I used to have an after market adapter ages ago. This one I think:
VIVO Adapter VESA Mount Kit, Bracket Set for Apple 21.5 inch and 27 inch iMac Late 2009 to Current Models LED Display Computer Stand-MACB https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RW9F336/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_FM2QMNHZHHQ52M9VHFDX?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1
Keep in mind you need a very sturdy arm especially if you want to use this on a 27”.
They've have a mount that attaches to the iMac stand. I'm thinking about giving it a shot. I'll have to look at a dual monitor mount that will allow for one of the arms to hold 25lbs+.
There is a VESA option, yes, but you have to BUY THE DISPLAY WITH THE VESA MOUNT at the time of purchase. Or buy the display with the stand at the time of purchase. There is no option to buy it with the stand and then decide later you want to mount it on an arm using a VESA mount. Like the current 27” iMacs- the stand is not removable. This is asinine and the fact they are still doing it is anti-consumer. What if you change your mind? What if you re-do your workstation setup?
There absolutely no reason the stand cannot be removed so that a VESA adapter can be added like in the old days. Granted, it’s absurd you need a VESA adapter in the first place, but at least I don’t have to throw away a perfectly good iMac or display just so I could mount it.
Plus it leads to stupid solutions like this:
VIVO Adapter VESA Mount Kit, Bracket Set for Apple 21.5 inch and 27 inch iMac, Late 2009 to 2020 Models, LED Display Computer, Stand-MACB https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RW9F336/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_i_DBE7GM398VXG7E23JR9V
i picked up a this vesa mount adapter from amazon and i installed it onto the stand, then just mounted it like a regular monitor,
gonna put some No Face figurines on the stand soon
You don't need to mount the iMac on the stand, but there are iMac VESA adapters that don't require removing the built-in stand, if you really wanted to mount it anyway.
Basically, just setup the stand with the displays left and right, and keep the iMac in the middle, on the desk.
I'm using adaptors that clamp onto the original iMac stand. Unfortunately newer iMacs only can only be vesa mounted when configured at the time of order.
These work pretty well though: https://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Adapter-Bracket-Computer-STAND-MACB/dp/B00RW9F336
I got the VIVO Adapter VESA Mount Kit,... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B00RW9F336?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Plus the arm
VIVO Premium Aluminum Heavy Duty... https://www.amazon.ca/dp/B07L8MLTGS?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share
Works perfect without a true vesa mount on my 27” 5K
You should have gotten a VESA-compatible iMac from Apple.
But considering you don't have it, you could use something like this to give an existing iMac VESA compatibility. It looks sketchy though.
The Retina iMacs have built-in non removable feet. There are aftermarket VESA adapters but they are just brackets that clamp onto the foot - like this: https://www.amazon.com/VIVO-Adapter-Bracket-Computer-Stand-MACB/dp/B00RW9F336
They look fairly janky.
Yup! I VESA mounted it with this:

Hi, have you tried looking at the vesa mount kit
Definitely not the typical mount. Just using this thing off amazon
You can get a VESA mount adapter for the iMac from Amazon. Then you can get a standard VESA wall mount.

Wall mount (one of many options) https://www.amazon.com/AmazonBasics-Premium-Mount-Monitor-Stand/dp/B010QZCT5W/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1531687891&sr=8-3&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=amazon+basics+monitor+arm+wall&dpPl=1&dpID=41L2NaAV4DL&ref=plSrch
The wall mount bracket needs to be mounted to the wall pretty well - to a stud or big drywall fasteners
