The brand and caffeine pills are still around. I used to down these in college when working late or on a long late night drive.
Oh totally. 60mg, 100mg, 200mg, nothing. I need at least 300mg along with some other stuff for it to work.
I mean, a healthy way that is. A Vivarin Caffeine pill (typically 200mg) along with 8-12oz of water, mixed with Emergen-C Vitamin powder pack (Super Orange flavor, it has 1000mg of C, D, Zinc, and loads of other goodies) with a large shot of Mi0 Energy (which is ~100mg - 150mg of caffeine and other vitamins) is what I do.
It’s tasty, not PACKED with sugar at all, daily vitamin boost, you get your hydration because it’s just water and ~300-350mg of caffeine. There’s no crash, it comes on nicely and lasts a while.
I have a high tolerance but this seems to be a nice medium / healthy alternative to any carbonated energy drinks which I am a sucker for anyway.

In my past experience with caffeine pills, I found them to be effective. Granted, this was for schoolwork that had nothing to do with the LSAT.
These are the kind Ive used in the past, and they were effective: http://www.amazon.com/Vivarin-200-mg-Tablets-40-Count/dp/B0019GCSD6
BUT, I feel like its a different kind of feeling, and it can potentially hit you all at once. You might want to check out time released caffeine capsules.
Here are a couple different kinds, though I must admit, I've never used them:
