, and luckily I've never had to actually use it on someone so far).
What I also like about vipertek is that their stunguns keep their battery charge for an impressive length of time. I keep mine in my car year-round (so it's been in the cold all winter) and I bring it indoors to charge it about 3x/year. It never seems low when I recharge it either, but I just figure I'd rather make sure it's charged than be SOL at the wrong time. 4 months sitting in the cold while still holding a strong charge is pretty dang good for a rechargable battery.
I really want a flashlight taser, but they're illegal here.
